Draw- ring

or

Draw- ing (no R sound before the ING)

It's a pendatometer test

BoysareLikeDogs.....you asked me to report back and so I did!!!!

BoysAreLikeDogs · 25/04/2008 21:51

Sorry

Clairef29 · 25/04/2008 21:51

And I thought I was the only person in the world who was so pedantic about pronounciation!! Definitely draw ing, cos there is no 'r' in it! Unlike boring which does have an 'r'!! Easiest way to explain I think is if you say you draw a picture not drore a picture!
New query thats a huge bugbear with me- the letter H!! Nearly everyone pronounces it "Haitch" however it should be "aitch" as I was taught by my English teacher! Its even in the dictionary spelt that way!! Yes I know, I'm anal!!!

K999 · 25/04/2008 21:54

BoysAreLikeDogs..

I am with you Claire!

That Miss Smilla book which came up in conversation for an entirely different reason recently, fascinated me because the character could pinpoint people to their home village by their accent. I can't remember anything else about the book.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 25/04/2008 21:56

Aitch all the way

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 25/04/2008 21:56

Where I come from they say Haitch. I stubbornly say Aitch. But a five year old called HOlly corrected me the other day. OK. You know. I was big enough not to argue with a child. It was a struggle though.

mummynumber2 · 25/04/2008 22:00

Have to say I completly agree with the 'aich' thing.
I find it quite ironic that people that who insist that it's 'haich' will then talk about going 'ome.

Although it seems I have no leg to stand on as I (honestly) can't pronounce drawing properly.

Clairef29 · 25/04/2008 22:02

Woo hooo!!! I'm not alone!!

ViolentFemme · 25/04/2008 22:08

A west of Scotland peculiarism (if that's a word?) is the pronunciation of "J" - does it rhyme with "I" or "K"?

Clairef29 · 25/04/2008 22:14

J rhymes with K, though Brummies make it sound like it rhymes with I. No offence to any Brummies! I'm not tryin to generalise, its just something I've noticed when I visit my sis who lives in Brum!

ViolentFemme · 25/04/2008 22:20

Most people I know rhyme it with I, whereas in school it was drummed into us that it rhymed with K. Oh and H is aitch!

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 26/04/2008 08:04

Hence the elocution expression "The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain". I used to think, what on earth does that teach?? In my area they don't say Ji, Ki, aye !

jingleyjen · 26/04/2008 09:25

Argh yes... Haitch to me sounds like nails down a blackboard - aitch all the way in this house

SeniorMelly · 26/04/2008 09:30

Oh goody we are still doing this today....which word are we on? [slightly over-excited]

I don't get the haitch one what word is it really?

K99 I think it is because we are Scottish there has never been a R in drawing in Scotland...even drunk its just "drawin" - still no R.

My mother is a Londoner I think she may have a R in her drawing.

[sings to self "maybe it because I'm a Londoner"]

Tnog · 26/04/2008 09:43

I keep saying it over and over in my Dublin accent, but it sounds different each time I say it now.

Tis driving me crackers.

Drawring with a long 'a', I think.

Although sometimes I say drawing

Am I peculiar?

< rhetorical question >

jingleyjen · 26/04/2008 17:52

seniorMelly, the haitch is how to pronounce the letter H - haitch or aitch is the question
