See also "I am defiantly not pregnant".

I actually learnt on a thread similar to this, that gotten was the older English version which was retained in the US and shortened here.

Yes, 'gotten' was used in the King James Bible, published a good century and a half before the USA existed, so we can't complain about that one!

I want to know where 'alot' came from. It seems so prevalent now - I see 'alot' far more than I see 'a lot' on MN these days.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/01/2023 16:58

Also, the title of the thread is not necessarily incorrect at all:

"Good morning and welcome to our exclusive naturist club. Bare with me and then I will escort you through to the main lounge". Grin

Not sure if this is just me but when people refer to mental health problems or poor mental health they just say mental health. Example; people can't wfh due to mental health or that person has mental health. It's not a full statement. Is it just me?

Yes... 'mental health' with no qualifier should be a good thing.

Lansonmaid · 05/01/2023 17:07

Discusting annoys me a lot.

Also gets me when people confuse birth and berth, the idea of a five birth caravan always makes my mind boggle

VanillaSnap · 05/01/2023 17:20

Moo point instead of moot point.

AmyHayC · 05/01/2023 17:27

"Sorry for your lost", lost what?

TheShellBeach · 05/01/2023 17:37

Alot. Argh.
See also "anymore".
Surely that should be "any more"?

I saw this a few minutes ago:
"I'm a bit battle warn".
Is there nobody capable of writing good English on this site?

Moo point instead of moot point.

Or the dreaded, mute point.

"I turned round and said".

I imagine rooms of people spinning and it makes me feel giddy

I know! I mean, where did that even come from? Are you literally talking behind each others’ backs and have to turn round so you can see each other? Then turn round again?

There is such an overuse of “terrified” eg “I’m terrified he’ll forget to deliver the milk again“

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/01/2023 18:32

Mortified doesn't mean what a lot of people seem to think it does.

Cheeseandabsolutelycrackers · 05/01/2023 20:07

People saying ambivalent when they mean indifferent

What does it mean? We use it a lot in NI to mean highly embarrassed. See also 'scundered'😅

spinachmonster · 05/01/2023 20:36

Off of. I got it off of Facebook marketplace.

For free, though this makes me slightly less angry.

Hardly bring myself to write this...

"My washing machine needs fixed."

😐😑😐🫤

It depends. "Anymore" and "any more" have different meanings.

Mamette · 05/01/2023 20:40

Mortified 🤔

Mortification of the flesh was something out of the Bible wasn’t it? It’s what happens to your body when you die <hazy on RC childhood teachings>

But I think deep embarrassment/ shame is the commonly understood meaning.

What do people think it means?

Mortified means to be embarrassed. There is an older, biblical meaning that is not much in use these days.

FramboiseRoyale · 05/01/2023 20:43

Cross-post with Mamette, who explained it very well.

I have never heard anyone use mortified for anything other than deeply embarrassed.

ortonym · 05/01/2023 20:51

Any manner of variations instead of the correct "obstreperous".
favourites are obstropperous, ogstroculous (!)

It's not just you. When I read about people who say they've 'got mental health' I think 'So what are you bloody whining about?' When DP or I feel a little frustrated or alarmed we now gape our eyes dramatically and say 'I've got the mental health!'

Add "huntch" for hunch.

I saw that one too 😬

Gah. Someone has just mentioned "leak and potato soup".

That sounds most unappetising.
