To not understand why people write "carnt"?

And why it's not understood that it's not a word as such but a contraction of "cannot"? I see it such a lot.

I see it alot to.

Bluetowelsandflannels · 01/04/2022 23:55

I've never seen it; only "can't" as an abbreviation.

HulaTheHedgehog · 01/04/2022 23:56

I don't no why people do this.

FloralsForSpring · 01/04/2022 23:56

I've never seen this

HellToTheNope · 01/04/2022 23:56

Carnt?

Is this a joke? Also, a lot, not alot. Alot is not a word.

Orangutanteddy · 01/04/2022 23:56

Well, I don't understand why people write 'would of' instead of 'would have' but I guess we've all got our crosses to bear.

NewBootsAndRanty · 01/04/2022 23:57

@HulaTheHedgehog

I don't no why people do this.

It shouldn't be aloud.
argbooker · 01/04/2022 23:57

Never in my life have a seen anyone write or use the word 'carnt'

TheSmallAssassin · 01/04/2022 23:57

Isn't it obvious that "carnt" is the phonetic spelling for a lot of accents? I assume people are just writing what they hear/say.

SisterGabriel · 01/04/2022 23:57

Lol @Zazdar

Chloemol · 01/04/2022 23:58

Never seen it

HomeprideSaucy · 01/04/2022 23:58

Your not being unreasonable Grin

StScholastica · 01/04/2022 23:59

I've seen it quite a bit, it's a Stoke thing.

@TheSmallAssassin

I think that's right, but is the understanding of what they're actually saying, eg "you cannot be serious" lacking?

The person who wrote it is not a kid, she's around 50.

Wingedharpy · 02/04/2022 00:06

Some people carnt spell.
I carnt spell some words eether.

Mintymilk · 02/04/2022 00:09

You don’t understand dyslexia, people who struggle with reading and writing, people who get confused over spelling and grammar sometimes and many other scenarios I can’t think of off the top of my head?

You know what the person is trying to say, so it hardly matters does it, it’s just being mean for no reason, good or gain.

Meh2020 · 02/04/2022 00:15

At this point I think you are being unreasonable.

There could be many reasons why she is spelling it as it sounds.

What are the circumstances?

DysmalRadius · 02/04/2022 00:18

So it's one person that you know? Why not ask her?

OnaBegonia · 02/04/2022 00:21

Maybe she carn't brought some new draws, all annoying 🙄

Buttercup54321 · 02/04/2022 00:26

Where I live lots of people write carnt.
They also write draw for drawer.

Smoothsoul · 02/04/2022 00:32

All of the above examples I see a lot. I’ve been really overly annoyed with carnt as I’ve seen it a lot. I think I need to see dr as I think I may be peri menopausal and am itching to comment on posts I see but I know I shouldn’t as it’s mean.
I agree with PP as I think it’s the spelling of a regional accent somewhere.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 02/04/2022 00:33

I see it a lot as well @ImJustMadAboutSaffron. Are you in the NW at all?

I see this and the use of 'where' instead of 'were' which is how it sounds in the local accent.

It's ridiculous though. It's can and cannot. I doubt Ian Beale spells the word The as Vu just because he pronounces it like that!

@Mintymilk some people are dyslexic and some people aren't. The three people in my home can spell the word can't without an R but might spell while as 'why'll'.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 02/04/2022 00:35

@StScholastica

I've seen it quite a bit, it's a Stoke thing.

Is it? That's how we say it but I've never seen it written like that
Eloise666 · 02/04/2022 00:35

I voted yabu only because I’ve never seen a spelling like that. It’s ridiculous because it’s actually longer to write than can’t, so not only inaccurate and wrong, but also harder.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 02/04/2022 00:37

@DysmalRadius

So it's one person that you know? Why not ask her?

It's nobody I know. It's someone who's written it on a friend's Facebook page so of course I'm not going to point it out. I've seen it many times before, however.
