Possibly my most rage inducing Mumsnet phrase. Also very prevalent on FB. Have to sit on my hands so as not to correct people I know. Any takers or do I need to calm down?

OP posts:

Only thing worse than 'mash potato' is when it is served with 'veg'. Just ... 'veg'.

'Veggies' is worse.

Going against the grain here but...

And they never are anyway.

There will be numerous previous posts giving the same opinion as 'going against the grain' poster so it's annoying and futile.

How do people feel about taxis bearing the slogan 'Advanced bookings only'? I think it should be 'Advance bookings' as in 'bookings made in advance' but I could be wrong.

PedantScorner · 16/12/2022 12:02

You aren't wrong, @CaptainMyCaptain , but aren't all bookings made in advance?

RuthW · 16/12/2022 12:09

I stop reading a post as soon as I see 'gotten'.

I hope you don't work with Americans.

But you'll split an infinitive...

That's only a "rule" because you can't do it in Latin (or any other language that has one-word infinitives).

They any could word order also use, mean the same because it would.

Basing English sentence structure on Latin doesn't really work...

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 13:14

I'll boldly go and split any infinitive I want to!

'Pack lunch' drives me mad.

See also: 'drop kerb'; 'He's really chill'

Drop curb is worse!!

lightand · 16/12/2022 13:56

Dont think anyone has mentioned the lose loose yet?
I see still that as many times as the rest of the words on here put together.

But I remain calm about it[mainly].
English is not the first language for lots of people, and some of them learn english far better than I can a second language.

TheShellBeach · 16/12/2022 14:04

I always wonder why nobody on MN has a job.

They all seem to have "roles" and it annoys the fuck out of me.

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/12/2022 14:12

Then there is the language so beloved of style magazines
People (especially women) don't just wear things, they "don" them or "rock" them, as in
"she rocked a smoky eye" - just the one dear?
See also the singular lip (a red lip completed the look)
And singular "trouser" and "pant"

Gives me the RAGE

<Bore was rocking a red mist on Mumsnet>

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/12/2022 14:13

Formatting gone to pot there Xmas Blush

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 14:32

Someone surely must have made a cartoon or meme featuring a model 'rocking' those singular items.

PedantScorner · 16/12/2022 14:33

@AutumnCrow , it is used on here instead of 'going against the flow', and as you pointed out, they usually aren't.

Going against the grain is when you do something like vote tory despite being a lifelong socialist.

@lightand, in the workplace, the people who have learnt English as a second language usually have better English than the english. On social media, some of the posts are barely legible because people have learnt English through immersion.

On a recent SM thread, my serious reply was met with a 'PedantScorner, are you joke?'. Did she think I was a joke or that I was joking?

ErrolTheDragon · 16/12/2022 14:38

I like that distinction, but the use of 'against the grain' to mean essentially the same as 'against the flow' seems to be supported by various dictionaries now.

icegoose · 16/12/2022 14:39

I've only ever used " pack lunch" at nearly 5 decades I'm probably not going to change. It had never crossed my mind until today that it should be something else.
Although the other phrase I've used is "pack up" so I'm team "pack" all the way.

You'd think so wouldn't you, Errol?

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 16/12/2022 14:43

Curated instead of made

PedantScorner · 16/12/2022 14:44

@ErrolTheDragon , I doubt it.

That’s a pity.
I have also noticed that ‘aghast’ seems to have been entirely replaced by ‘agog’ on Mumsnet. I suppose it’s easier to spell.

PedantScorner · 16/12/2022 14:59

@NoNameNowAgain , but they have different meanings.
If you are all agog, you're excited. If you are aghast, you are appalled.
