Possibly my most rage inducing Mumsnet phrase. Also very prevalent on FB. Have to sit on my hands so as not to correct people I know. Any takers or do I need to calm down?

Have some corn beef and calm down.

upinaballoon · 22/10/2022 22:53

Corn beef / cornbeef / ice tea

We use to live in Wyoming.

On a general thread, a few months ago, these sorts of words must have been under discussion, or maybe it was about the words which irritate. I said that I'd seen 'Corn beef' and 'Ice tea' in Sainsbury's and that I see it as a laziness not to put the 'ed/d' there. I was accused of being racist.

I used to correspond with an American lady who was well able to write a grammatical letter but she would write 'use to'.

Without shrieking about it I still see it as basically incorrect and lazy.

Now, when it comes to ice cream, it did start off as being cream which was iced..............................

I’ll see your pack lunch and raise you should of, would of and could of.with a side order of “less xxx” when it should be FEWER.

Rage inducing.

Wooltongirl · 22/10/2022 23:02

Reach out is my trigger. What’s wrong with contact or ring???

America12 · 22/10/2022 23:02

'Bare with me '. Are we all getting undressed?

JamesGetIn · 22/10/2022 23:05

Today I witnessed "must've met" (must admit) and "right away" (right of way).

Ridiculous.

DoodlePug · 22/10/2022 23:06

Al instead of I'll, both written (texts) and spoken. If I hadn't seen the written version first I'd have thought it was a regional accent.

Puffalicious · 22/10/2022 23:07

I'm in Scotland and it's common to have a 'pack' lunch or have 'slep in'. Many also refer to people in plurality as youse/ yous/ use, as in 'Are youse going to the park?'

Both absolutely infuriating and I need to silently scream (let's not get into the erosion of adverbs or I may KILL someone ).

AdaColeman · 22/10/2022 23:15

You are quite right @beautifuldaytosavelives as any fule kno they should be calling it bait or snap not pack lunch.

You need to calm down. MacDonalds is most rage inducing atm.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 22/10/2022 23:20

Ah, I knew my pedantic sisters would have been wincing with me at “right away” today.

OhamIreally · 22/10/2022 23:29

That "right away" woman I'm sure was just trolling the pedants. She acquiesced too easily when corrected.

When I was still involved with Brownies a colleague sent out a note telling all parents that a pack tea would be required for the first day of camp. I resisted the urge to correct her.
One girl brought a box of teabags.

Baystard · 23/10/2022 08:38

I see your pack lunch OP and I raise you...

...box set.

paulmccartneysbagel · 23/10/2022 08:43

My parents and their generation call it 'pack up' where I'm from! 🤯

AgentProvocateur · 23/10/2022 08:43

@Puffalicious I’m also from Scotland but not living there now, and I often think how useful ‘yous’ was and how there needs to be a formal way to make it clear you’re taking to more than one colleague.

Maltester71 · 23/10/2022 08:46

I used to live in Australia. Heard ‘chaise longue’ pronounced ‘ chayze lounge.’

still not over it fifteen years later

CuriousCatfish · 23/10/2022 08:47

I call it a pack up.

My inlaws call it that too, I'd never heard of it before

CuriousCatfish · 23/10/2022 08:56

Funny how we don't all talk the same. I can't get worked up about regional dialects. Im fact I quite like them.

GinasGirl · 23/10/2022 08:58

I call it a pack up too @paulmccartneysbagel

MagpiePi · 23/10/2022 09:00

i think these examples are all very communal garden, aren't there any a bit more interesting.

But you'll split an infinitive...
