wensday
drawring
grarse

I agree, how can you stop yourself from saying drawring.

RipMacWinkle · 25/04/2008 21:16

Oh definitely draw-ing.

Draw-ring is like nails down a black board for me I'm afraid.

Right up there with sing-ging with the hard g in the middle.

Gives me the jitters

mummynumber2 · 25/04/2008 21:27

I have no idea but DSD1 now thinks I really have lost the plot. She just walked in as I repeated it several times!

mummynumber2 · 25/04/2008 21:30

Having explained to her whay I am infact not completly mad she decided that it should be draw-ring as 'only babies and drunk people would say it the other way.' I have to say I think she has a point.

K999 · 25/04/2008 21:31

It's drawing......????!!!! Why would you prnounce it any other way when it does not have an 'r' in it??

BoysAreLikeDogs · 25/04/2008 21:35

K have you tried saying it out loud ?

Listen v carefully to the sound, then report back

RipMacWinkle · 25/04/2008 21:35

K999 - according to mummynumber2's DSD we must be drunk I wish!

RipMacWinkle · 25/04/2008 21:35

Boys - it's the accent.

YOu just can't get the extra r with a Scots accent I think

mummynumber2 · 25/04/2008 21:35

How do you even say draw-ing? I can honestly say I have never heard anyone pronounce it like that. But I will now listen out for it!

ellingwoman · 25/04/2008 21:37

The 'aw' is pronounced 'or'. Therefore 'draw-ring.

Boring is pronounced bor-ring not bor-ing so why not draw-ring?

mummynumber2 · 25/04/2008 21:38

It's Ok ripmacwinkle, I think she's now fairly sure that I'm the drunk one!

BoysAreLikeDogs · 25/04/2008 21:38

Ahhhh

Regional variants are very interesting (ooh arrr)

K999 · 25/04/2008 21:40

What rubbish! Of course I can say it.....I pronounce it 'drawing'.......its not flippin hard to do......not once have I ever said it so that it sounds like it has an 'r' in it!!

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 25/04/2008 21:41

Because they are spelt differently!

It is a mistake, albeit a very common one to say drawring. It's not a mistake that's made in my neck of the woods though, that's why I notice it. We have plenty of other hideous ways of killing the language.

berolina · 25/04/2008 21:41

the 'r' sounds in draw-ring and 'lore and order' are a so-called "intrusive 'r'" - pretty common, particularly in fast speech, and (IIRC) not specific to a particular region, but considered non-standard.

FWIW, I say 'draw-ing', which if I am speaking very fast sounds a bit like 'droing' to rhyme with 'boing'.

ElizabethBeresfordSW19 · 25/04/2008 21:42

Oh rip! SinGinGue, that is oreful, oreful!!

I'd forgotten about that one.

pointydog · 25/04/2008 21:44

specific to engliosh accents. Would never hear that in a Scot

ViolentFemme · 25/04/2008 21:47

"Drawn"

no ing in west coast slang

BoysAreLikeDogs · 25/04/2008 21:48

K99 - rubbish to you, maybe, but interesting to others.

K999 · 25/04/2008 21:48

Lol Violet!!!
