Honestly, does anyone else just give up reading posts because the command of language is so poor?
Not talking about people who have English as a second language, because you can read through that.
I feel like such a moaner, but it really does make me feel so sad that people cannot truly communicate in their own language.

OP posts:
Nonewclothes2024 · 15/03/2024 22:59

I've noticed posters putting ETA when , I think , they mean NB ?

ASighMadeOfStone · 15/03/2024 22:59

TroysMammy · 15/03/2024 22:55

Where did you get that from?

So don't think for one moment I have a second language.

Use of an imperative followed by "for one moment" functionally communicates a negative and/or perjorative opinion.

Examples:

"So, don't think for one moment you're having that last jammy dodger" (you're not)

"So, don't think for one moment I'd ever vote for Lee Anderson" (bleaaaargh)

"So, don't think for one moment I have a second language" ????

gingercringe · 15/03/2024 23:01

Hi OP - non native speaker here and when I'm tired, in a rush or typing on my phone I make atrocious mistakes.

Also the use of commas is different from my language so I struggle with that too.

And I took a dislike to full stops at the end of sentences for some reason and I'm almost dropping capital letters too, pure laziness, I confess.

I'm curios about how can you see through the posts that are created by non native speakers vs by native speakers with poor command of the language - could you please explain? I think knowing that would help me improve a bit.

AutumnCrow · 15/03/2024 23:01

I think we all be forced to write in Latin.

dimllaishebiaith · 15/03/2024 22:56

Doesn't it just!

Don't be so ridiculous. You were the one who smugly told me about Welsh being someone's first language and I told you I knew that being Welsh myself but with English being my only language.

No you read the smugness in the post that was a simple statement of fact, that's on you

But thank you for calling me ridiculous. That's made such a difference to my opinion of you and the point you are making

Is it? I wouldn't know. I don't live in the UK.

Is your comma button not working?

Touché mon frère.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2024 23:12

How do you feel about people using random, and incorrect syntax? Word order of sentences for example?

Well, that might depend on whether it was so that the lyrics of a song scanned and rhymed.Grin
Alternatively, perhaps she should be taken out and hung, for the cold-blooded murder of the English tongue.

Footle · 15/03/2024 23:13

@ASighMadeOfStone , what's perjorativr when it's at home?

Footle · 15/03/2024 23:14

Oops that'll learn me

ErrolTheDragon · 15/03/2024 23:15

Actually it's a Jammie Dodger.

Not if they're home made, apparently. Grin

dreadisabaddog · 15/03/2024 23:29

I know this is Pedants corner but are you not more bothered by the constant Kate conspiracy, CFers, batshit crazy posts?

DickEmery · 15/03/2024 23:52

Actually, I'm more bothered about global warming and I sneer from my lofty height at popinjays who concern themselves with the content of a talkboard.

I have thought the same, however DS(9) is possibly going to be assessed for dyslexia which has given us a new perspective. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to write using correct SPAG, whether that be due to learning issues or lack of education etc.

Same. I have always been such a pedant and will confess I have thought I was better than people who didn't write accurately.

My daughter (10) has recently been diagnosed as severely dyslexic but is very bright (also evidenced by the rest) and full of wise and interesting thoughts. People who judge her or dismiss her based on her written work are missing out on deeply intelligent insights and a funny and witty person.

I look beyond the SPAG now.

When in a hole, stop digging. To get out of said hole, go and watch My Fair Lady, with special reference to Rex Harrison's wonderful performance. Henry Higgins would have been very at home in Pedants' Corner.

FunnyFinch · 16/03/2024 07:06

have you had your thyroid checked OP?
