To not understand why people write "carnt"?

And why it's not understood that it's not a word as such but a contraction of "cannot"? I see it such a lot.

@Itstheprinciple

Where, were, wear are all homophones and are taught as such in schools.
Since when were "where" and "were" homophones?!
Ikeatears · 02/04/2022 11:22

@ImJustMadAboutSaffron haha, fair enough, you're right, it's not about necklaces😂 I suppose another reason could typos or autocorrect then! Or even posting after too much wine BlushGrin
I think most people without a learning disability or a low level of education know that carnt is incorrect.
I've taught adults with low levels of literacy (believe it or not, based on my last postConfused) and seen first hand, the levels of frustration, embarrassment and low self esteem that literacy issues can cause so I suppose it hits a nerve.

@PAFMO

Yes you're correct. I was not sitting in the Drawing Room I was, in fact, hanging upside down. Me, being a bat. 🦇

Hilarious. Truly. So, you have form for taking the piss out of people's English on social media?[/quote]
What, like you did upthread with @TwoLeftSocksWithHoles when you corrected their grammar?

@ImJustMadAboutSaffron

It's open season on MN to correct the grammar of someone making a mistake when they've corrected someone else's or are being arrogant about their own SpaG. Didn't you know? Of course, it's the only time it is acceptable, and it's such fun because it's a truth universally acknowledged, that anyone correcting anyone else will make a mistake. It's the law of Muphry. With a pinch of Dunning-Kruger to spice things up.

@Marynotsocontrary, yep. Me usually. Grin

For those genuinely interested in the nuances of English there are some great threads from a few years back. Then it all got rather "point and laugh" which is tedious.

How is it difficult to understand that perhaps some people are not as well educated as you? I hate these threads, smug snobbery under the pretence of lack of understanding. Bore off.

Afternoon, everyone. We're going to move this over to Pedants' Corner, where we think it might sit a little better.

With my accent I use a short a usually, so I don't talk about a barth or the parst or a caffe lartay. I say bath, past, latte.
I have taught that 'can not' and 'cannot' can be shortened by leaving out the 'n' and the 'o', in which case we put an apostrophe instead, giving 'can't'. Are apostrophes taught now? Was there ever a gap in the teaching of apostrophes?
When I speak the word 'can't' it sounds like 'carnt', in spite of my short 'a', because cant is something completely different.

I believe that people spell CARNT instead of CAN'T because their car is out of fuel.... Hmmms 🤔

OldWivesTale · 17/07/2025 19:39

Because they are sounding it out phonetically. I'd have thought that was obvious.

Not seen this to be honest

HellToTheNope · 01/04/2022 23:56

Carnt?

Is this a joke? Also, a lot, not alot. Alot is not a word.

Easy to see why people think alot is a word. But carnt is horrendous

It is all too obvious, but on the other hand... maybe they need to learn to spell.

OldWomanInACardigan · 10/08/2025 17:09

I've got a friend who does that. She also confuses "Their", "They're" and "There". Even worse, so does the same with "To", "Too" and "Too" and "No" and "Know". Shocking, for a 67-year-old.

mathanxiety · 10/08/2025 23:07

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 02/04/2022 00:01

@TheSmallAssassin

Isn't it obvious that "carnt" is the phonetic spelling for a lot of accents? I assume people are just writing what they hear/say.
I think that's right, but is the understanding of what they're actually saying, eg "you cannot be serious" lacking?

The person who wrote it is not a kid, she's around 50.

Yes, the understanding is lacking. I'm guessing this person isn't much of a reader.

upinaballoon · 11/08/2025 16:50

I read and write 'can't'. When I say it it sounds like 'carnt'.
