I am no SPAG pedant as I am rubbish at it, but I am a pronunciation pedant.

Please, if this is you, change your ways!

It's only in Spain where they speak with the lisp anyway. In every other Spanish and Portuguese speaking country, they would not say choreetho.

They wouldn't say choritzo though. They'd say chorisso.

I know how to say most things correctly but I tend to say them in the English way as I sound like a knob suddenly saying a random Spanish pronunciation in between a London accent. People know what I mean.
I do say clique although I have been known to say clicky because most people think it’s correct to say clicky and when I say cleeky they think I’m pronouncing it wrong

ThankFuckTheSunIsHere · 18/03/2026 22:13

gimmek2 · 18/03/2026 21:25

Parfait

But I’m female!

Nigel Faridge eating his porridge?

Not as much as click which is a noise.

Every time a Mner complains about a click in the schoolyard, I imagine the Sharks and the Jets snapping their fingers over the opening credits of West Side Story.

stickydough · 18/03/2026 22:51

I thank you for drawing attention to this one, as I feel it is venturing into the same realms as ‘draw’ - I think many of the people who say and write ‘click’ think that’s the actual term and are completely oblivious.

girlfromthesouthcountry · 18/03/2026 23:22

Out of interest, does anyone here say lanzheree rather than lonzheray? Because lanzheree is surely closer to the French pronunciation of lingerie, but I've never heard anyone say it (even a smart arse pedant).

I do hate click for clique though. And I say gooseberry, not goozberry (to go back to a previous post). Is there a definitive Pedants' Corner line on that one?

Ive never pronounced it omaaage. It sounds hilarious. From saaf London so maybe thats why.

SwedishEdith · 19/03/2026 00:01

There was a tv documentary in the 70s where they were interviewing someone in a northern (I'm northern) working man's club. He said "It's like a clique. Know what I mean, a clique" but all pronounced as click. The interviewer clearly didn't know what he meant. Anyway, it became the family thing at any use of the word "clique" - "know what I mean, a click?".

likelysuspect · 18/03/2026 13:34

I think because we are uncomfortable in this country pronouncing foreign words with their pronunciation or accent

So I will sometimes say choreetho. But normally find myself saying Choritzo because I dont want to sound affected

I agree. I cringe when people take it too far, Rory Stewart comes to mind!
I guess it depends where you draw the line.
