Pedants' corner

A Viscous attack # 2

Catpiece · 15/08/2025 11:23

Is it okay for me to start a second thread of the highly entertaining viscous attack? Couldn’t see a sequel and don’t want to step foot on anyone’s toes
edited to add: I’m Cattery but with a name change x

Unfortunately not. @PendantScorner is quite correct.

There for their and they're occurs too often to be remarkable, as does bare for bear.

Trending MN threads today included Can only marred couples answer please. and Furious with son and hid girlfriend

But these are surely just the result (nearly typed 'reslut'...) of people typing too fast, possibly on their phones - where the tiny keyboards can result in slips of the finger. They aren't misunderstandings for common words because the writer has never seen them written down before. Although I suspect that there are a lot of marred couples and many girlfriends have hidden, I think these have to be disallowed as 'Viscous Attacks' because they are just finger-slips/fast typing/lack of proof reading.

PendantScorner · 26/09/2025 15:28

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat , but that would mean viscous for vicious wouldn't be allowed.

It would if the user genuinely thought that viscous was how you spelled 'vicious'. Which I would not be at all surprised by. I don't think the pp thought that married was spelled 'marred' or his was spelled 'hid', which was why I think these are fingerslips. Viscous is exactly the sort of misuse of word that I would expect from someone who had never seen 'vicious' written down.

Catpiece · 26/09/2025 15:34

Ladies! I think viscous is definitely a misspelling of vicious. Marred is likely to be just a slip of the finger which has resulted in the I missing.

Thank you for your judgement! I was beginning to think we might be getting a bit too pedantic even for Pedants' Corner!

PendantScorner · 26/09/2025 15:56

I thought viscous in that context was an autocorrect of a misspelt vicious.

Reading a travel article, I saw Yr Wyddfa written as Wydffa.

Catpiece · 27/09/2025 12:52

I’d be none the wiser to be honest. I’m assuming that’s Welsh?

OP posts:
PendantScorner · 27/09/2025 13:54

Yes. It's the carelessness that is irritating. It can't be that difficult to check the spelling of a famous landmark. Yr Wyddfa

TheaBrandt1 · 27/09/2025 14:20

Seen someone described on a recent thread as being “holy unreasonable”

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 27/09/2025 15:14

I've just seen 'thornless' on here instead of 'thoughtless' (I presume, although thornless might be a new saying of which I was previously unaware...maybe). I intitially put it down to mistyping or autocorrect until it occurred again in the same post.

PendantScorner · 28/09/2025 10:21

On the there/their/they're discussion, I saw this today: "- not sure but think their might have been another stabbing!!".
I despair!

Catpiece · 28/09/2025 10:44

Shocking isn’t it? I’ve seen how someone wasn’t phased by something a few times on threads today.

I saw yesterday someone going to a party and said he and his wife will be bringing drinks and nipples. Presumably a typo but a very funny one considering the poster was unhappy that there would be a naked butler at the party 😆

Catpiece · 29/09/2025 15:23

I’m just reading about someone coughing up flem 🤣🤣🤣

Read a thread where the PP said that he was certainly laying out his stool (stall) regarding cheating in a relationship.

CalzoneOnLegs · 30/09/2025 05:18

I have just seen ‘out of sink’ 🙀

There’s a real increase in the slither / sliver mix up at the moment - even my normally sensible MIL fell foul (or should it be fowl?) of it the other day. It does seem that these confusions seem to happen in waves. I haven’t seen ‘changed tact’ for a while but at one point I saw it everywhere
