Just seen viscous circle Grin

Sticky....

This thread has become very mean spirited, reporting back on errors by other users. As @SenecaFallsRedux says, there are many reasons for errors - I know I make many on here that are due to lazy one-handed typing for a start. Many users have commented that threads like this put them off posting for support.

Mamette · 06/01/2023 17:54

I don’t agree that the thread is very mean spirited @JenniferBarkley , some posts are mildly snarky yes, but generally it’s just a nerdy bit of fun for and by people who enjoy words and language, imo.

I have definitely (!) noticed fewer and fewer instances of someone coming on to a thread on. MN and correcting the OP’s spelling or grammar without contributing to the thread topic, and that’s something I used to notice quite often. I think it has become pretty unacceptable to do that now, which is good.

This is Pedants’ corner though! 🤷‍♀️

ErrolTheDragon · 06/01/2023 18:10

Yes, being snarky about SPAG on a thread is generally mean. It's often possible to either ignore or reply modelling correct usage - the latter is sometimes appreciated.

SenecaFallsRedux · 06/01/2023 19:28

I still see people correcting on threads. I think it's happening even more lately. It's really a nasty and unkind thing to do.

Also Pedants' corner used to be a place where people discussed language and asked for advice on usage without a lot of snark. That has obviously changed with threads like this one where people are making fun of mistakes. For those of us who have raised children with learning challenges, seeing even one "Bahahahahahaha" for a relatively mild mistake is offensive.

I don't understand "noowkiller'.

I think that's a transliteration of how a lot of people mispronounce 'nuclear'. I don't understand it - afaik people don't have the same problem with 'nucleus'.

yes-nuclear 😂

“You did brilliant.”

”He did amazing”

Makes my teeth ache every time.

I wrote “did” btw because my fingers refused to write “done”.

Howling!!!!!!🤓

Of course it's mean spirited. How do you think someone would feel to post a thread asking for advice and then find people on another thread slagging them off for using whose instead of who's, or saying ooh.

Pedantry doesn't have to equal dickishness, as Seneca says. There are loads of interesting discussions in this section about language but this isn't one of them.

I doubt that very much .
Can you give examples?

I have raised a child with learning challenges myself. My very excellent DH is dyslexic.
I, myself, am autistic.
I refrain from correcting errors on people's threads.
Pedants' Corner amuses me greatly.
I am going to ignore you now.
Defiantly.

I haven’t seen anyone doing what you’re describing, @JenniferBarkley

You should report the posts you think are slagging people off.

I don’t agree the thread is mean spirited.

You’re the one calling people dicks. I don’t really know what to tell you.

JenniferBarkley · 06/01/2023 21:13

"Just seen a new one on another thread : a "loan" parent!"

And:

Send help. Someone has started a thread with the title
"How do I find out who's number this is"
It cost me a good deal to type that, I can assure you.

I almost answered her with the remark "Don't you mean "WHOSE"? but I managed to restrain myself.

That poster was mentioned several times.

And:

I saw this a few minutes ago:
"I'm a bit battle warn".
Is there nobody capable of writing good English on this site?

And:

Add "huntch" for hunch.

I saw that one too 😬

And:

Gah. Someone has just mentioned "leak and potato soup".

And:

I saw “sez” yesterday on here. Much more rock and roll than dull old, says. 😐

And:

Just seen viscous circle Grin

Viscous circle bahahahahahahahaha

A number of these are OP's.

Multiple posts of people reading threads and then scuttling off to snigger at others' SPAG like mean girls. Dickish.

SenecaFallsRedux · 06/01/2023 21:14

I think some of the thread is mean-spirited in that it is making fun of (admittedly unnamed) people. No one makes SPAG mistakes intentionally, unless in a jokey way; these types of mistakes are seldom the person's fault.

And I think posters can be put off from asking for help in other sections of MN when they see threads like this one.

Mamette · 06/01/2023 21:17

@JenniferBarkley I saw the huntch one, but if you actually read the thread that comes from you will find your assessment of the situation is entirely wrong.

Didn’t notice the others, I tend to skim rather than look for things to get worked up about.

CleanBedding · 06/01/2023 21:20

I have noticed people on Mumsnet using quotation marks incorrectly ie failing to understand that they should only contain direct speech. For example they will say 'She turned around and said ''she was really cross with me for borrowing her penis beaker and was I on glue'' so I cancelled the cheque'

It's hard to explain and I don't understand why people do it but I've seen it a few times.

Mamette · 06/01/2023 21:20

I agree that going off and specifically looking for fodder is pretty low. I don’t think that’s been the general trend of the thread though.

SenecaFallsRedux · 06/01/2023 21:38

To discuss why certain mistakes are made is one thing. For example, when someone writes "draws" for "drawers," we know that usually comes from non-rhotic speakers who are writing as they pronounce. That's interesting to me as a rhotic speaker who hears two different words when they are spoken. But what is the point of making fun of it?

I also think more mistakes are being made these days from use of speech to text. My accent sometimes produces some pretty strange results when I try to use speech to text.

Clevs · 06/01/2023 21:39

There's a cupboard advertised on Marketplace near me and it's listed as a 'covered'. Not just in the title but the description as well so can't be a typo.

No poster has been named on this thread.

You claimed that people write on various threads about being put off MN because of Pedants' Corner. I asked for examples of this and so far you haven't provided any.

Because MN search function is crap and I can't be arsed to google. I've been here over a decade, seen it many's a time. Not like there's an easy term to search to confirm.

Any of the posters slagged off would recognise themselves.
