@idonothatedogs yes I agree. I think they would be very effective! There could be a series aimed at dog owners and the public on how to handle dogs safely etc

@Mansbestfriend2023 absolutely- and we could all enjoy our beautiful country safely and in harmony

I’d sign that petition. 100%

Stop being so reactionary. If animals are aggressive it's usually down to the human responsible for them. Put humans on leads!

Cinnamongirlinthesand · 15/01/2023 20:06

No from me too.My dogs have excellent recall, please don't group all dog owners together.

Talapia · 15/01/2023 20:07

No, dogs need the opportunity to run free.

Sadly, some owners shouldn't have dogs, those owners would still let their dogs run wild even if there was a law for dogs to be in leads.

Sensible owners and dogs should not be penalised because of the few poor owners.

GuyFawkesDay · 15/01/2023 20:08

No, no and thrice no.

How on earth can half the working dogs do their job on a lead 🙄 and no, they're not all guide dogs. Working farm and gun dogs etc. All need to work, off lead

Humans are the problem here.

larchforest · 15/01/2023 20:08

The problem isn't dogs being on or off the lead, or the owners, or lack of training. The problem is that some dogs are physically large and strong enough to have the potential to kill humans.

What people do in their own homes is their concern, but perhaps muzzles on larger breeds when out in public might be a better answer. At least that would help save lives.

Floralnomad · 15/01/2023 20:08

Ridiculous , and won’t stop many of the dog attacks anyway because a) they happen in the home and b) the majority of dog attacks are dogs owned by bad owners who will ignore the law anyway . It it will do is penalise responsible owners like myself who have well behaved , pleasant dogs .

Muzzled dogs would be another good solution and there was a thread about this recently.

It’s not just attacks, dogs are a nuisance in public. We are are also having a real problem with dog fouling destroying ecosystems. If dogs were kept on lead then they would urinate and shit in a smaller area. This would help to save important ecosystems such as wildflowers. There’s a huge study on it at the moment.

They may urinate and shit in a smaller area but the people who don’t pick up still won’t pick up.

my dog is a bit of bugger off lead so isn’t off lead in public just in private fields etc he’s on lead otherwise the people who are sensible and train their dogs, keep them on lead still will and the ones who don’t now won’t, if they don’t care now they won’t care even if a petition goes through.

StressedToTheMaxxx · 15/01/2023 20:25

I would sign if it went hand in hand to creating dedicated enclosed dog parks for them to run around in. They do need to run around and burn off energy.

Mansbestfriend2023 · 15/01/2023 20:43

@serenghetti2011 we actually have those large enclosed dog runs in all the parks near me. Unfortunately dogs still running around everywhere else too. I was chatting with a man at the swings and he said a dog had bared it’s teeth at his toddler yesterday. Apparently the owner thought it was funny. Very scary

Mansbestfriend2023 · 15/01/2023 20:47

@GuyFawkesDay oh yeah of course working dogs are an exception. I do think that ‘working’ type dogs should be just that. Those breeds should not be owned by the general public.

Signed and shared....

serenghetti2011 · 15/01/2023 20:50

We have to pay for them locally. My dog is a golden retriever, big daft thing that bounds about happy as Larry just doesn’t like to go home. No way would he be near kids play parks off lead. Some people just don’t care and those people won’t change either way sadly

Misspacorabanne · 15/01/2023 20:50

Yes, 100 percent! I've signed, and my family have too! Bloody dogs are every where! Can't take your kids to the local park anymore without dogs running all over the place! Hate how some dog owners let them run towards you, thinking every one loves dogs as much as them! My child is terrified because on more than one occasion he's had a dog hurtle towards us! Get them on a lead in public places! Or designated areas for dogs at the very least.

PeachyPoppedBack · 15/01/2023 20:52

No thank you. I keep to safe areas such as approved dog beaches and a local field everyone uses for the purpose, why should well cared for dogs pay them price for badly behaved humans?

As a volunteer at a rescue I can tell you that people who don’t look after their dogs won’t care, only the ones who were never a problem. There’s no money or personnel to monitor this. See also: compulsory chips.

Where I live there are strict rules on sports pitches etc and people adhere fo them because there are other areas our dogs can play ball and run about with other friendly dogs. There are no proper dog parks nearby, or on bus routes.

We need new dog laws but around breeding etc, that should be the focus.

Mansbestfriend2023 · 15/01/2023 20:56

I don’t disagree that out of control dogs are an increasing problem, but it sounds as though the ones that killed the woman the other day were on leads.

It does seem so. From the news it sounds as though the dogs got tangled, so she couldn’t get away and the dogs were panicking and attacking whatever was there. Possibly one dog went either for her or another, and this triggered the whole attack ? Tragic. A different situation to most of the deaths by dogs recently.

Mansbestfriend2023 · 15/01/2023 20:57

@Misspacorabanne its a total nightmare isn’t it. Our local parks are basically dog toilets.

You didn't actually read that report, did you? Because what it said was that keeping dogs on leads increased the levels:
"The scientists had recorded whether the dogs were on leads or not and when this was taken into account, 126kg/ha/year of nitrogen was deposited by paths and 4kg/ha/year over the rest of the nature reserves. If the dogs were all kept on leads, the amount jumped to 175kg/ha/year by paths, with a similar rise in phosphorus."

And please get serious. Dogs are allegedly destoying the eco-system in some areas, and yes, that should be addressed. Humans, on the other hand, are destrying the entire bloody planet, and God alone knows how many eco-systems we've destroyed in the last few hundered years. But by all means, blame the dogs. Have you heard about the damage rabbits do!!!!

Mansbestfriend2023 · 15/01/2023 21:03

@Quveas yes of course I’ve read it. I’ve done further reading on it too. What they are now looking into is if we can keep dogs on paths then we can contain the issue to a smaller area rather then spreading out. This is part of the reason lots of nature reserves are now asking for dogs to be kept on leads.
