Here we are on the fourth instalment of crazy misspellings, misuse of words and all the other topsy-turvy attempts at literacy from the illiterate.
Post your observations. Lady’s the flaw is youre’s…

I'm getting tired (on several levels) reading about our "boarders" which should be better patrolled by the "Boarder Force".

These boarding schools are really getting out of hand.

I don't usually comment about grammar on a thread but I will if a poster claims to be a teacher. I used to be a teacher and would have pointed out errors to a colleague. My old headteacher used to read every report or letter that was sent out. A couple of times she found typos in mine and once asked me to change a comma - I didn’t agree but did what she said. I have read some atrocious grammar in letters from my grandchildren's schools.

There was a teacher on a thread here a while back who insisted 'should of' was correct. She was rightly jumped on.

Re. your second to last sentence....That. Is. Terrifying.

I saw to all intense purposes the other day

I've seen it written as "for all intensive purposes." 🤣🤣🤣

Re. your second to last sentence....That. Is. Terrifying.

Almost as terrifying as. One. Word. Sentences.
Please. Make. Them. Stop.

One word cannot be a sentence, despite opinions to the contrary.

@Whosthetabbynow , 'No.' is a complete sentence. Smile

Zimunya · 22/09/2026 10:23

Surely "Hello" and "Goodbye" are also complete one word sentences?

Absolutely.

Edited. Too. Correct. A. Typo. Loosing. My. Touch. Can't. Bare. It.

Quite.

Why?

AlbieJiggered · 22/09/2026 12:48

Don't. Come. Here.
All correct but not when you mean 'Don't come here.'

Seen on here today, someone talking about pouring champaign

That's either I have seen, or I saw. Seen drives me mad!

Libre2 · 22/09/2026 13:03

I have just come across a "mind field" in a thread on here. Is that a typo, or is that a misheard-never-seen-in-print thing?

Surely they’re just statements or ‘words’?

A sentence is a group of words

Since a sentence is defined as beginning with a capital letter and ending with a full stop and usually, but not always, having a verb in it, how would you describe those 70 words in the link I quoted, if not as "sentence words"?

Social media has been a mind field for decades.

I’m no professor of linguistics but ‘sentence words’ don’t make a sentence on their own. They’re simply words that can be used in a sentence 🤷‍♀️ A sentence is a group of words used together to form a sentence.

Dictionaries define ‘sentence’ in different ways. Some are e.g. ‘group of words that gives a complete thought and contains a subject and a verb’ whereas others are more flexible e.g. ‘ a grammatical unit of one or more words that expresses an independent statement, question, request, command, exclamation, etc., and that typically has a subject as well as a predicate, as in John is here. or Is John here?’.

I’m inclined to think that in practice it’s the ‘complete thought’ concept that matters most, and that can be one word. But in such cases a context is required (what am I saying “No!” to?) and so I suppose arguably it’s not a complete thought.
