If you want nice things you have to pay for it! Money has to come from somewhere!

Labour so far has followed McFadden’s line

‘Every meeting I have is “who can we tax in order to pay benefits to others”. They’re asking the wrong questions.’

If we want funding we can’t rely on this approach. He was right, it’s the wrong question.

Burnham may be slightly better than Starmer, we’ll see.

BIossomtoes · 19/08/2026 08:44

Would you like me to lie? I haven’t seen any tax rises that affect me personally.

Edited

Really?
My hairdresser has seen her NI liability go up 15%, so now she can only afford to take on one apprentice and has had to put up her prices.
That affects me.

So, the usual pile on, in defence of this Labour government. If they are not being remunerated by Labour HQ, they should seriously consider tapping them up.

It’s what they do, all day, every day - 24/7.

Unbelievable, really.

What current exposure do you have to the UK employment market please - real world, real exposure?

Perhaps you should declare your own position / exposure before demanding others'. I'm sure you are knowledgeable but we can't just assume that.

You've already made us aware you keep tax money safely hoarded from the public purse by way of creative accounting so you don't have to tell us that bit by the way.

What’s that got to do with understanding the complexity of the job market? Your irrelevant, personal questions are very tiresome.

The lower the number of people working, the higher support for Labour, it might feel good to see but it’s not particularly sustainable.

We do actually need people in jobs, not just state funding and ever higher taxes.

We know. We agree. So does the government.

Can you back up your claim?

Creative accounting - do you know what that means? In a previous life, I have audited firms who have done that.

Versus tax mitigation - which is legal and legitimate.

How many of you on here have started a business, run a business, sold a business?

Thought not - no clue whatsoever.

That isn’t a requirement to understand the complexity of the employment market. Any intelligent person who takes an interest in politics and economics will be just as well informed and more objective than a small business owner.

Yes. Do people actually want tax rises? Maybe some still do. If it’s on others.

You genuinely made me LOL with that one.

Right, taking a short break from my own thread - for my own sanity!

PS. Take a holiday Blossom - get away for a bit - it will do you the world of good!

TTFN.

And still you avoid the question! What is your experience?

Obviously I know there are both legal and illegal ways of tax avoidance. "Creative accounting" is not a formal legal term for either of those, is it. Both are morally dubious.

Burnham should go with this, and see what people think of more taxes.

Would people be happy with a petition that said no more tax rises and we confirm that we don’t care if education and health and elderly and disabled are left out to die and our soldiers laid off and our roads and infrastructure collapses ?

Disingenuous.

Spend the money they currently have better.

You do understand NAV’s etc too, right?

Sentiment, retail and business confidence?

So it looks like your refusal to answer indicates that your income has not gone down ?

The Tories must be desperate if they have to resort to petitions.
