To not understand why people write "carnt"?

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 01/04/2022 23:50

And why it's not understood that it's not a word as such but a contraction of "cannot"? I see it such a lot.

OP posts:
hugr · 02/04/2022 05:50

I am asking why that is

Because you are infinitely smarter, better and more learned than them, of course.

You've asked here to laugh at the idiots, don't backtrack now. If you wanted to know why they spell words a certain way you would have asked them.

HTH

PAFMO · 02/04/2022 06:02

If you can't understand why some people can't spell words correctly, OP, then it's really you that needs awareness raising activities, not them.

Itstheprinciple · 02/04/2022 06:18

Where, were, wear are all homophones and are taught as such in schools.

DropYourSword · 02/04/2022 06:19

Not sure why it's hard to understand some people struggle with things like spelling and they will write things phonetically.

sweetbellyhigh · 02/04/2022 06:22

A lot of people assume that the ability to spell is connected to intelligence but it's not, it's about working memory.

I have a near photographic memory so spelling is very easy for me. My son on the other hand has to see a word an average of 40 x before he can spell it. Yet in something like maths where spelling is not an issue, he is crazily ahead of his peers.

SpringHasSprungYay · 02/04/2022 06:23

@TheHateIsNotGood

I never seen it neither and I'm a proper grammar-like person too. Maybe a local thing that peoples write, ? I 'm am thinking.
Either.
SpringHasSprungYay · 02/04/2022 06:31

@lemmein

I see it all the time on my local FB (NE)

Also, 'discusting'

Local FB groups are terrible for spelling mistakes!

But also the very reason we are even aware of people's inability to spell correctly.

Yes it's annoying.
Yes some people have LDs
And yes I'd like to find it less annoying because it doesn't serve anyone.
Nevertheless, I do find annoying.
C'est la vie🤷🏻‍♀️

Fridafever · 02/04/2022 06:32

Do you really not understand?

AchillesPoirot · 02/04/2022 06:40

What’s hard to understand about it? Some people have dyslexia, some people didn’t do well at school for various reasons. Some people just struggle.

It’s not an indicator of intelligence.

I struggle with spelling. Worse than that, I made a word up yesterday because I couldn’t think of the right one. Thankfully the VP I was messaging knows me well enough to know I’m very good at my job and the dodgy spelling doesn’t matter.

Greyrootszerohoots · 02/04/2022 06:47

People can be much worse things than bad at spelling and grammar. I worked with Language learners for years and ultimately, if you get your point across (assuming this isn’t to do with eg issuing medicine or landing planes) your spelling and grammar isn’t that important.

It’s almost like an old colonial hang up that we have this idea the English language can’t be tainted, when in fact it’s constantly changing.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 02/04/2022 06:58

One of my friends writes “why” instead of while - never seen anyone else do that. Very odd!

youvegottenminuteslynn · 02/04/2022 06:59

@SpringHasSprungYay

Either

I don't think you got the joke!

winnieanddaisy · 02/04/2022 07:19

When I was 13 a girl moved into the area where I lived and we became quite friendly.
After a couple of months she moved over two hundred miles away to her original home town . A few weeks later I was surprised to receive a letter from her as I hadn't thought we had been that close . The letter was very difficult to read because it made no sense at first . Every line started with a capital letter and ended with a full stop . She hadn't grasped the need for punctuation at all .
I was so upset for her as until that point I thought that everyone had had the same standard of education that I'd had and the same ability to learn . She was the same age as me but miles apart in ability . I now try not to judge peoples spelling and grammar as not everyone can do things which the rest of us find easy .

Herejustforthisone · 02/04/2022 07:21

I think it’s due to not reading enough and so not seeing words and contractions written down.

Malalaa · 02/04/2022 07:21

@Ikeatears

This belongs in Pendants' Corner, in any other area of Mumsnet, it comes across as nasty, judgemental and completely lacking in awareness of learning disabilities and/or lack of educational opportunities.
This. What a nasty thread.
OnceuponaRainbow18 · 02/04/2022 07:29

Never seen it before and I teach in a secondary so read 100s of kids work all the time

Notmybloodymonkeys · 02/04/2022 07:49

@Notarealmum

I’ve never seen it spelt that way either, but can understand why people might as it’s just a phonetic spelling of can’t and not everyone understands the whole apostrophe business.
I used to work with someone who didn’t understand apostrophes so would write ca’nt, wo’nt, has’nt etc. He also used to randomly stick one in the name of a colleague so she became Bab’s whenever he had to write her name.
knittingaddict · 02/04/2022 07:56

The fact that you know one person who writes it like that says it all.

I've never seen it written like that, so it's hardly a common mistake. Lots of other examples out there of errors that are made all the time, most of them listed above.

Elsiebear90 · 02/04/2022 07:59

I see it all the time on Facebook, it’s because they can’t spell very well so write words down as they hear them. Im not pedantic about spelling or grammar at all and mine is far from perfect, but I do think it’s surprising when you first see it because it’s such a common and easy word to not know how to spell.

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 02/04/2022 08:04

I have seen people write "r" instead of "I'll". I absolutely cannot get my head around that one. Surely they know it's not even close to correct?

QuebecBagnet · 02/04/2022 08:10

@Orangutanteddy

Well, I don't understand why people write 'would of' instead of 'would have' but I guess we've all got our crosses to bear.
DD’s English teacher used to do this!
golddustwomen · 02/04/2022 08:15

I see it on social media all the time, also his instead of he is. His tired. He is fucking tired!

nopenotplaying · 02/04/2022 08:18

An ex colleague does this regularly on her Facebook it makes me cringe!

PurpleNebula84 · 02/04/2022 08:24

Whilst I understand some people have difficulty with spelling/have dyslexia, I've got to say "carnt" is one that I detest and see it so frequently (live in NW) on Facebook posts/comments. Another one that sets my teeth on edge is "discustin".

Christmas1988 · 02/04/2022 08:35

Stop making people with dyslexia and other such things feel inferior, you wouldn’t mock someone with a physical disability.
