Sick of these XL bully owners

I’m just so tired not of these dogs, but the people that are attracted to them and how they behave.

My local area of Liverpool has loads of these dogs and most recently a lady got mauled to death by 5 of them that were kept in a house together. Literally round the corner.

Why aren't measures taken to prevent the unsavoury breeding and sale of these dogs, which clearly have no regard for the welfare of the animals or the safety of people? It is obvious that the average person is completely unable to guarantee that their dog won't harm members of the public.

Examples:

Neighbour who keeps two XL bullies in their apartment and has a one-year-old child. However, it's okay because they are only permitted in the kitchen. Dogs undoubtedly enjoy it, I’m sure. Don’t know what the father is thinking leaving his girlfriend and baby at home alone with two of those dogs, they’re absolutely huge.

A tiny woman who lives across the street has now made the decision to purchase one. He "stays by her side" as she very proudly walks him without a lead. The dog has jumped on me; he's still only a puppy but is already very strong. She appears to enjoy the attention the dog attracts and is proud of herself for walking the dog outside without a leash. My child was knocked over by the dog after it jumped on her. Once more, the woman believes it's all in good fun. There is no way the dog, who is only a few months old, will be able to be handled by her.

Another family on our street has two dogs, but neither of them can walk or breathe normally without stumbling. Both of the "hard" guys—father and son, I think—are exerting real effort and are literally being dragged by these dogs.

It is ridiculous. Moreover, I dread them.

They appear to believe that by frightening off onlookers, these dogs will offer them protection. The number of fatalities these dogs have produced and the fact that the same moron keeps purchasing them. I don't understand the hype because they aren't inexpensive either.

The owners love to have them off lead and then claim that "they are harmless," so i'm not being ridiculous.

Please tell me it’s not just be sick to death of this?

I think having a law that all dogs on pavements should be on the lead would also help. I can’t see why this is difficult for some owners.

The issue is: who will enforce it?

I believe that owners of dangerous breeds should be required to have a licence. Local councils should also impose harsh fines on breeders who aren’t recognised by an authority, just like they do for littering, fly-tipping, etc.

I completely agree OP. It’s utter madness.

Sixsmith · 11/10/2022 11:08

I saw one of these dogs for the first time the other day. I genuinely didn't know what kind of creature it was. Is it a dog? Is it a gorilla? Is it one of them things from the movie Ghostbusters? I actually crossed the street and asked what the hell is that?!

Horrible dangerous looking things

k1233 · 11/10/2022 11:20

@RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime that video is a 101 on how to get mauled by any breed of dog. The poor dog was trying to get away and the kid just kept hanging off it. Absolute idiots to allow children to do that, but it's the dog that gets blamed when it snaps. Regardless of breed that's never ok.

Hhgt · 11/10/2022 11:54

Yes I do agree with who would police dogs on leads on pavements. But if was made illegal at least it would be a start. People would be able to say I think you should have that dog Ona. Lead as it is illegal not to. Which is a better starting point than “cos I don’t believe you have full control of it and it’s massive” as that just creates an argument

Soakitup37 · 11/10/2022 11:54

Yanbu- the clues In the breed name. I have a fear of dogs because of an untrained rottie we had in the family as a child.

these attacks are only going to get more frequent. All dogs have an ability to attack. We need stronger laws on the ownership of them, even just to deter people from being so flippant when it comes to owning (especially dangerous) dogs

Suzi888 · 11/10/2022 12:01

YANBU but these dogs are not protection dogs.

You won’t commonly see them being raised/trained as a protection /family dog. You’ll see Dobermans, GSD and Presa Canario.

XL bullies are just ridiculous. They take an enormous amount of training and it’s constant. They need to be licensed and then phased out, stop breeding them. We created them and it needs to end. There are too many dogs full stop.

Downdaysoon · 11/10/2022 12:02

YANBU. Unsurprisingly, the owners are always a certain type.

Suzi888 · 11/10/2022 12:03

Oh and Rottweilers. Protections dogs are picked out of litters as puppies and trained for months/ perhaps years. Some probably fail. There’s no way Joe Bloggs is capable of training a dog. They sell for tens of thousands.

