Pedants' corner

Just so exhausted with the lack of language skills here

Honestly, does anyone else just give up reading posts because the command of language is so poor?
Not talking about people who have English as a second language, because you can read through that.
I feel like such a moaner, but it really does make me feel so sad that people cannot truly communicate in their own language.

MN is probably in the top ten most literate SM sites.

If you don't like it here, don't try the rest f the internet!

I don't give up on people, no. Some of the posters on here have come to ask for help, support and advice when they are in a desperate situation, whether it is impending bereavement, an abusive partner, a sick child, they have just found out they have cancer and don't know where to turn, or whatever else.

I'm not going to judge them on their grammar and punctuation.

I itch to correct people on social media generally but stopped doing it because you don’t know if they’re dyslexic or maybe have a learning difficulty.

Report
Pastachocolate · 15/03/2024 19:32

Personally I don’t as I’m one of those with poor Spag.
At work or for something important I make sure things are correct.

Maybe you’d class that as communicating properly. However I’ve never had anyone not understand me on MN so do think that I can “truly communicate”. I may have communicated most eloquently my pain or upset or joy when some of the grammar was appalling or I just used an emoji.

I appreciate the chance to consider it though and in a non threatening section.
How do you know who has English as second language on MN unless explicitly mentioned?

You just need to have a bit of empathy. Not everyone has the same capacity to learn or have received the same encouragement to learn.

Fast fashion on auto correct.
Sums it up for me. 😉

I have thought the same, however DS(9) is possibly going to be assessed for dyslexia which has given us a new perspective. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to write using correct SPAG, whether that be due to learning issues or lack of education etc.

I was horrified to see the word "gotten" typed in a hospital letter to the GP.

I don’t mind it here, not usually anyway (though some examples are painful). I make a fair few mistakes myself with my fat fingers typing on a tiny mobile screen! When it’s content at work though, in papers to go to the Board, or on our Client facing website / portals, and they are full of mistakes including poor English, dodgy grammar, incorrect words / wrong spelling (eg discrete / discreet), and should have been proofread multiple times, it drives me NUTS! It’s like, we are City lawyers, people expect better than this!

My gran, who would be about 90 now, couldn't really read or write. She left school before compulsory school age.

It's amazing how many people now can read and write well enough to make themselves understood, even if their spelling is a bit wild.

This is Pedants' Corner where such opinions are allowed to be discussed. However, you can guarantee that within a nanosecond someone will be along to self-righteously declare their superior humanity.
It's not AIBU.

Have we had 'language is always evolving' yet?

There was a thread the other day about pronouns and someone complaining about a colleague who wanted to be known as they/them. The op said something about not wanting to call them by ‘there name’ and I was in a bit of a grammatical conundrum - was it an error, or a very clever subversion?

Report
ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2024 20:06

No, but I find hyperbole such as anyone reading MN 'exhausting' rather wearing.

Report
LynetteScavo · 15/03/2024 20:09

It's the reading comprehension of posters that wind me up more than poor spelling and grammar.

OP: My 5yo is covered in spots.
Random poster: How old is your child?

FFS

Incorrect spelling doesn't bother me, But the most use of their/there/they're and your/you're is a bit uncomfortable, and I'm judging the misuse of "of" in place of "have". Even my own DC are guilty of this, even though they know better because I pull them up on it every time Angry

The only thing I really struggle with is when the OP has written an absolutely enormous post and not put any paragraphs in. I find that really difficult to read and tend to give up.

Are you normally so dramatic? It must make life hard if so. I've come across a handful of post in my time here which are incomprehensible. To say you're exhausted by it is a bit much.
