I know this was spoken rather than written, but I literally just heard on a documentary where a perpetrator 'fleed the scene.' A documentary. I'll just let that sink in, that the voiceover person in a documentary couldn't use the word 'fled'.

In a documentary on Disney + someone said they were “taken back” to explain how shocked they felt. I’m hearing this more and more recently.

I worked with some who’d heard the word hindsight and threw it into sentences where it made no sense. “In hindsight what we should do is…”

There's nothing wrong with using plain, clear English, rather than phrases you don't understand. There was someone on tv who said he preferred chicken to pork in a dish because he wasn't "au fait" with pork.
