My pet hate is misuse of reflexive pronouns. This is an abomination. I remember in the 1999s this being a kind of joke stereotype used in the media specifically the police officers gave evidence in court and wanted to sound more ‘formal.’ It is now everywhere - They asked myself, The people there were x, y and myself. It makes me want to scream very loudly!

"On accident" really annoys me!

I quite like the Welsh lady who's often on 'The One Show' but she was myselfing away, probably on Monday, and I was muttering at her.

"On accident" really annoys me!

Everything seems to be 'on' these days, or certainly on MN. I'm sure growing up we'd say (rightly or wrongly) 'at the weekend', or 'at Easter', ie..I'm going to stay with my dad at Easter. Now it's "What are you doing on the weekend?", or "can I stay with you on Christmas?"

It just sounds wrong to me.

excelledyourself · 30/05/2025 21:07

“That being said” or “That said” is overused on here recently, and not always correctly. But used correctly or not, it does my head in simply because of the frequency.

In regard to the beef burger vs hamburger post, beef burger is or was commonly used in the UK and is fine to say if you’re talking about the meat part. It’s possibly when you put it in a bun it that it becomes a hamburger.

I can remember Birds Eye selling frozen beef burgers (and maybe they still do for all I know).

I’ve confused myself about whether it should be beef burger or beefburger so I’m going with what autocorrect prefers!

Although doesn’t everyone just refer to them as burgers now?

upinaballoon · 31/05/2025 13:10

Ham and beef are not the same. Our butcher sells lamb-burgers.

Of course beef burger is fine in the U.K., if it’s a burger made out of beef, regardless of whether it’s in a bun or not. ‘Hamburger’ is commonly used in the US to mean ground meat, which may be made into a patty but could also be used for a Sloppy Joe or suchlike.

What's a Sloppy Joe, please?

And what is a 'suchlike ' ?

RitaIncognita · 31/05/2025 23:08

But no one in the US would call a Sloppy joe a burger. It's just a Sloppy Joe. And delicious.

"Greg and I" by John Torode. At least I won't hear that specific one again but he'll do it with whoever replaces Wallace.

I'm stood.

I'm sat.

Lindolander · 05/06/2025 14:08

Hence why.
No need for the why!

ConfidentHarridan · 20/09/2025 22:07

Ahh the senseless “you do you”. It’s awful, thanks for your permission, I will do me because I am me. Also hunny or hun, kisses after every message xx, and that’s how we roll…..

Pedant5corner · 21/09/2025 17:32

A hamburger is a meat patty in a bun.
The 'ham' is from 'Hamburg' not pig meat.
i don't know why they are called hamburgers.

Beefburgers are meat patties made from beef.

Everything being Iconic.

Wild swimming - no it’s just swimming (in the sea/river/lake).

rosemole · 21/09/2025 22:31

I can’t bear “I wanna say…”, for example:

How old is he?
I wanna say 38? (Always with an upwards intonation)

Where did this come from?

Pedant5corner · 22/09/2025 10:36

NorthernGirl1975 · 21/09/2025 20:19

And Kate Middleton!

Please provide a link to a video of these.

@gingertomfromnextdoor , and just about any actor being described as a 'national treasure'.

IShouldNotCoco · 23/09/2025 14:26

I hate the way it’s fashionable to reply ‘enjoy’ to everything people say they’re doing today or eating. It’s annoying!!!
