Not quite what you are asking but the ‘draw’ thing. On a thread just now with the title about a cutlery drawer, there is still someone in the thread talking about their draw. I have to resist saying something so venting here. Sorry.

Pronouncing chorizo as choritso as if it was an Italian word rather than choritho because it's Spanish. If you're going to go to the bother of pronouncing it in what you think is its original language then at least get the right bloody language

I agree but want to add that it's cho-ree-so in Latin American Spanish.

People make the same mistake with the name of Queen Letizia of Spain (although it probably does not come up as often as chorizo).

"Meet with" instead of "meet"

Use of plural forms when a singular form should be used, eg. - dice and die, data and datum, criteria and criterion.

Pronouncing strength as strenth and length as lenth

How else are they pronounced?

I pronounce them the first way, ie. strength not strenth.

Phonetically:

  • Strength: strengkth [IPA: streŋkθ] or strenth [IPA: strenθ]
So strength has a "k" sound before the "th"

“Don’t walk… Run!” Just because there’s a couple of quid off something somewhere.

It's tricky sometimes to get the balance between showing some fidelity to the original language and being heinously pretentious. Having studied some Italian I do cringe at "one panini". And the American pronunciation of "croissant" is an abomination.

I speak fluent French but it still feels weird to pronounce 'croissant' the correct French way in a supermarket in the UK so I do a strange Englishified version. (Never the US version though). Also my company name is French but when I say it to English people I don't roll the R in it correctly or they don't understand what the word is.

On the topic of Americans mispronouncing things.... all the memes, puns etc which are based on Van Gogh being pronounced 'van go' drive me mad. They don't call Monet 'mon-ett' so why come up with completely different pronunciation of Van Gogh?

’pitcher’ instead of picture. ‘Mirow’ instead of mirror.

Catching feelings
Lowkey
Shook/shooketh
Be like
It's giving
Screaming crying throwing up

and all other stupid millennial internet expressions, especially when used by non-millennials.

Edited

Gen Z are responsible for most of those. The average millennial is in their late 30s.

So I will add - blaming everything young people do on "millennials". It's no better than saying "ok boomer" 🙄

Meet with adds an element of intention that meet doesn't have. I met my boss =/= I met with my boss.

Streng-th
Leng-th

Or do people say stron and lon for strong and long?!

My children are Gen Z and would never say any of these. With the exception of screaming crying they are all 10+ years old expressions and are definitely millennial!

Thoughtsonstuff · 09/04/2025 07:52

Seketey is an irritant. I note they even pronounce it this way on the Today programme these days. The Business Seketey Jonathan Reynolds.

MagpiePi · 09/04/2025 07:54

Saying ‘corter’ instead of quarter.

Thoughtsonstuff · 09/04/2025 07:57

Also from the Today programme pronouncing the "patent" of an invention the same way as the pronunciation of a pair of patent shoes.

upinaballoon · 09/04/2025 07:57

Do you think some presenters of the 'Today' programme are more likely than others to say irritating things? I confess to my little prejudices.

upinaballoon · 09/04/2025 08:00

I have great respect for a former MP. So have many others. He never quite manages 'secretary', but it's always 'secertary'.

Forgive me for what seems like a de-rail but I'll try to make it fit. There's nothing actually wrong with calling Rome the city of love but I thought it was Paris that's the city of love and Rome is the eternal city. See today's reporting of the royal visit to Rome coinciding with the wedding anniversary.

upinaballoon · 09/04/2025 08:07

Is it 'OK, boomer' or 'OK boomer'? Am I an OK boomer? That's twice I've typed 'bommer'. Time to go.

Shodan · 09/04/2025 08:15

I'm back with a couple more.

'Munch on' and its variations. Nobody just eats anything any more- they all munched on sandwiches or whatever.

And 'enjoy!' or enjoy when it's used as a marketing tool- 'enjoy a delicious lunch at our cafe.' It feels a bit dictatorial to me. Why can't I just eat at the cafe and then decide for myself if I've enjoyed it?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 09/04/2025 08:47

How to wear a red lip!

It’s red lipstick, you sad, sad individual.

Smallmercies · 09/04/2025 09:25

Omg, Febuary! It's feb-r-u-ary. And refrectory for refectory.
