I'm so sick of seeing this, there's not a cool mum click, it's a clique, and they're not clicky (well if their joints are anything like mine they might be) they're cliquey! and breathe

’Revert back’.

Revert means back, so you’re saying back back. Just say ‘revert to’.

SandieCollins · 30/08/2022 07:06

Oh yes! It makes my teeth itch

@SandieCollins I love this 😂 I know precisely what you mean.

Underthehills · 24/09/2022 23:49

Pinkywoo · 30/08/2022 07:07

Glad it's not just me, I don't know about other accents but to me they're not even pronounced the same.

@Pinkywoo of course they’re not pronounced the same. The very idea they might be makes me twitch 🤣

JennyForeigner · 30/08/2022 07:39

Oh thank God. OP: this thread is the Lord's work.

@JennyForeigner yes! I feel I’ve found my spiritual home 😂

stickybear · 24/09/2022 23:59

Can I moan here about people saying e.g. 'ten year anniversary' instead of 'tenth anniversary'. Drives me mad.

lickenchugget · 25/09/2022 03:11

Fluxcapacitator · 30/08/2022 07:07

It is click not clique these days as more people get it wrong than right. It is a word that has evolved.

That’s not how English works.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 25/09/2022 09:13

Agree. It's so irritating.

Careful OP someone will be along to tell you border and boarder don’t sound anything alike!

Border and boarder don't sound anything alike in any accent I've ever heard. Are there accents where they do sound alike? I could never fathom how people used the wrong one on here.

On the other, clique/click and rein/reign sound the same to me.

Chewbecca · 25/09/2022 09:54

Essex / London here and border and boarder are pronounced exactly the same.

I grew up in Somerset and now in Home Counties - boarder and border sound exactly the same - baw-duh sort of thing. Not sure how they could sound different, can’t be to do with rhotic/non rhotic as they have the same amount of Rs and you’re not going to be rhotic for one and not for the other. Do you pronounce the -oa digraph and -o differently then?

MassiveSalad22 · 25/09/2022 10:22

Please enlighten as am walking around the house saying ‘boarder’ in various accents driving myself mad 😄

eveoha · 25/09/2022 10:24

Hello all share your pain re misuse of click / clique as many ‘cliques’ are actually ‘claques’ 👍🏿☘️

Yes @MassiveSalad22
I'm in Scotland and border is pronounced with aw sound as in 'awful'.
Boarder pronounced with o sound as in 'no'

Yep, in my accent (south east with a northern mother!) boarder/border and rein/reign/rain sound the same, but clique is pronounced cleek rather than click.

I have an east midlands accent and both parents are from the south east. Boarder border sound the same. Rain rein reign are all the same. Clique and click are completely different. “Cleek and click”

Worriedaboutethics · 25/09/2022 13:17

@Pinkywoo

click is the American version.
you are saying the correct way for English!

Rein and reign sound the same for me.

Having spent 10 minutes saying clique and click, I realised they don't actually sound the same when I say them. I do say something a bit more like cleeck, so not quite cleek but not click either.

waterlego · 25/09/2022 16:13

Border and boarder don't sound anything alike in any accent I've ever heard.

That can only be true if you’ve never heard any accents from London or Sussex/Hampshire/Berkshire/Essex/Hertfordshire/Kent! In the vast majority of SE accents, border and boarder sound exactly the same. Much as bored and board sound the same in SE accents.

Plus every midlands accent. In fact I suspect pretty much all English and welsh accents

I've certainly heard some of those accents but we've obviously never discussed either borders or boarders.

Well, definitely not boarders, although I would have thought borders might have come up.

They sound the same to me too but boarder and border sound completely different.

waterlego · 25/09/2022 18:28

Interesting. What is your accent @OchonAgusOchonOh? I’m finding it hard to imagine how can boarder and border can sound different! (I mean, I believe you, I just can’t imagine it).

MassiveSalad22 · 25/09/2022 18:57

Same @waterlego I’m no clearer 😄 MN needs an audio record function!

I'm Irish.

I have to care about this stuff, as it's a large part of my job, but it's getting harder to fight the tide.

I also know that language changes for ease of use etc, etc. But the curious thing about sm needing more people to be literate, is that it just seems to amplify the mistakes alot.😉

I feel like I'm the odd one out at work as I see so much "your" instead of "you're", "should of" and the other examples already written. It makes me feel old and alone for wanting it to be written correctly.
