Is it okay for me to start a second thread of the highly entertaining viscous attack? Couldn’t see a sequel and don’t want to step foot on anyone’s toes
edited to add: I’m Cattery but with a name change x

There's a woman just posted that something would be her absolute "phantasy". I thought it was a typo, but she repeated it! I rather like that spelling, actually!

To be fair to her, this is just a rather old-fashioned way of spelling fantasy and some people do use it in preference. So it's not a mistake as such.

I rather liked it. I don't know if she intentionally used that spelling, but I think it's preferable!

Shock I'm usually quite tolerant of spellos ... but really?! How can you have ever read anything without seeing how to spell 'exactly'? This version hasn't even got the right number of syllables. Or syllabubs, sillyballs or sybils ...

Maybe she says it as ‘exackerly’? (And also says likkle and bokkle. 😬)

I used to be on a forum with someone who’s username was Ed Zackerly, so not an unusual pronunciation, but that spelling is outrageous.

Freysimo · 31/08/2025 19:44

Fazakerley is a suburb of Liverpool if it's any help 😄

PendantScorner · 31/08/2025 19:57

it's not.

TheaBrandt1 · 31/08/2025 21:16

A celebrity is said to be “wizening up” to the fact his girlfriend is a gold digger. The celebrity is elderly so maybe not such a mistake!

SchnizelVonKrumm · 31/08/2025 21:19

I was browsing dresses online today and wondered why a navy blue one with a patterned print was described as "bridal print dress". Then I zoomed in and saw that the print had an equestrian theme Confused

That's brilliant!

Another example from local FB of someone repeating something they’ve heard said but never thought about the word’s meaning or seen it written down: “looking for a short term rental, min 2 bed with a well behaved / non malting dog”

AgentPidge · 02/09/2025 10:08

Someone on a post about a Pride march has just asked someone else what they're "whittling" on about.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 02/09/2025 10:22

I work in a supermarket and some of the mistakes on labels make me smirk. Just the other day I had to put out a really embarrassingly large store-printed label for 'Larger'. I did want to ask whether the lager in question was in bigger than average bottles, but as the apostrophes in the canteen have already addled my brain (instructions to 'wash up your own fork's and mug's), I didn't.

Justbecauseyoucandoesntmeanyoushould · 02/09/2025 11:16

I started a job some years ago with a small business. One of the first things they had me do was to send out late payment letters to customers. I refused to do it until they corrected the letter which said, "We respectively request that..."

Cathandkin · 02/09/2025 11:43

Someone on another thread being critical about Keir Starmer's shoes, because he wears "slip on's"

whittling is fine though, or am I missing something 🤔

Whittling is what you do to shape wood, with a knife.
I suspect they meant "wittering", or talking about something trivial, at length.

CalzoneOnLegs · 02/09/2025 11:49

@Cathandkin yes I know but I thought whittling was fine, I have just looked it up in true pendants style…😀 also I have heard wittering

‘Collins Dictionary has: Northern England, dialect, intransitive - to complain or worry about something continually’

Ok, so whittling can be used in a dialect form to have that meaning? I see.

CalzoneOnLegs · 02/09/2025 12:01

@Cathandkin I think so ! I was curious about why it may be wrong.

Oh dear.... I genuinely couldn't walk past that.

Catpiece · 02/09/2025 12:29

Aaah, the old apostrophe catastrophe. It honestly make’s me want to rip the sign’s down 😠
Love the “larger/lager” Who wouldn’t like a larger lager? I know I would

I remember going into my local library and there was a big notice about selling off some books: "book's for sale".
When I spoke to the librarian he was so rude! He said I should have taken it up with his English teacher. 🙄

Catpiece · 02/09/2025 12:34

Surrounded by all that literature and still can’t get it right. Not good is it
