to ask why you wouldn’t sign the petition?

The petition set up by Amy Desir (one of the women who self identified as a man to attend a men only swim session) is asking the government to consult women on privacy and dignity that could be removed or impacted by proposed changes to the gender recognition act.

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/214118

The petition is merely asking for debate - doesn’t it come to something when women have to petition the government to have to ask to debate their safety?

Most gender critical feminists recognise trans human rights but we don’t want their identity and wishes to be placed above our safety.
I posted on MN recently about my experience of living in a domestic violence refuge as a child and now I was terrified of men, a male bodied person presenting as a female in that safe space would have terrified me and impacted my PTSD more than the other experiences already have.

If you haven’t signed it why not? Please reconsider, if only so both sides can be heard. Of course signing isn’t mandatory and I’m not angry but I would be interested in hearing more.

If you would like to sign it, you can find it here
petition.parliament.uk/petitions/214118 - your details are kept private. Please consider sharing.

Those who are scared, I get it but we are being walked all over here by a very damaging agenda and no I'm not scaremongering or Transphobic. Trans should have rights and be protected.... But do should women and girls, who's going to fight for their rights to privacy and dignity.

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 21/03/2018 19:55

Thanks everyone who is signing it, you’re doing a service to women.
Thanks also for all the different view points, I welcome debate.

I want safety for women and girls to be top of the agenda for government. We cannot have this when our daughters are being housed in what were formally sex segregated areas, with natal males at guides camps. Why are we supposed to shut up and support this? Why are we supposed to shut up and support lesbian erasure?

I don't feel any more threatened by men than I do by women

Good for you but what about rape and sexual violence survivors? Do you not think they should get the choice?

LyndaSnellsFeet · 21/03/2018 19:57

totally fail to see how trans women going about their lives like women

What do you mean going about their lives like women? What does that entail?

Fairenuff · 21/03/2018 19:57

I don't feel any more threatened by men than I do by women. I'm all in favour of mixed gender spaces.

Do you not think that those women who do feel threatened by men (victims of rape/violence for example) should be considered at all?

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 21/03/2018 19:58

Alonsos that’s an interesting position. I’m glad you’re feel safe, long may that continue. What about then millions of women who have good cause not to feel safe around men and those born male? Do we leave vulnerable women to fight against men for their rights?

If you don't want to sign then start your own petition:

I'm not in favour of women being consulted regarding the gender recognition act.

ilikebread · 21/03/2018 20:00

I think people are missing the point that this isn’t great for trans people either! It’s potentially taking away much needed services for them such as coucelling and help from doctors. I honestly think it’s a way for the goverment to cut spending to help these people!

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 21/03/2018 20:01

Yes or
“I’m not in favour of women being consulted about the future of their identity.”

OP posts:
NoSquirrels · 21/03/2018 20:01

I’ve signed. It’s totally confidential.

I’m not transphobic or Trans Exclusionary. I’m not radical, or rabid.

I'm happy for people to live however is most meaningful to them, as long as it doesn’t harm others.

I’m not happy politicians and organisations are saying “biology is outdated” or that children (teens in particular) should accommodate people if the opposite sex in environments that are inappropriate to do so for safeguarding.

If your teen comes home pregnant from a school or youth organisation sleepover because they shared gender-segregated sleeping arrangements and not sex-segregated and some “lesbian” experimentation occurred that involved a penis, would you care it had at least been an open and inclusive space to discover that biology does in fact matter?

I don’t care on my behalf. I am big enough and bad enough to look out for myself. I care deeply about other more vulnerable people.

I want a chance to have reasonable arguments heard, because we live in a democracy and you can’t chdnge laws by stealth.

Counselling*

Mogleflop · 21/03/2018 20:02

Oh god don't Elendon. That petition would fly given the mass hysteria around trans issues. I'm amazed there hasn't been one demanding that "TERFs" are imprisoned or something.

Elendon · 21/03/2018 20:02

But this isn't about trans people ilikbread

BlackeyedSusan · 21/03/2018 20:02

It is significant for the followers of some religions who would not be able to access some services if men are present or potentially present.

Are rape victimes pathetic for not wanting to be examined by a biological man, perhaps a rape victim that is under 16?

windchimesabotage · 21/03/2018 20:03

I wouldnt be able to sign this as I dont agree with what she did at all and do think elements of the whole stunt were very transphobic and hurtful.
So although I do agree there should be some sort of debate going on I am suspicious of this petition and the person who has started it. So I will not be signing.

ilikebread · 21/03/2018 20:03

Elendon The GRA will affect trans people and woman

Elendon · 21/03/2018 20:04

Mogleflop

But it hasn't happened. Has it?

Elendon · 21/03/2018 20:05

Ilikebread

Not the issue of the petition though.

ilikebread · 21/03/2018 20:06

Elendon Yes I know I’ve signed the petition. I’m just saying that the proposed changes have a negative consequence for trans people too.

Fairenuff · 21/03/2018 20:08

I'm not in favour of women being consulted regarding the gender recognition act.

Elendon are you in favour of women being consulted regarding self id?

Elendon · 21/03/2018 20:09

Yes trans people will have negative consequences, but that is for trans people to sort out.

Not me. I'm not trans.

ilikebread · 21/03/2018 20:10

Elendon okay so you don’t care about woman’s voices and you don’t care about trans peoples voices.

Elendon · 21/03/2018 20:10

Piss off Fair

You know exactly what I mean't by that post, as did others. Stop shit stirring.

MrsMcGarry · 21/03/2018 20:11

Because I don't want to identify with bigoted transphobes who are dressing up their misandry as feminism.

SuburbanRhonda · 21/03/2018 20:12

I dont agree with what she did at all and do think elements of the whole stunt were very transphobic and hurtful.

Which elements?
