How can people give their child a name which is spelt wrong???

Lily is the name of a flower - there is no alternative spelling, just one that says to the world, "my parents cannot spell".

One of my friends is Lissa which she claims is the Welsh way of spelling it. I'd love to know whether that's true or not.

pantoinghousewife · 18/12/2007 20:19

I knew a Lissa but, it was short for Melissa.

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 18/12/2007 20:20

It does drive her mad when people say Lissa instead of Lee-sa.

Is it Fee-ah or Tee-ah?

I really don't know and I have heard it pronounced as Tee .

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 18/12/2007 20:22

How do you pronounce it?

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 18/12/2007 20:22

People bung an extra E in DS's name

Pinkchampagne · 18/12/2007 20:24

lou33 · 18/12/2007 20:25

I would have just assumed it was an old-fashioned spelling - like Lillie Langtry.

It wouldn't bother me - and everything bothers me

I love Bronwen though and it would never occur to me to spell it with a Y but that's because I had a welsh costume doll when I was about 7 whose name was Bronwen (embroidered on her skirt). I loved her.

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 18/12/2007 20:29

Reminds me of a book I read years ago where a girl was called Thalia by her parents. So people mishearing it called her 'failure' .

BoysAreLikeReindeer · 18/12/2007 20:30

I have a Murray

Over time he has been Murry, Murrie, Marie (wtf), Murphy (fgs)

Didn't think I would have that many problems with it

WendyWeber · 18/12/2007 20:34

Have a look at this for a variety of alternative spellings

dara · 18/12/2007 20:34

There is a Kamron in my child's class.

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 18/12/2007 20:38

lilet is another more traditional spelling

is there a link to the names lists please

WendyWeber · 18/12/2007 20:40

Names list for 2007 can't be out yet, it hasn't finished.

constancereader · 18/12/2007 20:40

bookofchristmascarolsmum - that was "Autumn Term", wasn't it? I loved that book.

One of my colleagues taught a Tea (Tia).

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 18/12/2007 20:43

califrau beautiful name

TheIceQueen · 18/12/2007 20:47

I sponsored a child called Thea for a while.....her name was pronounced Tia.

Amazes me how people can spell DS2's name correctly (pronounced Tong-guy), but can't spell DS1's name - either full or shortened version - pronounced Taf, Ta-far-a or Taf-fee..., and they're not much better with DS3's - pronounced Ta-kun-da....

JoyeuxNoelBiggy · 18/12/2007 20:52

Lilet?

You could have 2 daughters and call them Lilly and Tammy. Maybe a son called Bodyform.

TheOriginalXENA · 18/12/2007 20:56

Arghhhhhhh my DD1 is called LILY. But when she was born DH bl**dy text all his family Lilly.... Despite being told for nearly 6 years MIL still spells it incorrectly. She made DD a skirt in the summer..... and embroidered LILLY on the pocket. Naughty I know but I drew Lily's attention to it when we were at home, she said 'I know Nana spelt my name wrong, but I love her so I didn't say anything'.... Shame on me hey! and yes Nana spells her name with one N not two arghhhhhhhh

elbarto · 18/12/2007 21:07

my dd is Lily. and so many people have written Lilly in cards. i personally think its just lazy to not get it right TBH.

what is even more annoying is that they will spell it wrong for ever. my name can be spelt two ways and the culprits are the same people who have spelt mine wrong for the last 29 years!!

she is LILY, god dammit!!

ninedragons · 18/12/2007 23:45

I was looking at the list of all the baby names registered in Scotland in 2005. "Phoebe" was quite high in the rankings. "Pheobe" was lower but still put in an appearance, and disturbingly "Feebee" turned up too.

AwayInAMunker · 19/12/2007 01:22

Pheobe's just used by people who are thick, surely?

Feebee, I can understand more. I don't like it much, but it's a phonetic way to spell Phoebe.

Pheobe's just dim.
