to ask why you wouldn’t sign the petition?

The petition set up by Amy Desir (one of the women who self identified as a man to attend a men only swim session) is asking the government to consult women on privacy and dignity that could be removed or impacted by proposed changes to the gender recognition act.

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/214118

The petition is merely asking for debate - doesn’t it come to something when women have to petition the government to have to ask to debate their safety?

Most gender critical feminists recognise trans human rights but we don’t want their identity and wishes to be placed above our safety.
I posted on MN recently about my experience of living in a domestic violence refuge as a child and now I was terrified of men, a male bodied person presenting as a female in that safe space would have terrified me and impacted my PTSD more than the other experiences already have.

If you haven’t signed it why not? Please reconsider, if only so both sides can be heard. Of course signing isn’t mandatory and I’m not angry but I would be interested in hearing more.

If you would like to sign it, you can find it here

Okay for those who may not get it.

If you don't want to sign then start your own petition: I'm not in favour of women being consulted regarding the gender recognition act.

Is that clear enough?

ilikebread · 21/03/2018 20:13

MrsMcGarry But this isn’t good for trans people either. It’s a way for the government to cut funds for much needed support and services to trans people

Frequency · 21/03/2018 20:13

What is transphobic about the petition?

Yddraigoldragon · 21/03/2018 20:13

It’s not, never has been about genuine trans women.

To me it is about the guy that gets his kicks from ‘flashing’ women and girls. At present he must buy a dodgy mac and hide in the bushes... and make sure he has a good reason for being there if challenged.

If this becomes law he can spend time in ladies toilets, changing rooms, etc without challenge.

Women who feel very uncomfortable following sexual assault, who cannot contemplate spending time with an unknown male.

All of the posters that felt uncomfortable sharing a post natal ward with random unknown men, the comment was that it was invasive when women were at their most vulnerable. Many women would feel uncomfortable in the same way when changing after swimming where there were obvious ‘men’ in the ladies changing room.

It frightens me.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 21/03/2018 20:13

So when it happens the other way it will be hurtful to women?

Fairenuff · 21/03/2018 20:14

Hey hang on Elendon. I have been nothing but respectful on this thread.

I don't know what you mean, which is why I asked. And I ask again - Are you in favour of women being consulted regarding self id?

If not, fine, just say so.

ilikebread · 21/03/2018 20:15

Fairenuff I don’t understand either....

TopBitchoftheWitches · 21/03/2018 20:15

So it's transphobic for a woman to Id as a man and join a male swimming session.

Would it also be transphobic for a male to Id as a woman and join a female swimming session??

AlonsosLeftPinky · 21/03/2018 20:16

I have been a victim of rape, thanks very much.

I'm still very much in favour of mixed gender spaces with cubicles where appropriate. I don't feel the need for some protected sanctuary in what is a functional place, i just need to get in and pee or change or whatever it may be.

And the aggressive attitude shown just on this very post is enough on its own to make me say no.

PunkrockerGirl59 · 21/03/2018 20:16

Signed.
Because if something is not done to stop this madness then once again the rights of women and girls will be kicked under the bus.
I despair Sad

Snowsnake · 21/03/2018 20:16

Just signed...maybe people haven't heard about it...I hadn't till just now

SpringNowPlease2018 · 21/03/2018 20:16

Windchimes "I wouldnt be able to sign this as I dont agree with what she did at all and do think elements of the whole stunt were very transphobic and hurtful"

In what way? Some of you will know me, I NC often though.

My BFF is gay and I have two transsexual friends - old school, full surgery, MTF.

the transsexuals have signed and would never have gone to a ladies loo before medical transition. My BFF no longer wears anything other than suits and jeans, he used to wear dresses and makeup but doesn't want to be thought of as transgender.

Somehow we all manage to be friends and we can't see parallels between gay hate and the current stuff at all. And we're the age bracket who saw a lot of gay hate.

AlonsosLeftPinky · 21/03/2018 20:16

Those of us who don't want to sign it don't need to do anything. We've no issue to petition for, we're happy with things as they are.

@Fairenuff pretty sure Ekendin said upthread they’d signed it...

ilikebread · 21/03/2018 20:18

AlonsosLeftPinky I’m happy with the way things are too - it’s the changes I am concerned about. But if debated properly I might be fine with it all!

SpringNowPlease2018 · 21/03/2018 20:18

It is asking for consultation, which seems a small ask for a major change in law.

NoSquirrels · 21/03/2018 20:19

we're happy with things as they are

Ummm ... I’m happy with things “as they are” I.e. no self ID, medical & social proof required.

I’m not happy with how things could change...

Fairenuff · 21/03/2018 20:20

we're happy with things as they are

I agree. As are most of us. However, we are asking to be consulted on how things are going to be which is very different to how they are now.

If you think women don't need to have a say at all about that, then fine. That's your stance.

RaininSummer · 21/03/2018 20:21

Bloody hell. The petition is just asking that the implications for women are discussed and this thing is not railroaded through. No transphobia or hate at all and nothing to be scared of really.

Elendon · 21/03/2018 20:22

I've been a victim of sexual abuse and I don't like the changes being proposed.

So where does that leave us Alonsos?

puglife15 · 21/03/2018 20:22

If this petition is just about encouraging debate, why on earth would anyone lose their job over it?

It's clearly not just about that, is it?

I'm not aware of any men posing as trans (ie non genuine) who have done what that Amy person did...?

But then I try to steer clear of the whole row as both sides hardly cover themselves in glory.

Fairenuff · 21/03/2018 20:22

Did they Squirrels? So they signed a petition in favour of women being consulted but post that they are not in favour of women being consulted? Confused

BlackeyedSusan · 21/03/2018 20:23

not everyone is the same. just because one person is fine with mixed sexes after an assault, does not mean that others are.

I am surprised at the lack of care for others who are vulnerable.

Sandsnake · 21/03/2018 20:25

Signed, because I agree with it. I’m not totally in line with everything that I see regarding the trans debate here, but I do with this.
