A Viscous attack # 2

Catpiece · 15/08/2025 11:23

Is it okay for me to start a second thread of the highly entertaining viscous attack? Couldn’t see a sequel and don’t want to step foot on anyone’s toes
edited to add: I’m Cattery but with a name change x

It's a spelling mistake, @SchnizelVonKrumm . Slay bells doesn't make sense.

It makes no sense but I think it's deliberate - just a naff attempt at shoehorning a popular expression into some christmas tat. I'd put it in the same bracket as "Merry Petsmas" (which i saw today) - that makes no sense either 🤷‍♀️

newrubylane · 15/11/2025 20:22

Not quite the same thing, but today I saw a sentence in a magazine where 'onus' had been used to mean 'emphasis', and an Insta post stating that an object's purpose became obsolete, which is just such messy phrasing. I find the poor standard of written English online absolutely maddening.

*The irony: I had to edit this post to correct a typo 🤣

Ha ha ha. There is currently a thread asking posters to help guess the genda of an unborn baby

Late actress Genda Jackson did always look a little androgynous

Someone’s husband has got a high “labido”. I’m wondering if that’s a cross between libido and, well I’ll leave it to you to work out…

A cross between libido and a labrador: like a dog that humps your leg

AgentPidge · 16/11/2025 11:41

The 'box of old tut' could also have been stuff swiped from an Egyptian tomb, of course.

I had a look at the gift bags in the supermarket yesterday ( in the interests of research, obviously) and one said 'Beary Christmas'. Shock

I hope it's a typo but someone on a local FB page referred to their baby son Zephyr Soliel....... presumably means Soleil, but if deliberate would a registrar even ask? I used to work in a primary school and remember a Domneek so you never can tell

PendantScorner · 17/11/2025 17:47

@PipMartin , probably a typo - very common in names with adjacent vowels (e.g. Niel, Aiofe).

ElleneAsanto · 18/11/2025 19:15

According to BBC South, waste in Oxfordshire has been fly-tipped by “arctic” lorries. To be fair, the presenter did momentarily freeze as he read the autocue.

Theoscargoesto · 18/11/2025 21:18

Apart from the fact the post is badly spelt (we are talking about large white birds) this is a post on my local FB group. I want to cry.

Have the seams been chased off by mum and dad or predated?

'Seams'??
I can't think of any bird that could be pronounced seam.

Isn't it a typo for 'swans'? w is next to e and m is next to n on a keyboard.

I mistype things sll the time on a tiny phone screen keyboard. But because of that, I do check what I've typed and edit if necessary and possible.

Edited to prove it!

Someone who doesn’t like Christmas is a “scourge” which kind of works too!

Chersfrozenface · 19/11/2025 09:25

..all the time... obviously.

Particularly when I haven't had a coffee yet.

Love this. Love the word and love the fact that an attempt has been made at likening someone to a Dickens character. It’s a yes from me 🤣

This is really funny. It wasn’t the misspelling (and yes, for those in doubt, we are talking about swans) that got to me it was “predated”. That does not mean ‘killed by predators’. It means dated before an event.

Ah, swans!
I was wondering how you could pre-date birds. Must be something to do with chickens and eggs.

It's a mainly American usage but is rapidly gaining ground. It's a back-formation from predator etc., first recorded in 1974.

It's so common in the US that 'predate: with the meaning 'date from before, antedate' it's often spelled 'pre-date'.

Just seen that Donald Trump was annoyed at a reporter’s question and said that he’d been asked an insubordinate question.

He just trots out words he has no real understanding of.

I’ve just been looking through some apps on my phone. I decided to open the My Gp app to see if any services had been added or updated.
Apparently they now have a team dedicated to urinary track infections. This wasn’t a typo as it was on the site more than once. So let me get this right; they advise about something of which they have no understanding? Are they aware of the urinary tract? Do they all say “track” and that’s what it’s become? Think I’ll go private if i ever need any wee tested x
