I'm so sick of seeing this, there's not a cool mum click, it's a clique, and they're not clicky (well if their joints are anything like mine they might be) they're cliquey! and breathe

OP posts:

And, then again, some of us have been on PC for about 20 years, and remember fondly when it was used by intelligent posters who liked to discuss language quirks. Sadly, after the Mumsnet demographic changed about 10 years ago, it became more of a "point and laugh at the thicko" corner.

It’s nothing to do with ‘laughing at the thicko’! It’s more a case of being irritated that so many people cba to learn a few rules of grammar and spelling because they don’t think it matters. Whether it does matter or not is another debate, but by and large, I don’t think there is a lot of pointing and laughing in PC.

Paslaptis · 30/08/2022 11:26

I'm going to hell for this, but there's a post right now on AIBU about commonly suggested energy cost savings being "false economy", and the OP goes on and on about the limitations of an "air friar".

watcherintherye · 30/08/2022 11:51

Yes, lots of air friars about atm. Always makes me think of this ad!

I put that one down to autocarrot.

If 95% of English speakers use click not clique, is it still wrong? I would give up the fight on this one.

Yes, it's still wrong, like all the thick trendy buggers with degrees saying, "There's ten examples here."

Ouch. Intelligent posters.

My commiserations; it's so tiresome, innit?

@Dilbertian and @Paslaptis - I’m not sure which of these made me laugh the most - they’re both great! Thank you (leaves to find the air fryer thread…)

I often spot people meaning discreet but using the word discrete. Also see phased, when they mean fazed.

Thank you! I was writing a post and I typed phased.... and I KNEW I was using the wrong word, but fased looked worse. ... I didn't have time to google and just used a synonym and forgot about it.

I blame the menopause!

JimJamJollyWolly · 30/08/2022 17:16

It's nice to have fazed back...

I used to love words, now I forget the word for steam.... "that wispy air from the kettle!" aarrgghh!

LittleBearPad · 30/08/2022 20:47

My favourite is elicit and illicit. Usually illicit is used when elicit would be far more appropriate but no one likes to mention it…

Have just seen 'convosation' written twice in one post.

I assume due to 'convo' being so popular nowadays

Dadaya · 06/09/2022 11:12

I’ve just seen someone write “passify” 😂

Dannexe · 06/09/2022 11:20

I saw “prolly” earlier instead of probably. I had to read it a few times before I understood.

Chewbecca · 06/09/2022 11:32

I don’t think prolly is an error actually, I think it’s more akin to writing gonna or convo. I see it in text chats by people who can definitely spell!

BanditBluey · 06/09/2022 12:07

"I brought some new trousers today"
..........brought them where?!? Do you mean you BOUGHT them 😑

Mumofnowgrownkids · 06/09/2022 12:31

My pet hate is "different to" or, even worse, "different than". It's different FROM, and always should be!!!!

Novum · 06/09/2022 22:52

"His" instead of "he's" or "he is". People seem to manage perfectly fine with "she's" or "she is", why on earth would it be different for men?

waterlego · 07/09/2022 13:20

@Novum, I’m not sure I’ve seen that, but I have seen the opposite. E.g. ‘Bob is really pleased with he’s new bike’ 😫

Summertimesunshineandfizz · 30/08/2022 09:30

Unfortunately, most of the examples cited do not reflect language evolving but rather literacy declining.

Brilliant. I'm going to use that phrase going forward

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 11/09/2022 09:13

downtonupton · 30/08/2022 08:53

an apostrophe on anything that ends with s or is plural
que instead of queue
his instead of he's

Been instead of being drives me bananas.

upinaballoon · 11/09/2022 11:08

I can't tell whether people really don't know or whether they dash off posts without noticing that predictive text has changed what they first meant to write. I long to re-write many a post!

Sistanotcista · 11/09/2022 18:02

“Hence why” - just say “hence”!
