Catpiece · 15/08/2025 11:23

Is it okay for me to start a second thread of the highly entertaining viscous attack? Couldn’t see a sequel and don’t want to step foot on anyone’s toes
edited to add: I’m Cattery but with a name change x

Seen in relationships, not gardening

Dead Beet

How do you all feel about ‘on rowt’ (sic) when watching US TV shows ?

In the song ‘Route 66’ it was correct so I don’t understand🤔

PendantScorner · 15/10/2025 14:48

'on rowt' is en route.

Americans find the root pronunciation rude, I think.

Yes I know but why was the song okay and when they refer to the famous Route 66

ETA and also ROOT beer ! I don’t think we will ever get to the bottom of this one.

PendantScorner · 15/10/2025 15:00

According to my search engine, both root and rowt are acceptable US English pronunciations.

British English seems to have different pronunciations of some words.

MagpiePi · 15/10/2025 16:30

It’s like American’s pronouncing ‘bouy’ as boo-ee.
I’d love to know how they got there!

Catpiece · 15/10/2025 16:51

I always thought that hyperbole was pronounced hyperbowl. Had no idea it was hyper-bo-lee 🤭

I have been listening to a book series , I love the books , the writing and narrator BUT he pronounces it like that and it's like nails on a blackboard , I miss the next few words while I recover .

@Catpiece , I always thought the same as you and that logistics was pronounced log-is-tics.

PendantScorner · 15/10/2025 19:12

I was listening to a book series on Radio 4 and the narrator said dahl-yas for dahlias, which sounded right for when the book was based.

MagpiePi · 15/10/2025 20:06

I must admit that I always say ‘quin-oh-ah’ in my head because ’keen-wah’ just sounds so pretentiously middle class and wanky.

I meant DIDN'T SOUND RIGHT.

I have a friend who says 'daytour' for detour. I have to bite my lip

Catpiece · 16/10/2025 15:55

I’ve just seen funfare listed as an attraction at a seaside resort 🎠

Yes, we say it like it’s pronounced in the original French.
Route being the French word for road as well as ‘route’, as in the way from A to B.
‘Rowt’ is really not at all common as a pronunciation in the UK. (Or at least in England)

Well, again it’s a French word and is pronounced day-tour.
How would you pronounce rendezvous? Surely ron-day-voo rather than ren-dezz-voos?
Dee-tour sounds more American to me and although I’m in the day-tour camp both ways are probably OK.

PendantScorner · 16/10/2025 16:30

@tartyflette , I say dee-tor and rondeyvoo. I also say shagrin not shagran (chagrin).

Tallisker · 16/10/2025 16:35

I’ve just seen “pedalling the myth”.

PendantScorner · 16/10/2025 16:38

Pesky cyclists peddling.

It’s too much of a mouthful really and I avoid using it for that reason

They are doing it to suite themselves.

Difficult behaviour is often exasperated by unsuitable environments.

Just saw an announcement about some news at work, telling me to “Stay tunned !”

I suppose I could relax in a large cask of wine while waiting to hear more

The space before the exclamation mark was also used several times

Catpiece · 17/10/2025 15:54

@KhaleesiLikeSundayMorning 😱 That’s shocking

KhaleesiLikeSundayMorning · 17/10/2025 16:03

@Catpiece , not the same person but it was also at work where I got an invitation to “Drinks and canopies” (mentioned by me in the first thread)

Catpiece · 17/10/2025 16:12

@KhaleesiLikeSundayMorning Omg! In my last office every Christmas we had someone who going to be bringing in crudities as their contribution to the yearly party food day. Every year I corrected this on the list. Never made the slightest difference 🤬

Aimed at people who are a barrel of laughs...
