To not understand why people write "carnt"?

And why it's not understood that it's not a word as such but a contraction of "cannot"? I see it such a lot.

Never seen it!

But although I'm in Ireland where we pronounce Rs, I can understand why people who don't pronounce their Rs and don't have great spelling might make this mistake. I saw paty once for Party! and Supprise for Surprise.

I actually quite like when you can pick up clues about somebody's accent from a mistake. Feels like a clue!

@Thoosa

Here here!

(When I see that I'm tempted to ask "where where?" !!!)

Since you want a dickish thread, sneering about spelling, OP, I will allow myself to point out that the phrase is “Hear hear”.

Why did you get that wrong?

I didn't get it wrong.

I know it is hear hear. When people write here here, I am tempted to ask where where ... think about it.

People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, @ImJustMadAboutSaffron. None of us are perfect.

Jane Austen, Shakespeare and their ilk... if they were on MN, posting in their vernacular, you'd say they couldn't spell.

But I'm fairly sure they had a better grasp of English than any of us.

Oh dear. It really didn’t look like that in context. It looked like you couldn’t spell. WHY did you spell it wrongly?

Is there a difference between you spelling things completely wrongly and then saying it was a joke and other people perhaps spelling things wrongly because they’re dyslexic or had a poor education?

Is it that you’re just better than them?

Some people struggle with spelling for a variety of reasons. My DS has dyslexia and he said once that the only way he can spell is through muscle memory. I used to be great at spelling but as I am getting older it isn’t coming as naturally as it used to.

Jane Austen is a really interesting example. Lots of things she wrote would perhaps be on the same lines as this. She wrote chuse instead of choose and I think she used a Z instead of S, rather like American spellings. I think we now tend to think of that as of the times, rather than spelling mistakes, maybe?

Love and Freindship (original spelling) would be pilloried on here.

Yes of course there is, as you no doubt know. Lots of others have posted on this thread with incorrect spellings as a joke, if you read them.

Is it that you’re just better than them?

She was very young when she wrote that, wasn't she?

SquirrelG · 02/04/2022 02:10

I have literally never seen it written that way until now - and I've been around for over 60 years!

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 02/04/2022 02:15

Draw gets used for drawer as well very frequently.

OP posts:
Notarealmum · 02/04/2022 02:18

I’ve never seen it spelt that way either, but can understand why people might as it’s just a phonetic spelling of can’t and not everyone understands the whole apostrophe business.

It makes me cringe sometimes and I have tried to read posts I genuinely cannot understand.

But you can't understand why people may do this? I think that shows a significant lack of imagination on your part OP!

Lots of people write as they hear words, because they don't read much or what they do read is texts/posts written by people who also aren't great at literacy.

Can't sounds like 'carn't' in some accents.

Where and were sound the same in some (yup, go to North Manchester, they both sound like 'wurr' - 'wurrs the milk' 'we wurr goin' to see wurr t'murder 'appened'.. etc.

It's the same reason you see people write 'spag bowl' or 'chester draws' - if you've never seen it written down correctly, or spoken without a thick accent - you might well write it that way.

On a regular basis I see 'we was' and 'should of' and 'ano' (I know) and as it works for people, there's no reason for them to change that, no one changes behaviour that works!

Im2022 · 02/04/2022 05:21

I actually wrote “carn’t” on a stolen car thread yesterday as a pun, but no one got it. Maybe they thought I woz been thick. 🤔

lemmein · 02/04/2022 05:35

I see it all the time on my local FB (NE)

Also, 'discusting'
