I am no SPAG pedant as I am rubbish at it, but I am a pronunciation pedant.

Please, if this is you, change your ways!

Crwassohn but with the n nasal

Yes I know how the French pronounce it obviously. I did do French GCSE and remember Jean Paul and what he had for breakfast.

I'm just saying I pronounce it myself just as a day to day person in the privacy of my own kitchen as cwassont. So nearly french but WITH A T!!!!

HugoThatway · 19/03/2026 20:02

Nearly French but without the R and with a T.

Last year’s Traitors cast were particularly bad for this!

But you sound like a tosser if you say 'cleeeek' like a French wannabe.

Similarly - QwAHssohnnn for croissant (crosson).

But it's perfectly easy to pronounce both clique and croissant correctly but still use an English accent. I don't sound French when I say them.

This.

I don't say mangetout as mange tout (as in mangy and ticket tout) but I don't put on a fake accent when I say it.

Isn’t that because most of us thought it was a French pronunciation? It’s only recently I learned you pronounce the T (Mowett). Even Freddie Mercury sang Moet with a silent T in Killer Queen.

Yes, it’s a thing I found out recently but I think some people are saying Brits shouldn’t or don’t pronounce words like a native speaker would so that’s an example of one that nearly everyone feels confident pronouncing.

loewe the fashion brand is a divisive one ( I’m doubting my spelling!).

I am not too bothered about sounding like a tosser to someone who can’t pronounce a word correctly . It’s quite a basic word. What would be the outcome of them thinking me a tosser? Would that affect me in any way?

C'est un matter de opinion, je think.

@TorroFerney , do you say Bollinger or bɔlɛ̃ʒe?

I've only heard it said as an English word and that's how i say it.
I also say Moway because I like hearing someone say 'it's actually Mow-it' Grin

You don’t need to say it with extra ‘e’s. Two ee’s are quite sufficient.

But there is an umlaut though TBF. So why would you drop the t anyway? Even if you wanted to ignore the umlaut and pronounce it in an English way. You've just ponced it up a bit. It would be like saying crickay instead of cricket.

HugoThatway · 20/03/2026 14:36

@Pineneedlesincarpet , cricket is from criquet.

Moët doesn't have an umlaut, it has a diaeresis.

Oh yes. Apologies.

Ok. Not crikaay then. That was just a random suggestion. Any other english word that you drop the t from for no good reason. Such as twat. Would you say twa'? Unless you were from South London I suppose.

It's a champ des mines out there.

As I am always pointing out about the Brontës.

Not Moet (with the not-an-umlaut) though.

I think you might mean "any" of them, there being three sisters (and a brother) of course.
