Avid Chelsea supporters in this house, so DH, DS and DD2 (named Ch...... you've guessed it!!!) will be happy tonight then, unless the other side have scored 4!!

MaryBS · 16/04/2011 19:11

No, it looks like you'll be a happy household. And Torres didn't score, so I'm happy too, and the way its going, we'll be a happy household because Man U are losing!

MaryBS · 17/04/2011 12:35

sermon seemed to go down well :).

MaryBS · 17/04/2011 13:12

I meant to say, found out afterwards, Torres had a goal disallowed yesterday - it was an offside decision, which DH said "could have gone either way"! (hope that wasn't my fault :o)

PositiveAttitude · 17/04/2011 13:21

Mary, I would get your posts deleted immediately, grab your passport and leave the country on the first flight you can!! You will have the whole mob of the Chelsea fans out for your blood!! Grin

nickelbaalamb · 18/04/2011 10:24

DH is a massive Chelsea fan, and he agreed when I told him about your sermon.
He is very stoic though, and said "that's just the way things go"

I recorded both our services yesterday, so at some point I will get round to making videos and putting them on YouTube, then I'll post links for you all.

We did Thorns in the Straw in the morning, which went well, but I'm sure my choir has never heard of dynamics
In the evening we did an Anthem by Desmond Ratcliffe called When Jesus Went to Calvary - it sounds like a proper funeral anthem, but quite lovely in its own way. (would not suit the happy-clappy brigade!)
DH found it in the music cupboard a couple of months ago. And it's really hard to sing - it's in 2 flats, but has about 8million accidentals in it!

nickelbaalamb · 18/04/2011 14:54

right, we did Christian Dost Thou See them? again, so

And!
brand new and exciting and nowhere else to be found!!! Grin

I need to come here and make a confession. One of my favourite songs I have discovered is a GK song. (live with head in the sands and never look at the names of the bottom of the screen). I have loved the words of "Meekness and Majesty" since reading a book by RT Kendall using the words of that song for each chapter and I found the book hugely powerful, and so the song has lots of meaning to me.

Am I now sent to Coventry, never allowed to post again on here? ridiculed, rejected?

Blush
nickelbaalamb · 18/04/2011 16:38

I love the words of meekness and majesty, but the "song" itself covers all the naughtiness of GK.
It's a shame. Grin

You're forgiven, my child Wink

MaryBS · 18/04/2011 17:24

Is he naughty? I know some women prefer "bad lads" Wink. Personally I am a fan of GK.

Not a fan of Christian dost... perhaps because it reminds me of Christian dust, which I have a lot of, in this house... if dust can be Christian...

nickelbaalamb · 18/04/2011 17:35

naughtiness of the music, rather than his naughtiness as a person.
He follows a script and is rather unimaginitive in music and in putting in "convenient" rhymes etc.

nickelbaalamb · 18/04/2011 17:37

Did you see the video though?
I love that hymn - it's amazing.
It covers everything that Christians believe and have to go through to worship - It reminds me of being a child and being picked on for going to church - and the hymn says "actually, you know what? tease me all the bloody hel you like, but I'm a christian, and I'm not going to be persuaded by you"

MaryBS · 19/04/2011 09:58

Sorry Nickel, it really isn't my sort of thing. I like inspiring words, and I agree that GK can be insipid, but if the music doesn't "grab" me, I switch off.

How about ?

nickelbaalamb · 19/04/2011 10:25

fair enough - each to his own!
I say the same about happy clappy/euphoric music, so...
Grin

sorry, i didn't like Every God. :(

I hope this doesn't turn into a competition - who can find a piece of music that everyone agrees they like? Grin It hasn't happened yet on these threads, I don't think it will.... Wink

nickelbaalamb · 19/04/2011 10:26

*Everyday God, even. oops Blush

MaryBS · 19/04/2011 11:30

Whereas Victorian sentimental dirges make me vomit! :o

Perhaps we can all agree on what we DISlike instead?

Meanwhile, here are a couple of verses spoofed on a well-known hymn (which I dislike), first verse written by a friend, and I contributed the other:

Let all mortal flesh keep talking
With our chat and gossip bland,
We don't care for heavenly-minded,
Pious prigs we just can't stand.
We'll drag out the Peace for hours
Till we've shaken every hand.

Rank, so rank, the choir, not heaven
spreads its misery on the way
As the incense clouds descendeth
from the thurible in its sway
Pray the pungent smell may vanish
as the thick smog clears away

:o

nickelbaalamb · 19/04/2011 12:00
Grin fab words. unfortunately, it happens to be one of my favourite hymns, and whenever we do it for our communion anthem, we get the best comments on it! Grin (we usually do our anthems unaccompanied)
DutchOma · 19/04/2011 13:37

I love that hymn too...in its original form, sorry Mary

nickelbaalamb · 19/04/2011 15:00
Grin

Just wait for the rest of them to come in - there could be a full-scale riot as we argue about which hymns are fab and which are dreadful! Grin

Isn't that the beauty of music, though? that it's so diverse, and that God has given so many people different talents, so that everyone is catered for!

MaryBS · 19/04/2011 20:47

I think everyone else is frightened away! Did I mention I have a GK CD?

I came a cropper with a hymn for Compline last night/tonight! No-one knew the tune I did, which I thought was a well known Advent hymn! No organist for either night, so no-one to check with...

This was the hymn:

Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That you, with steadfast love, would keep
Your watch around us while we sleep.

From evil dreams defend our sight,
From fears and terrors of the night;
Tread underfoot our deadly foe
That we no sinful thought may know.

O Father, that we ask be done
Through Jesus Christ, your only Son;
And Holy Spirit, by whose breath
Our souls are raised to life from death.

(personally I love the tune, so haunting, particularly for Compline)

Hello all! Been a busy few days....

I'm just watching "Does Christianity have a Future?" which I Sky+ed from the other evening. Did anyone else see it? Only about 10 mins in and I'm not sure that it's been put together that well and Ann Widdecombe presenting Hmm

As for musical taste, I like most things. I used to love GK in the late 80s but I find now they have just been over used and I agree with whoever said that his writing seems a little bit lazy. I find the more happy clappy and charismatic stuff does bring something to my relationship with God but I also love some of the older hymns. It's often about the words for me.

Hence, I love "Let all Mortal Flesh" and also really looking forward to The Litany of Saints at our Easter Vigil. However I also get a lot from more modern songs such as "Worthy is the Lamb" here
I could list a load more but those are just the ones that come immediately to mind.

Mary - I've not come across either that hymn or the tune before. I agree the tune is wonderfully haunting.
Also loved your sermon theme being supported by Torres not scoring! (Should I mention that I'm a lifelong Spurs fan?!)

Nickel - I agree! God is amazing in the different tastes and talents he has given us and it is great that we have this variety of music to discuss and offer opinions on!

Right, it's taken me about half an hour to write this post so I'd best get on!
