How can people give their child a name which is spelt wrong???

Lily is the name of a flower - there is no alternative spelling, just one that says to the world, "my parents cannot spell".

another vote for lilly being a perfectly normal and correct way to spell the name, both my great grandmothers had the same name, one 'lily' one 'lilly' and my mum is 'lillian' in honour, so ha!

Tamum - in Scotland it's usually pronounced Ev -elinn, whereas in England I think the emphasis is on the first part so its Eve (asin Christmas) Lynn. Same with Yvonne. I always pronounce it E-vonn, yet where I work there is an Yvonne and she and others says Eev-on

my ds's name ends - an, and so many people spell it -en which drives me mad. Especially as dh take the p as he didn't want the name, but after 3 sons, I felt I'd earnt it. Now, with this experience, couple with the stories on this thread, it's really added an extra dimension to the name choosing for our next dc. Does it go with surname? Does it sound stupid? Are there any obvious taunts? Can even the dimwits spell it?

Tamum · 21/12/2007 08:14

Saltire, that's what I said, or meant to say- maybe I'm not writing the phonetics very well. I've never heard Yvonne pronounced as anything other than eeVON IYSWIM, in either country

ELF1981 · 21/12/2007 08:29

I had never heard of Eve-lyn before I named my dd Evelyn (pronounced with an R) when loads of people kept asking me on how to pronounce it as the person asking would know somebody both pronounced it one way and somebody who pronounced it the other way!

Not sure if it comes to a regional thing?

The people who struggle sometimes just give up and call her Evie

Its number 99 this year on the most popular names, which I am happy about

Does anyone give a f))k?

oxocube · 21/12/2007 12:49

Sorry, that was supposed to be does anyone really care whether someone choses to call their daughter Lily or Lilly or Lillie or any other variant. Its still a pretty name. Just seems churlish to moan about it. Or maybe I'm just having a bad day

Oxo, well this IS pedant's corner

Don't think you can give a 'wrong' name can you? What's on the birth certificate surely is the 'right' name (unless the registrar got it wrong)?

deckthehallswithgeekymummy · 24/12/2007 23:48

Ooh I am pedantic about my name!

My first name is not unusual but often mispronounced and misspelled. There's even a Facebook group decrying this, and there's a good few hundred members!

lou031205 · 24/01/2008 22:12

With regards to Millie, there is no 'y' in Millicent!

nappyaddict · 21/02/2008 16:32

milly comes from emily doesn't it?

PinkyDinkyDoo1234 · 12/08/2011 20:26

i know the single l is the correct spelling but it just looks wrong to me.

proudfoot · 24/08/2011 09:54

I prefer Lily but Lilly is also perfectly correct. It comes from Lillian.

I know of several children with names misspelled but don't want to name and shame here. I know that my dad's middle name which was meant to be Alan is on his birth certificate as Allan. One of my nephews also has a misspelled middle name. When we went to register DD I was paranoid that the registrar would spell her name wrongly (even though it is a straightforward name) but you have to check the thing before you sign it so how my nephew got the wrong spelling is beyond me.

On another note, when I was having DD, one lady on my ward wanted to call her DD after her mother. But she couldn't spell the name (Priscilla). I heard her talking to the ward sister and she (mum to be) said, "I think it's spelt [sic] P-E-R-C-I-E-L....." at which point I lost interest and all hope for the child!
