It's clique not click!

I'm so sick of seeing this, there's not a cool mum click, it's a clique, and they're not clicky (well if their joints are anything like mine they might be) they're cliquey! and breathe

What makes me rage is when people say it doesn’t matter. That we should know what they mean.

If you spelt it correctly then we would!

AquaticSewingMachine · 30/08/2022 07:43

It's not bloody "click" now. That doesn't even make any fucking sense.

It's also practically guaranteed to be used by someone who declares any group of friends that they don't happen to be a part of, probably because they have never engaged in conversation or even introduced themselves, a "'click".

"Free reign" also gets me, although I at least see where they are coming from on that one.

It is click not clique these days as more people get it wrong than right. It is a word that has evolved.

NO! It is NOT click. Just because many people get it wrong doesn't instantly mean the word has now changed.

Lemonblossom · 30/08/2022 07:43

KatherineofGaunt · 30/08/2022 07:38

Yes, just read a thread about a mum 'click'. But you can't say anything, even just in a nice, helpful way, because people say you're being mean! So nobody gets to learn from their mistakes anymore and we end up with draw instead of drawer and whatnot.

Yes this is a problem. Point out the error and you’ll be attacked.

I always correct DC. Ds1 poor thing gets corrected frequently since he reads a lot and tries to use words he has only ever seen written down. I feel a bit mean doing it but how are people supposed to learn?

crabcakesalad · 30/08/2022 07:43

and pique not peak, drives me mad 😠

Whilst we're on it - it's could HAVE, not could of 😖

olympicsrock · 30/08/2022 07:44

It is not evolving. Stupid people are just trying to use and misspell more often.

AquaticSewingMachine · 30/08/2022 07:45

@Lemonblossom I had a uni tutor who, when I mispronounced "Cowper", corrected me and then gravely complimented me, saying that knowing words you had never heard spoken was a sign of having read widely. 😉

Looked at a house on Rightmove yesterday which was described as having ‘mature boarders’. Not very enticing. Should be under for investors only.
I wonder how much of this is due to auto correct that the poster assumes is right.
It’s autocorrect gone mad!

My iPhone cannot cope with the word ill and constantly corrects it to I’ll. Very annoying

CollywobbleisCreepy · 30/08/2022 07:46

Agree. “Click” makes zero sense in this context. Thank you for raising it, thought I was the only one.

Pinkywoo · 30/08/2022 07:49

Fluxcapacitator · 30/08/2022 07:43

If 95% of English speakers use click not clique, is it still wrong? I would give up the fight on this one.

Never!

@Newuser82

A parent in the childminders group chat announced yesterday that her child has 'poohed on the potty for the first time.'

It took every ounce of my being not to correct her as everybody else was sending their well done messages.

BeautifulWar · 30/08/2022 07:50

Yes, just read a thread about a mum 'click'.

Maybe it's like West Side Story and the mum clique stand around, aggressively clicking their fingers at the outsiders?

Surely regardless of spelling that’s just too much information!

Oh, yes. The ‘boarders’ instead of ‘borders’ drives me nuts.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 30/08/2022 07:57

Another one is isle/aisle

I have a feeling that this is going to be the best thing I read today

SierraSapphire · 30/08/2022 08:01

Choritzo seems to be the common pronunciation of chorizo too. Even by people I've corrected many times Grin.

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 30/08/2022 08:03

“I was wondering around the house “.
I usually wander around.

Reminds me of a carol we sang at school - I wonder as I wander

Maybe they are doing both Grin

Oh thank God. OP: this thread is the Lord's work.

Indeed! I suspect @Pinkywoo has been reading the home schooling thread. I gave up on page 2 as the “clicky mums” references were driving insane! Might try it again now and just imagine the joints of all these cool young mums clicking!

Fairislefandango · 30/08/2022 08:07

No way is it anything approaching 95%! For every person who actually mentions 'clicks' on social media, there will be umpteen people going about their lives knowing perfectly well that it's 'cliques' <hopeful>.

Berlinlover · 30/08/2022 08:08

Loose instead of lose drives me insane. I also had to stop reading the “clicky” thread.

Dilbertian · 30/08/2022 08:09

And when people going swimming get changed in a cubical, is that simply another demonstration of the evolution of language?

It would make more sense to spell clique cleek, but people recognise that cleek is not a word in English, even though it follows all our spelling rules. Instead they take a very similar word and change its pronunciation.
