@Minimalme my mother has a dog that’s reactive as it’s fearful. So she should get it killed? Ridiculous.
By law a dog on a short lead is deemed to be under control. Off lead dogs shouldn’t run up to a leashed dog.
@YouJustDoYou I have giant sighthounds. They need to run for their health.

Works fine in the US. My dog was a life-long on lead. No issues. Dogs would be fine on lead. It's just stupid owners who think they MUST be "off lead" to be happy dogs.

Keeping a working breed on a lead is a recipe for disaster ie bored and frustrated dog = destructive and anxious behaviour. However yes they should be trained through breed appropriate training delivered by qualified professionals.

@Mansbestfriend2023 Haven't most recent attacks have been in the home I believe, so leads wouldn't have saved anyone (happy to be corrected on this).

I'd be more open to compulsory muzzles before keeping all dogs on leads. I think not allowing dogs to burn off energy has the potential to increase attacks rather than prevent them.

So where exactly do people who want a dog-free place go? Please give me an exact list, as that is much harder than finding "dog friendly" locations

How about almost all beaches, that ban dogs between the months of May to September?

I was a dog walker for almost a decade. I can count on one hand the amount of aggressive/fighting incidents amongst my dog clients. The dog walker who was killed made huge mistakes, too many dogs, too much size discrepancy amongst the dogs she took. Locals said she was regularly seen doing this and someone close to her admitted it too. It was a disaster waiting to happen. I am not victim blaming, but I was aghast when I read what her practices were.

How do you know this????

Nope absolutely not. No point.

Interesting. However in a country that lets everyone carry guns in public - I know it varies state to state but still…I’m not sure why they can’t apply that efficiency in controlling their gun laws too.

It’s being widely reported - the breeds of dogs, the amount of dogs, witnesses who had seen her previously. Easy to find if you look.

@BethDuttonsTwin that being said, any beach we go to, dog owners see it as their God given right to override such rules? I have many photos to prove the case, even where the poor life guards are dragged (not by me) to argue with people that there are plenty of nearby dog welcoming beaches - when they should in reality be watching people in the water. The mind really does boggle.

I’m sure you’re right. As always it’s crappy, selfish owners who are the problem and I just can’t accept that good owners with happy, well behaved dogs should have to suffer for those fools. I watch my dog like a hawk when we are out. He’s quite slow moving (short legs) and has no interest whatsoever in other people, actively ducks away if they approach him. He’s cute and fluffy. I have far more problems with people and children trying to interact with him when he doesn’t want them to. Maybe I should start a petition against them 😁

Signed.

I was almost attacked, circled by two large barking dogs, with two young children, and the owner not within sight. The owner did appear but I dread to think what might have happened.

@sensiblepetra I'm sorry you experienced that. Very scary!

but do you (& others) really think people like this will comply?

Or will it just be already responsible owners who have control of their off lead dogs anyway?

it would have helped the woman last week, nor any of the others in the news recently.

@BethDuttonsTwin you absolutely should. Perhaps we should bring back those public health adverts. One of which is to warn parents not to let children pet random dogs. My 3 year old knows dogs can be dangerous and not to go anywhere near them. She comes to me if a dog is approaching and we cross the road/ Move away

I have seen this argued on FB - public service films - and I agree. They used to scare the crap out of me and I carry the messages from them to this day. When those poor little boys died from going on the ice in December I saw someone arguing that this would never have happened if children today were shown the films that we were in the 70s & 80s. I think they made us tough and sensible. Maybe a petition to bring them back too?! 😉

idonothatedogs · 15/01/2023 19:57

@BethDuttonsTwin absolutely you should start a petition, far too many decent dog owners are currently being overlooked by the few bad owners. What is they say - bad news travels fast.

@Mansbestfriend2023 maybe the public

@Mansbestfriend2023 maybe the 1970s/1980s films really are the way forward to make people think

I'm not a dog owner.
That's not going to work. There are places where dogs can run safely and punishing dogs for crappy humans is unfair. Could forbidding dogs from running increase violent incidents because they are frustrated ? It's the same reason why play time is so important at school. A run around outside is good physically and emotionally and an end to that would mean grumpy kids with poorer behaviour in the classroom. (I'm not saying dogs equal humans. It's just an analogy)

Ylvamoon · 15/01/2023 19:59

@idonothatedogs apart from the beaches already mentioned, we have 2 large country parks/ reservoirs where dogs have to be on leads.
One country park / nature reserve: no dogs allowed but a massive crapark and adventure playground for kids.
This is offset by 2 parks where dogs are allowed to run free once you have left the 'commercial area' (car park, playground and cafe)

That's plenty in my eyes for humans but very little for dogs.

I totally agree. I see people approaching working dogs even though they are wearing a vest saying please leave me alone because I'm working.

No way . I have trained my dog - I can walk past other people and dogs with her off lead and say ' keep on walking ' and she will totally ignore . Why should she be penalised ?

@Ylvamoon if only I lived closer to you. We have nothing of the sort where humans are prioritised near us.
