Really moved by reaction of faithful to the Pope.

Realise that there is a huge amount of negativity and vitriol on here atm with regards to the Pope's visit. However mumsnet is for all and there are plenty of Catholics who are pleased to see him here. This is a thread to celebrate this. I was really moved at the reaction of people in Glasgow yesterday. It was so emotional to see the babies hepd up for his blessing, he really did radiate a serene presence. Love his message as well, it is time to be proud to be a Christian. Hope all those going to see him have a fantastic time.

HG; listen, I actually don't mind you, I don't find you particularly funny or interesting, but I don't mind you. but what you're doing on this thread is bonkers. Why are you doing it? It can't be attention seeking because there's only 6 people on it....I don't understand? If you have a problem with the pope, or Catholics in general, start your own thread. This was a lovely thread started in the religious section. have you not got an iota of respect for other posters religious beliefs?

Hullygully · 17/09/2010 13:26

Er...........no.

Peace be upon you.

daftpunk · 17/09/2010 14:16

Fair enough.

Take care.

blinks · 17/09/2010 14:29

to be fair though, if you started a thread on nazi-ism saying wasn't it nice seeing adolf on the telly, he's got such presence, worra lovey tache etc, wouldn't you expect someone to pope into the thread (see what i did?) with a bit of vitriol? to you, he's god's mouthpiece, but to many others, he's the head of an organisation that- allowed countless children to be raped, many of whom took their own lives as a consequence, hinders the prevention of unwanted pregnancy and HIV and also had ties to the NAZI youth movement.

if it's nodding dogs you want, i suggest another website.

daftpunk · 17/09/2010 14:48

Ha ha ha.....if it's nodding dogs I want? Are you joking....I'm used to dealing with angry pitbulls on here. I'm catholic, but I haven't got a problem with all the catholic bashing threads on MN, and that's my point. There are loads of anti pope threads on here today, why did she have to post on this one? It's not as if she's said anything constructive, she's just talking a load of bollox.
She's admitted she doesn't respect any religion, so why look in the religious section? I have views on homosexuality, but i wouldn't dream of going over there and crashing in on them ( I have that topic hidden anyway)

And how can you compare the pope to hitler?

Peter tatchell, the much loved gay rights campaigner, is fighting for a change in the law so that 14 year olds can have homosexual sex....at 14 you are still a child for gods sake.

blinks · 17/09/2010 15:04

HG has every right to 'crash' this thread (surely on MN all threads are for all people?) and post whatever she wants. if it offends you, report her posts.

it's a contentious subject so you have to expect opinion to vary strongly.

i happen to agree that 14 is too young for boys or girls to have sex. it doesn't affect my dislike for anti-homosexual opinion though.

mamatomany · 17/09/2010 15:14

I am Catholic and sober as a Pope, but even I think the man has a fecking cheek if I'm honest in light of recent contraveries you'd think they'd be keeping a low profile or hanging their heads in shame

Dione · 17/09/2010 15:18

I am celebrating the significance of the Pope meeting the Queen and heirarchy of the Church of England. Good times. Grin

blinks · 17/09/2010 15:30

and DF, religion is a point of view, a belief system... homosexuality is how you're born. not the same at all.

blinks · 17/09/2010 15:30

should say DP, sorry daftpunk

Hullygully · 17/09/2010 15:31

Good luck with that, Blinks.

Dione · 17/09/2010 15:38

Daftpunk, it happens, but the key thing here is that ecumenical relations have taken a historic step this week. People are entitled to protest the pope if they wish and moan about this visit endlessly. We should not let it detract from the good work that has been done and the happiness brought by this visit.

daftpunk · 17/09/2010 15:53

I just think it's a bit ironic that Peter Tatchell is making so much noise about child sex abuse, yet wants to make it legal to have sex with children. ?

daftpunk · 17/09/2010 15:57

Blinks; Hully doesn't offend me and I would never report her posts. She is more than entitled to her opinions, all I was asking was for this one thread to be left alone. I don't think that was asking for much.

blinks · 17/09/2010 16:07

i know where you're coming from but to quote Outrage's lobby-

'OutRage! is proposing an element of flexibility in the age of consent: "sex involving young people under l4 should not be prosecuted, providing both partners consent and there is no more than three years difference in their ages". A mutually agreed relationship between a l2 year old and a 15 year old, for example, would not result in legal action. Flexibility in the age of consent already exists, to varying degrees, in German, Swiss and Israeli law.'

i suppose what he's saying is that as a third of adolescents (and they are lobbying for gay and straights by the way) become sexually active before 16, that it shouldn't necessarily be criminal for a 15 year old with a 16 year old who both give consent. alot of other countries have lowered the age of consent to 14 or have an element of flexibility, depending on the individual circumstances... i would be in favour of that (the flexibility). i believe germany have a similar set up.

daftpunk · 17/09/2010 16:47

There's quite a big difference between a 14 yr old and a 17 yr old in terms of maturity. And how 'flexible' would this new law be? You could have a man who's 1 day off his 18 th birthday having sex with someone who has just turned 14. It's crazy, and I hope all parents oppose it. Not that I ever think it will happen here.

bamboostalks · 17/09/2010 18:34

1 in 10 children are educated in Cathoolic schools in this country and it was great to see all those children represented down in Twickenham. It was a lovely occasion and there was real joy there. Touching to see so many cultures brought together in faith. Also so impressed by Dr Rowan Williams as usual, he is a great man and a fantastic leader, very spiritual.

I will confess to shedding a tear at seeing the Pope on TV yesterday... I wanted to go and see him in London so badly but with a week to go DH won't let me Sad

I wanted DS to be one of those babies I shoved in the Pope's direction who got a blessing, shallow but true!

daftpunk · 17/09/2010 18:48

I cried watching the news just now. The baby in twickeham, and how overwhelmed people are who are lucky enough to meet him. I know His visit has made me a stronger catholic.

StrictlyTory · 17/09/2010 18:56

DH has promised me a trip to the VC to see him next year... but that is not the same as seeing him here :(

Even DH the fervent agnostic has said he feels sorry for all the horrible things people are saying. He said he couldn't believe how ignorant people are in trying to make him out to be evil and a Nazi Sad So one good thing has personally come out of this visit for me Grin

ZephirineDrouhin · 17/09/2010 18:57

I must say I'm a little disappointed not to have seen more of those tee-shirts that say "I like the pope, the pope smokes dope". Were they just a John Paul II thing?

Exogenesis · 17/09/2010 18:57

DaftPunk... I'm an ex simm and was desparate to go and see the pope today Unfortunatly DD has the worst tummy bug.

I havn't seen the news today but, I watched yeasterday. I was amazed. I didn't think it would effect me the way it did but, I was overcome with emotion. I'm off for a special mass in the morning and i'm really really looking forward to it.

daftpunk · 17/09/2010 19:13

ST: I know, people can be extremely ignorant. I have time for people who want a proper discussion or want to raise valid concerns ( no religion is perfect.) but people who want to attack for attacks sake are nothing but an annoyance. ' the pope was in the hitler youth' ..... er, that's because he lived in Germany at the time and it was required by law. Really painful sometimes, dealing with the ignorance.

You know I've always wanted to go to the Vatican. I hope you go, it will be amazing.

bamboostalks · 17/09/2010 19:14

Strictly Tory, I have baby envy too. Had some fantasy about having baby early and then going down and seeing baby blessed by Pope!
