How can people give their child a name which is spelt wrong???

Lily is the name of a flower - there is no alternative spelling, just one that says to the world, "my parents cannot spell".

Just got a card from nursery from one of DS2's friends, written by the mother (obviously - although having said that one of his nursery cards was signed by the child - and DS2 probably could have done his if he could sit still for more than 30 seconds LOL).

"Dilen" ???????!!!!

UnquietDad · 19/12/2007 12:15

Our DD has a name which can be spelt probably three or four ways. It's a good, traditional, English name (introduced by a Frenchwoman) dating back to the 12th century, and the spelling we use is the oldest one (also appears in the title of a Jane Austen book). We always have to correct people who start to go for the newest version.

SquonkaClaus · 19/12/2007 12:19

when I was born, my mum wanted my name spelt in the traditional way. Unfortunately, she sent dad to the registry office.

So I do, in fact, have a name that is spelt wrong. Very wrong.

But I only use it as my middle name so it doesn't matter to me.

My first name can be spelt three or four ways as well.

When I was married, both my first name and my surname could be spelt with an E on the end. The number of times I have given my full name and been asked "is that with an E?" well.... one is, one isn't

squonka it's register office

love2sleep · 19/12/2007 12:28

My name is always misspelled. I have the less common of two possible spellings.

It used to really really annoy me. I used to curse my mother for being awkward and curse everyone else for being wrong.

Then I turned 18 and realised that I really didn't care. I still don't care. I guess I'm not a real pedant after all.

itsahardknocklife · 19/12/2007 12:40

My middle name is Thea and I pronounce it 'they-a'. Might be a foreign way though as my mum isn't English and it was her middle name also.

SquonkaClaus · 19/12/2007 12:49

it's the register office now, back in my dad's day, it was the registry office

or maybe I just got it wrong

WanderingHolly · 19/12/2007 13:02

How has no one yet mentioned

Shaun

And no apologies at all to mners with Shauns.

See, even as a plural it looks shit.

TheIceQueen · 19/12/2007 13:08

what's wrong with "Shaun"???

puccaupunderthemistletoe · 19/12/2007 13:08

Oi!!!

My dd is Lilly.

To be fair though, i wanted it Lily, but seeing as though i picked the name, dh chose the spelling.

My thoughts on it? who cares..each to their own, people spell my name wrong (Sarah).

because isn't Milly/Millie usually short for Millicent???

SnowMuchToBits · 19/12/2007 13:13

My ds is a Jonathan, but he gets loads of cards to Jonathon or Johnathan or even Johnathon! The worst was one year both MIL and BIL (dh's brother) sent ds a personalised book for his birthday - with the name spelled "Jonathon"! You would have thought his family would have been able to get it right....

JingEllBells · 19/12/2007 13:15

I taught a Phillipa (still can't get over how very wrong that looks). Interestingly she was not a great speller! (Though - just in case she or anyone who knows her is on here - she was a great student and a pleasure to teach! )

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 19/12/2007 13:18

My Grandma's middle name was Lille with that spelling. See novel spellings are not a recent thing! The reason she was named with that spelling was that she was born during the first world war and a lot of the local men were off fighting in northern France - near Lille.

WanderingHolly · 19/12/2007 13:18

Sean, it's Sean.

Anglicised spellings of forrin names just don't work sometimes. Why not go with John?

And I feel similarly about Shevaun and Shaymus.

You wouldn't name yer kid Pee-air, would you?

Apologies to the mners who have Peeairs. It must be awful for you.

I had no idea there were different spellings of Jonathan.

DebitheScot · 19/12/2007 13:20

Ooooh I do like this sort of thread.

I was thinking that maybe if I have another baby and it's a boy I'd call it Ruairdhi (pronounced Rory), partly because I think its a nice name, partly because it's very obviously Scottish (well gaelic) and partly just to see how people pronounced it and spelt it.

When I was pregnant last time and looking at the latest baby name lists (think it was the 2005 list) I found one that seemed to be spelt the most number of different names was Caitlin. When I added up the number of girls born with each spelling I realised that it was a lot more common than it first looked.

Came across a Dan-yell once.

mis-spelling of names is a bugbear of mine, but apaprently thats my fault for giving my ds1 a stupid name!!!!!

his name is keir not kier, kia, kya, kyra, kiera or any number of other variations on that theme.

i agree the name should be spelt correctly, and perhaps we should have a ban on silly made up names. such as the tay-lah mentioned by a pp.

i have a friend who is a year 1 teacher and she tells some stories of laughable spellings of 'normal' names.

puccaupunderthemistletoe · 19/12/2007 13:24

I may be lynched for this but my cousin and his GF have just called their baby - Danny, and they have registered him Danny, not Daniel.

I don't dislike the name Danny, but think a better option would have been to register Daniel and use Danny day to day (if that name floats their boat).

bossykate · 19/12/2007 13:28

boggles that uqd's daughter is called "mansfield"...

Keir is not stupid name, and is spelt correctly.

Charles and Giles sound the same if you are posh to the point of being adenoidal and inbred.

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 19/12/2007 13:30

debitthescot when i chose the name Caitlin I thought it was quite a straight forward name with one spelling. I was wrong. It is frequently spelt incorrectly by people I think should know.
