Mary - how did people not know that ?

although, our men sing it at he end of the advent Carol service.
I thought it was well-known, though. It's even in the Hideous Book!
Shock

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 09:56

(although the words are slightly different in ours:

Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world we pray,
that with thy wonted favor thou
wouldst be our guard and keeper now.

From all ill dreams defend our eyes,
from nightly fears and fantasies;
tread under foot our ghostly foe,
that no pollution we may know.

O Father, that we ask be done,
through Jesus Christ thine only Son:
who, with the Holy Ghost and thee,
doth live and reign eternally. )

MaryBS · 20/04/2011 09:57

Exactly nickel, thats just what I thought! I thought it would be as well known as something like O Come O Come Emmanuel! But I was the only one!

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 09:59

That programme by Ann Widdecombe was a bit odd - she basically ended up saying that traditional worship was dead (unless you're Eastern European), and that the pentecostal type of worship in big halls with euphoric music and shouting preachers was the way to go.

That church they featured seemed a bit pop-concert to me - didn't look like church.
I know our church is too intimate (too few congrgants!) but I don't think that huge halls full of thousands (2000 they said it could hold!) is the way to go. You need a sense of community if you're going to spend half of every Sunday there!

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 10:05

Mary - maybe it's gone out of vogue - 20 years ago, everyone would have known it.

It's beautiful for Evensong, too.

DutchOma - that was hilarious! Grin

MaryBS · 20/04/2011 10:37

Most of my congregation were pensioners though...

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 10:46
Confused

how odd.

they obviously weren't paying attention!

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 12:45

anyway,

it's As Jesus Went to Calvary - it sounds weird the first time yo uhear it, but the more you listen, it grows on you!

DH found it in the music cupboard - reckons it can't have been performed for at least 20 years! (he knew it, but noone else did)(yes, DH has been in the choir forever - 42 years!)
anyway, it sounded perfect for Jesus' passion, so see what you think.
:)

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 12:46

did anyone watch our version of When I sruvey?

DandyDan · 20/04/2011 16:01

I like the version of the Compline hymn that Nickel posted, more than the slightly more modern version. This version is the tune we know

Also love Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, as a communion hymn

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 16:23

yeah, that's the tune we do, too.
I must admit, i didn't even clikc on Mary's link to listen to the tune, but i'll have to now - I jsut assumed it was the same tune! ShockBlush

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 16:24

next time we do LAMF as communion anthem, I'll record and post it (I'm trying to record all of our music now, as a record etc)

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 16:25

ooh, Mary, that is a nice tune.

Maybe your congregation would have known the tune Dandy and I know?

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 16:27

me again!

has anyone had a chance to listen to my As Jesus went to Calvary yet?
dying to hear what you think (or dreading??)

MaryBS · 20/04/2011 16:52

Not listened to them yet, no nickel... I will do though.

Yes Dandy, that is the tune the congregation knows, and ATTEMPTED to sing on Monday (but not enough people knew it, and no-one knew it well enough to sing it)

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 17:18

then I am Shock because I would have expected them to know it.

One thing that we talk about doing is, if we introduce a new tune, to have the organist play it at random before services for a couple of weeks, then by the time we have to sing it, the congregation sort of goes "oh, i know this one, i think"
We don't know if it'll work yet, but it's always worth a try.

MaryBS · 20/04/2011 18:05

The problem was that a) it was compline and we don't normally have compline and b) I was surprised it wasn't a more well-known tune - so didn't know they didn't know it! Having said that, of the 2, I thought the second night worked better because although the tune was unknown, it was simpler, and because I knew it so well, I was able to carry the tune and have people join in (although I sang it a few times before the service to help people).

nickelbaalamb · 21/04/2011 11:32

You do get that a lot, though - you want to be in my church!
If it isn't a proper traditional old hymn (or tune to hymn), everyone moans.
Note, these people who moan do nothing to help in the Music dept. they just like to moan! Grin

MadHairyMilkEggonEasterDay · 21/04/2011 11:45

Hello all! Back from a fantastic holiday, pics on FB, stunning place. Milan itself was so crowded but the countryside and lakes were awesome :) health held up just about!

Will take some time through all the links above - I have a soft spot for 'Let all Mortal Flesh' too. Would agree about the breadth of worship reflecting the breadth of human experience and how we all appreciate different stuff. Don't agree with Widdecombe re the way to go, surely the way to go is again in all different directions reflecting how we are all different? I love more contemporary stuff and love some older stuff too - why can't we have a mixture/different types etc..nickel we may not be into the same stuff but we do agree on this for definite.

Thought one we all agreed on was Thorns in the Straw? What about Be Thou My Vision? :)

Nice to be back.

nickelbaalamb · 21/04/2011 12:34

ooh, just saw them!
going to have a peak.... Grin

Thorns i nthe straw, we reluctantly agreed on.
Video for that coming soon....

And Be Thou My Vision, we had discussions about which version was the correct one (Be at the beginnign of each line or not) Grin
But I think we did all like that hymn (in the correct format for ourselves)

nickelbaalamb · 21/04/2011 12:36

fabby pictures!
You and your DH look like proper catalogue models with your wistful poses! Grin

MaryBS · 21/04/2011 13:12

No, don't like it, but only because Lord of all Hopefulness has been done to death, more so even than Shine Jesus Shine!

Traditional, I love Hail Redeemer King Divine.

nickelbaalamb · 21/04/2011 15:20

funny, that, because I hate Lord of all Hopefulness, but quite like Be Thou my Vision. (i wouldn't choose it if I was given free reign, I must admit....)

hmm, just googled that one, Mary - didn't think I knew it, but it does stir up memories in the back of my head.

thejaffacakesareonme · 21/04/2011 16:29

I really like Be Thou My Vision. It is one of my favourite hymns. I've been following the thread and haven't recognised most of the other old hymns that have been listed. I guess we just sing different old hymns instead. Another old one I love is Abide With Me, it just all seems so personal, if that makes sense. I also love a traditional version, if possible a cappella, of Amazing Grace. I much prefer it sung simply to some of the jazzy versions that have been done. In fact, thinking about it, all three of the hymns that I've listed are very personal ones. I also like All Things Bright and Beautiful, although I imagine most people probably don't, because the line about the purple headed mountain always reminds me of where I grew up.

I liked that one As Jesus Went to Calvary, Nickel. You were right, it did grow on me.

nickelbaalamb · 21/04/2011 16:54

jaffa - most of the hymns if you don't know them will be on cyberhymnal or smallchurch music

it gives you an idea.
:)

aw, I'm glad you liked it! Grin
the first few times I was Hmm but I love it now.
