Pedants' corner

A Viscous attack # 2

Catpiece · 15/08/2025 11:23

Is it okay for me to start a second thread of the highly entertaining viscous attack? Couldn’t see a sequel and don’t want to step foot on anyone’s toes
edited to add: I’m Cattery but with a name change x

There as in 'focused on there needs. '

TerminalMoraine · 31/10/2025 20:39

Just been reading a post with “he’s hoody’s” in the title. Surely not a typo?

No. Plus, throughout she refers to "hoody's" meaning plural.

MagpiePi · 02/11/2025 08:07

I am seeing far more use of ‘s incorrectly used to indicate plurals. I’ve just seen ‘mum’s’ and ‘40’s’ in recent posts and it is really starting to be irritating.

Catpiece · 02/11/2025 12:05

“Back to the 80’s”. Grrrrrr

I’ve just seen ‘bomb fire night’ 🎆🧨

‘…it is a back and fourth joke.’

🙄

That thread is a difficult read. I don't know what's worse, the OPs dogged assertion that spelling and grammar don't matter or the hijacking by a couple of equally dogged pedants.
Anyway, I really only came on here to share another annoyance last seen on a current thread about bullying, the use of "where" for "were". I see it a lot (alot?) and I'd be fascinated to know how it started. It's not quite on a par popularity-wise with "loose" and "lose", thankfully, but it's surprisingly common.
Add it to your mental list of irritations along with -

Bear and bare
Brakes and breaks
Reins and Reigns
Borders and boarders
Drawers and draws

Etc, etc. (Actually, that could be another one, etc and ect...)

I think the "where"/"were" thing is partly related to accents. Whenever I see "where" used incorrectly i read the post in my head in a Scouse accent Grin

Today on MN:

Scrap and scrape

“I try to squeeze all the cat food out but I find it disgusting so I am not going to use a teaspoon and scrap every last bit out of the sachet.”

“However, every time I feed the cat, DH goes into the rubbish bin, finds the sachet and then scraps the rest of the cat food out.”

Eek and eek

“DH also likes to ration the cat's food to avoid waste so he eeks out the cat food in small portions over the course of the day…”

PendantScorner · 03/11/2025 12:34

On MN today: 'Hopefully you will get plenty of great advice hear ...'

MagpiePi · 03/11/2025 13:38

@KhaleesiLikeSundayMorning
I read that and thought the first scrap must have been a typo but as it went on I realised it was deliberate.

And I just realised I should have written “eke”!

Borgonzola · 04/11/2025 09:59

Maybe the cat food was mouse flavoured?

There's a current thread where the OP keeps mentioning flairs (jeans).

Not relevant, but I am sick of the word literally. This has annoyed me: "I have literally 20 or so ..."

PendantScorner · 05/11/2025 10:31

I've just been asked this on another site:
'Pendant your not a man following and watch her, are you?'
I haven't answered.

Not worthy of a response x

The thread was by a 'girl' who "walked home petrified",after being followed by a man 'singing in another language' and 'He was not from this country.'

StanfreyPock · 06/11/2025 16:42

Just wondering if anyone is planning on making the 'tarte au citroen' mentioned on a recent Christmas food thread...🚗🚗🚗

My ex husband tried to persuade the Child Support Agency to order me to make payments to him, even though I had residency and custody orders for our sons, because I was 'a evel, viscous women'. Sic, sic, sic and sic.
I swear I could hear the laughter in the very reassuring letter the agency sent me.

HopeSpringsInfernal · 06/11/2025 17:13

Just seen 'you are being rather tackless'.

I couldn't quite pin down why it jarred with me...

Some people just don't have enough saddles and bridles though.
