YY to 'gifted' in the 'I was gifted this' or, even worse, re Christmas 'the season for gifting'.

Where the hell is the verb 'to give' when you want it waving a placard?

On similar lines, when I was young (admittedly a while ago) if someone said they were interviewing for a job, it was perfectly clear that they were going to be the interviewer. Now they could be saying either 'I will be interviewing candidates for a job today' or 'I have a job interview today'. I suspect the old sense is on its way out, so anybody trying to say that will have to use more words and say 'I am on an interview panel today'. Harrumph.

Pronouncing chorizo as choritso as if it was an Italian word rather than choritho because it's Spanish. If you're going to go to the bother of pronouncing it in what you think is its original language then at least get the right bloody language

Actually, if you want to be pedantic about etymology it's pronounced "xo-ri-sso" as it's a Portuguese word (and I'm Portuguese).

Quote
Both words share a common origin in the Iberian Peninsula, with "chorizo" likely coming from the Portuguese "souriço"

It's brewsketta - in Italian ch is a hard k sound when followed by e or i 😊

Lo so, so I would be a pretentious English person and pronounce it the Italian way, or what were all those evening class lessons for?!

SonoPazziQuestiRomani · 08/04/2025 09:52

I have managed to reconcile the "panini" thing in my mind on the basis that the English translation of "panino" is "panini". So in English it's one panini, two paninis.

I am NOT reconciled. I believe I have been very pretentious and referred to a panino in a Wetherspoons, just the other day.

Using begging the question wrongly

I notice this frequently🙁👎🏻

ArmySurplusHamster · 08/04/2025 12:46

Over-exaggerate.

SparklyGlitterballs · 08/04/2025 12:52

People using 'seen' instead of 'seeing'......seen as I was going there anyway... I saw it used three times by two people on the same thread recently.

Likewise I hate when I see 'his' being used instead of 'he's'.

From the get go

´From the get go’ - makes my teeth itch 🤣

Beefburgers. This annoys me more than it should. They're hamburgers! Do people actually think they're sometimes made of ham?!

I always picture a medieval German town called Beefburg (just down the road from Cheeseburg, obviously!)

WisePearlPoet · 08/04/2025 19:25

I'm back because I have been further annoyed by the word 'gotten' being used in the UK to an alarming degree. We aren't in the USA and it isn't even a word.

The other one is 'do better'. It irritates me intensely.

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 08/04/2025 20:44

There appears to be an influx of threads referring to ‘Crush/Crushing On /Crushes’ it sounds really immature

Pronouncing bruschetta brooshetta

I ordered broosketa in a restaurant recently and had to repeat myself as the waiter had no idea what I was asking for …

Lindolander · 08/04/2025 21:43

Why instead of while.
I read a post yesterday where someone was appealing for help in buying treats for a child "why" she was in hospital.
"Sweets for child why she's in hospital.
Toys for child why she's in hospital."
It set my teeth on edge! I suppose I should be grateful it didn't say "why she's in hospickle".

“Stay Safe” 😡

Have a great holiday - stay safe!
Have a good night out - stay safe!
A cruise - how wonderful - stay safe !

It’s ok not to stay safe anymore 🙄

ToThineOwnSelf · 08/04/2025 22:04

“She loves her food”

Picky tea

Bedding (instead of bedsheets)

“We’re pregnant”

“Fair do’s”

I could go on 😂

How about Loewe?! 😂

Gifting. Gifted. I just don't understand what's wrong with "given"!

"I was gifted this wonderful scarf".

Or worse... "there was so much gifting going on"

Makes me actually angry!

Then it gets regifted!
