A Viscous attack # 2

Catpiece · 15/08/2025 11:23

Is it okay for me to start a second thread of the highly entertaining viscous attack? Couldn’t see a sequel and don’t want to step foot on anyone’s toes
edited to add: I’m Cattery but with a name change x

Going back to the "could of/should of" nonsense, I came across a multifaceted horror on an American hobby forum I occasionally read. As far as I can tell, the poster was sorry to have missed out on an event, and, I quote -

"I wish I would of known that because I would of went"

I'll leave you all to parse that one. I think my eye is still twitching. Note also the irritating American usage of "would have" when "had" would do fine.

Tallisker · 25/10/2025 17:40

@Vroomfondleswaistcoatat least Paley’s doesn’t have errant apostrophes ☺️

ItsFineReally · 25/10/2025 18:06

No shade on the thread itself, but the title prompted a vivid image in the same vein as the original 'viscous attack'...

AIBU to loose my shit at my GP?

ItsFineReally · 25/10/2025 19:50

Another thread title... Power of eternity

Quite like this one. I'm also trying to work out whether it's a power I'd like or not. 🤔

Who posted it, Thanos?

He feels immaculated because his wife earns double what he does.

Catpiece · 26/10/2025 09:59

A book seen on sale at Tesco entitled Bored of Lunch. Surely it’s “with” lunch?

They should be band for using bad language in front of children.

It's the 'could of' in Active that makes me cringe. 'Could I of done differently?' or similar. Someone is actually WRITING 'could of' - do they never stop to think 'have I ever seen this written down in a formal piece of writing?'

Honestly, I could of clawed my eyes out.

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat , they don't even stop to think 'Of I ever...'

'Bored of' is another one that raises my hackles.

Chersfrozenface · 26/10/2025 10:14

When anyone says people shouldn't be criticised for using 'of' instead of 'have' "because we know what they mean", my go-to reply is "I of always said people should write however they like".

'Bored of lunch'? Surely it's 'bored have lunch'...

In thread about middle class lifestyles eroding, someone said they would stick their working class ore in and add to the discussion

Thus proving their point (yes, I know; classist comment)

Yes, I saw that book. I find it so sad that the publishers thought this was OK.

Catpiece · 28/10/2025 09:36

@AgentPidge Declining standards for sure.

Just noticed this in a colleague's email signature
'I work a 21.5 hour week – usually Tues, Wed & Thurs but may very'

It is grating on my nerves for a number of reasons, but it is mainly the 'very' at the end.

Catpiece · 29/10/2025 15:02

@MagpiePi Grrrrr

KhaleesiLikeSundayMorning · 30/10/2025 04:15

The OP’s continued use of “hoody’s” is killing me!

I should count myself among the vindictive crow’s (or harpy’s).

In another thread, “Husband’s wants to lunch with another woman”, though it was probably auto correct.

I think the “wants to lunch with” is likely a posher way of saying “wants to go to lunch with” although it may just be a common or garden omission of words on the part of the poster?

Edited

That thread is a difficult read. I don't know what's worse, the OPs dogged assertion that spelling and grammar don't matter or the hijacking by a couple of equally dogged pedants.
Anyway, I really only came on here to share another annoyance last seen on a current thread about bullying, the use of "where" for "were". I see it a lot (alot?) and I'd be fascinated to know how it started. It's not quite on a par popularity-wise with "loose" and "lose", thankfully, but it's surprisingly common.
Add it to your mental list of irritations along with -

Bear and bare
Brakes and breaks
Reins and Reigns
Borders and boarders
Drawers and draws

Etc, etc. (Actually, that could be another one, etc and ect...)
