Possibly my most rage inducing Mumsnet phrase. Also very prevalent on FB. Have to sit on my hands so as not to correct people I know. Any takers or do I need to calm down?

You aren't wrong, @CaptainMyCaptain , but aren't all bookings made in advance?

True. It could just say 'Bookings only'.

Ducktape! It's duct-tape!

Ducktape! It's duct-tape!

Duck tape is a brand.

Chester draws instead f chest of drawers. On a sign. Why does this city draw people in or who is he/she and how good are they?🤣

EnyoClytemnestra · 18/12/2022 08:15

yes, @CaptainMyCaptain the brand has played on the fact that people have mispronounced it, which is very enterprising, but means that more people think that this type of tape was always called duck, rather than what it was originally designed for. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duct_tape

My parents and their generation call it 'pack up' where I'm from! 🤯

My ExH says pack up, he's Northern. I absolutely hate it, it's completely irrational I know!

AlwaysLatte · 18/12/2022 08:19

communal garden
🤣

It was in a previous post, instead of common or garden.

Maybe so, but calling it Duck Tape is no worse than calling adhesive tape Sellotape or a vacuum cleaner a Hoover because Duck Tape actually exists..

Where I live people call it a Pack Up.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/12/2022 08:54

or Snap.

AlwaysLatte · 18/12/2022 09:15

"bathroom" instead of toilet 😡
I say 'bathroom' as it's a room with a bath in (although I do say 'shower room' for the ones with no bath).

AlwaysLatte · 18/12/2022 09:18

@NoNameNowAgain

Communal garden made me laugh because it's 'common or garden'

That was in October! And I’m getting old.

Read the link ...'duck tape' was in use many decades before 'duct tape'. The original name derives from the 'duck cotton' backing of the original tape.

EnyoClytemnestra · 18/12/2022 14:26

@ErrolTheDragon @CaptainMyCaptain Gladly accept that I am wrong on this one. Off to the corner of fools!

ErrolTheDragon · 18/12/2022 15:03

You're not wrong that it's generally 'duct tape' now, because it makes more sense than a reference to a type of fabric probably no-one has heard of now! This is a case of a logical shift in a name.
But, this being pedants' corner, I was obliged to be pedantic.Grin

Where I live people call it a Pack Up.

In Cornwall we call it "crib".
I'm glad there is a current thread for me to vent about reading on FB someone having to clean their dog's poors. It has been popping into my head all day so perhaps I can just leave it here and get on with my life.

TallulahBetty · 19/12/2022 13:27

Found another on a current thread: 'Terrace house'.

TERRACED. It's terraced.