StClare101 · 11/10/2022 12:11

If I saw one of those dogs I’d jump a fence to get out of the way (after throwing my kids over). They are terrifying. not least because their owners are so stupid. They should be banned.

LynneBenfield · 11/10/2022 12:55

Thank you for sharing the petition. These dogs, along with various other large, aggressive breeds that have become popular in recent years like the American Bulldog and the Asian fighting/guarding dogs like Akitas need some control.

stupidannoyingtaxthing · 11/10/2022 13:13

Signed the petition but it’s disappointingly low numbers at the moment.

purpleboy · 11/10/2022 13:15

I was thinking about this whilst walking my dog this morning, I honestly don't understand why this breed isn't made illegal. No one needs to have a killing machine and usually they are in the hands of knobbers that have zero control over them. We wouldn't have a tiger wandering around on a lead so why is this viewed as acceptable? The fact that adults have died from these dogs tells you how unsuitable they should be for a civilised society. I would absolutely hate to come across one on our walk, thankfully I haven't seem one in the flesh so far, long may that continue.

Apparently there's one near where I am, never seen it though.

It's kept in a flat and rarely exercised (under year old) and kept with young children.

Owners round here feel sympathy for the dog (I do too) but it seems I'm the only one concerned about the young children. Under exercised adolescent bully breed around children is a scary thing.

FlorettaB · 11/10/2022 13:24

I’m sorry for the dogs. Their appearance attracts arsehole owners. Large, powerful dogs kept in small flats or houses or worse contained to a room like you neighbour’s dogs are. Inadequate exercise, poor or no training and no mental stimulation. They’re going to be passed around as they get ‘too much’ for their owners and they’ll end up seriously hurting someone and be put down or suffer being used as fighting dogs.

I signed too.

YANBU. This is why this culture of dogs everywhere has to stop.

There’s a nice shopping centre called Silverburn which is located in a fairly rough area of Glasgow. They’ve announced a trial dog-friendly policy where dogs are allowed in the centre and can visit a number of shops including Krispy Kreme,H&M, Waterstones and many others.

As someone pointed out in the social media comments, due to the area Silverburn is in, there’s a High chance of some ‘tough guys’ ,coming in with their quite fierce dogs.

Aside from the issue of dog mess, and people being allergic or dog-phobic it’s generally a really bad and potentially risky idea irrespective of where the shopping centre is.

Nice shopping centre in a rough area. Are you one of the Newton Mearns luvvies it was built for, totally disregarding the wants of the people of "rough" Pollok who were happy with the shops in the previous Pollok Centre.

I don't agree with dogs in shops or shopping centres either, but your class prejudice is disgusting. Don't like Pollok, find another shopping centre then.

The XL bully that killed Jack Lees was passed around- Sold on Farcebook.
Impulse purchase.
that child killer has been used for breeding- So it’s genes are out there.
Horrible, unstable dogs.

I concur. Unfortunately, I'd be too scared to approach these owners and would try to avoid these dogs. They're all absolute cretins.

I've heard more than enough stories about people getting them for a low price on gumtree or whatever and it killing them.

Stupid c, I'm glad it wasn't just me who was enraged by the abundance of these creatures.

my neighbour, the tiny petite lady lives alone with her vulnerable autistic son who has to ride a special bus to school. Just an example of the folk that buy XL bully’s with clearly not enough sense.

If they weren’t so under resourced I think social services should intervene where families with young children adopt such dogs.

they would act where kids are in a house with an aggressive male, for example. This is no different.

its understandable, last thing decent folks need on a day out is seeing one of these lowlifes coming around in their tracksuits touching their privates in public, spliffs in hand and dogs with metal chains and spikes etc sneering at you.

Agree with this, safeguarding is based on stopping something before it happens, why aren't we protecting these poor children from their irresponsible parents? But also agree SS are far too understaffed to cope with this on top.
I would think though there is a correlation between the houses SS often visit and the houses that own these dogs.

I bumped into a bloke on Saturday with a presa canario crossed with an xl , it was 10 weeks old and he was taking it out to socialise it , which involved letting it jump all over my dog . He said he had a 2 year old boy so wanted the dog to be soft so they could grow up together . God give me strength
