The dogs ( untrained, poorly controlled, possibly larger) who are most likely to be of major concern are quite capable of overpowering an owner and being dangerous or a pain on a lead.
Leads or not is not the issue . Also very unfair for the majority of dogs who are no problem whatsoever off lead.

SilverBirchWithout · 15/01/2023 19:12

Irresponsible owners will still exist, whether or not Dogs are on leads. The very irresponsible ones will ignore the law to keep on a lead.
What is needed is more education and controls that deal with this small group of bad owners who fail to train their dogs properly.

Dartmoorcheffy · 15/01/2023 19:15

Not a chance. Kids play areas should be enclosed and dog free, most already are. Dogs should be licensed and people vetted for large breeds like the one in the latest incident. An out of control dog weighing 11 stone could kill anyone and really shouldn't be kept unless by extremely responsible people who can control it. That size of dog would be stronger than the owner even on a lead.

CollieDug · 15/01/2023 19:17

Nope.

Ihavehairlikeworzelgummidge · 15/01/2023 19:20

It is a no from me. My working cocker loves to run of his lead. Prefect recall, he goes on his lead when we are walking in the sheep fields. He isn't bothered at all by people or other dogs and most of the time will ignore everyone. Than again, I live in the countryside so only occasionally we see another local dog walker otherwise we don't meet anyone.

RaiseTheStakesAndMakeTheLastWordDuckhead · 15/01/2023 19:20

No to this one, but I'd happily sign one limiting dog walkers to 3 large or 4 small dogs per walk.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 15/01/2023 19:21

Nope my dog has twice been bitten by dogs on leads (and he was on his lead, not running up to them, just trying to pass by). He’s never been bitten by an off lead dog.

Tontostitis · 15/01/2023 19:22

Nope

Minimalme · 15/01/2023 19:22

Nah, no need.

Posts on here where someone has been "encircled by two large dogs, which nearly attacked (but didn't)" are ridiculous.

There are loads of places to go where dogs aren't allowed at all. Just stick to them fgs and stop the hysteria.

idonothatedogs · 15/01/2023 19:22

Parks should be dog free other than designated areas.

I am so sick of dogs being given more respect than humans 😡 Keep your dogs to their areas! Why would I want a dog to come bounding over to me / anyone else in a park? Why would I want to share a dog in a cafe / pub / restaurant? Give me my own space please!

It seems to me that an increasingly small public space is dog free. Why?

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 15/01/2023 19:23

aAbsolutely @Cileymyrus the people who let their kids run up 😡. I have a medium sized, fluffy dog. She’s extremely appealing. The amount of times I have to say ‘no!’ and ‘stop!’ to toddlers running up to her. She’s gentle and not at all interested in kids but the general public don’t know that.

Put kids on leads in parks until they learn recall!

RaininSummer · 15/01/2023 19:23

My collie cross would be both unhappy and unhealthy if kept on lead all the time.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 15/01/2023 19:23

@Babyroobs but if we’re approaching a dog on a lead I call him and put him on the lead to pass, or if he’s heading to a toddler I get him to come to me or lay down where he is.

i feel this argument is like non cat owners getting cross owners don’t stop their cats going into neighbour’s gardens and pooping. Some people forget animals have needs too and humans kill many more people than dogs.

Mansbestfriend2023 · 15/01/2023 19:24

I do appreciate that there are good dog owners and good dogs who will be inconvenienced by this but I think the sacrifice is worth it to save lives. 8000 dog attacks year in the U.K.! It’s terrifying.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 15/01/2023 19:25

It will never happen, but there are dogs that should be on leads in public places. Usually ones owned by people who haven't bothered to teach their dog recall. It's usually smaller dogs, ime.

I don't particularly like dogs (and have stitches to show that "they are friendly" isn't always correct), but think it's the bad owners who need punishing, not the dogs.

But I would love the - unenforceable - rule that if you are every asked to recall your dog by someone, you have to do it immediately.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 15/01/2023 19:25

It’s not about being inconvenienced it’s about meeting dogs’ needs depending on their breed and keeping working dogs on leads is cruel in my opinion.

Wolfiefan · 15/01/2023 19:26

And how many of those are people who are bitten in their own homes by their own dogs.
If this is because of the latest awful news I believe those dogs (at least some of them) were on leads.
It is already law to have your dog under control in a public place. Start ensuring all owners know that and have the skills to make it happen.

Minimalme · 15/01/2023 19:26

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 15/01/2023 19:21

Nope my dog has twice been bitten by dogs on leads (and he was on his lead, not running up to them, just trying to pass by). He’s never been bitten by an off lead dog.

This is awful, your poor pup.

The MN dog posts I loathe are the "my dog is aggressive and reactive so I keep him on lead but other owners don't give us the necessary 1 mile distance which makes my dog prone to bite".

Any dog who is aggressive and reactive should be pts.

ThuMuClu · 15/01/2023 19:27

My sighthound is always on lead unless we go to fenced areas as no amount of training can stop him bolting. He also doesn’t like other dogs and I do wish people wouldn’t just be happy to let their dogs run up to him, snap at him etc, with no attempt to call them back or recognise that just because their dog “just wants to play” mine doesn’t. This is a people / training issue though. I also agree with the pp about people training their children - mine had it drilled into them from a young age you never approach, let alone touch, a dog unless invited.

doodleygirl · 15/01/2023 19:28

It’s a no from me. Lets concentrate on prosecuting bad owners, laws to stop puppy farms, tighter dog owning regulations and authorities that actually do something when you report abuse.

Tekkentime · 15/01/2023 19:28

Signed 🤞

YouJustDoYou · 15/01/2023 19:28

Works fine in the US. My dog was a life-long on lead. No issues. Dogs would be fine on lead. It's just stupid owners who think they MUST be "off lead" to be happy dogs.

RavenT · 15/01/2023 19:28

No from me.

devildeepbluesea · 15/01/2023 19:29

Not a chance.

idonothatedogs · 15/01/2023 19:29

So where exactly do people who want a dog-free place go? Please give me an exact list, as that is much harder than finding "dog friendly" locations
