How can people give their child a name which is spelt wrong???

Lily is the name of a flower - there is no alternative spelling, just one that says to the world, "my parents cannot spell".

DV what exactly is a Maffew ? Some kind of flower?

walkinginawinterBundleland · 18/12/2007 18:14

yes Lilly is definitely "better" than Tiaamii

Tommy · 18/12/2007 18:14

Califrau

I'm so dull - gave all 3 of my DSs very ordinary names with "traditional spellings" as the registrar said with a smile when we told her DS1s name!

DarthVader · 18/12/2007 18:15

No, it is the "I can't spell very well" version of Matthew.

That's what dh said - perhaps they think it's short for Lillian....well it isn't - got that? [grrr - hmc in grumpy mode due to bad cold]

walkinginawinterBundleland · 18/12/2007 18:15

iota

walkinginawinterBundleland · 18/12/2007 18:16

Boogalooblue · 18/12/2007 18:16

my dh's name is spelt fillip, isn't that a proper name

DarthVader · 18/12/2007 18:18

Look, this is my first adventure into pedants corner...it's about pedantry

My great aunt who was born in the 1890s was called Lilly - nothing to do with parents who cannot spell. They were giving her a name which was popular at the time, not naming her after a flower.

handlemecarefully · 18/12/2007 18:23

That's Eastern European isn't it? (fillip)

The OP was talking about Lilly..and frankly that is spelt wrongly

handlemecarefully · 18/12/2007 18:42

Ok...(grudging admission follows) have looked it up in wilkepedia and you can seem to spell it both ways, but imo it is very wrong

DarthVader · 18/12/2007 18:47

I demand a controlled experiment.

The parents of girls named Lily must go head to head in a spelling competition with the parents of girls named Lilly.

I would have a good wager on the outcome.

As someone who has spent years spelling her name I would implore parents to give their children names that are spelt correctly. Someone at my son's school is called Tay-lah.

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 18/12/2007 20:03

Cali - I have a Bronwyn. I was happy with either spelling. DH decided he wanted the y and since he was dyslexic I went with whatever he found easiest

I am still stunned at the amount of people who repeat the name back to me (and other friends so it isn't just my annunciation) "Bromley"

unknownrebelbang · 18/12/2007 20:06

I know a baby named Lilly. Each to their own.

My name is Vikki, not Victoria, and this is how my parents spelt it 40+ years ago. Apparently it's naff

pantoinghousewife · 18/12/2007 20:07

Lilly is shortened form of lillian though isn't it. My dd has a name which is a spanish derivation of an english name and my dad always spells it the german way!

Actually I don't know any Lillys, I do know one Lily!

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 18/12/2007 20:11

Lol, you'd get on well with my aunt though - she ranted at my mum when we named DD She was much more approving of DS because it was Welsh and spelled correctly

FlamesparodyOfAChristmasName · 18/12/2007 20:12

My step niece is a Lily.

Actually, she isn't, she is a longer name but would be faaaaaaaaar too identifiable if I put that. Her shortened version is spelt right though

Beenherebefore · 18/12/2007 20:14

The parent can spell the name however the hell they like, can't they?

Maybe they want it to be spelt differently from the flower?

stripeymama · 18/12/2007 20:14

I read in the Guardian a few years back that 27 baby girls had been called Chardonnay that year - the article went on to say that "even more worryingly, 13 were named Chardonay".....

bookofchristmascarolsmum · 18/12/2007 20:16

Looking at my dd's birthday cards, it's incredible how many variants people have invented for her name. I spelt it the 'usual' way too .

I don't have a problem with Lilly being spelt with one or two Ls. Just be aware that getting named products will be hell on earth. Says she with a cousin named Allison.....
