Hey!!! Oooh brand new and shiny thread!!!

clayre · 16/09/2008 13:13

hello i'm a bride to be newbie, dp and i have been together 9 and a half years and have been engaged for 9, we have decided that we would like to get married on the quiet, telling only my best friend and her husband!

I think its going to have to be a registry office wedding with a party a few weeks later for all our family friends, are we mad?

can anyone help me out with what legal stuff we need? we are going down to the reg office on monday when dp off, we are totally clueless!

thanks

beanieb · 16/09/2008 13:43

Hello!!

am getting married on 24th July 2009. been engaged just over a week.

Our plans are.

Drive ourselves to town or get the bus!

2pm register office wedding with close family and friends (about 20)

Meal with those close family and friends afterwards.

Evening party with buffett.

Am stressing myself out by letting other people give me ideas about themes and colours, this is something I never thought I would do as I have never wanted to get married. I think we've found a venue and we're meeting the owners/management in a couple of weeks just to see the place but have no idea how all this works etc.

stretchmarkqueen · 16/09/2008 14:41

Hi and welcome!! Haven't got time to post for long as i've got to do the school run!!

Don't let anyone tell you what to do re. wedding. We wanted to go to Gretna Green as my bf got married there and it was really romantic! But our parents and siblings started moaning that it would cost to much for them to stay in the hotel. Even though I had searched out some cheaper hotels nearby! So, we're getting marreid here.

Who said you need a colour theme for a wedding!! You're getting married, not decorating a room!!!
Ignore, ignore, ignore!!!!

If you can be bothered to read the other thread, then there are quite a few good suggestions, but have a cuppa ready, and lock the kids up first!! It's quite a read!!

Both your weddings sound fab!! We're having a register office, with a meal at our local restaurant after for just 24 people, then we're doing our own food for the evening party!! Food for 100!!

It's very easy to be sucked in by everyone else's view of how a wedding 'should' be, But they're not the ones who have to foot the bill! Focus on what you as a couple want, then go for it!!!

Your register office should tell you what to bring with you. Usually, birth certificate, utility bill, rent card, etc..

This first interview you have is to give notice of intention to marry. Then on the day of the wedding, you will have to do another interview just before you marry. Beware though, we've had problems with ours as we have to be interviewed together, and can't have our own music. But just ask.

hth!

stretchmarkqueen · 16/09/2008 14:42

Not a long post??!!

smurfgirl · 16/09/2008 14:44

I get married in 3.5 weeks!!!!!!!!!!

Having a big white wedding and am a bit bridezilla

beanieb I only had to chose a colour scheme because I am having bridesmaids - if you are not then it doesn't matter!

beanieb · 16/09/2008 14:45

Thank you we have our meeting with the registrar on 29th

We're considering soing the food ourselves. No bridesmaids so that's good

teafortwo · 16/09/2008 14:48

Hello all you lovely brides!!!!

Clayre,

We planned to get married then tell our relations after and invite them to a bbq to celebrate. A card saying "We got married" and an invite "Please come to our wedding bbq".

Because my Uncle didn't know about the wedding and planned bbq he booked to go on holiday on the day we had planned to have the bbq. We really wanted my uncle to be at the bbq so we decided to bring the bbq forward to be the day after the wedding.

So instead of telling them about the wedding after it had happened I sent letters telling all of my family that we were going to quietly get married but we wanted to celebrate with them too. So we invited them to the bbq in the letter.

If you want to see a copy of the letter - just say! They all said they liked it very much!!!

They were all very cool and said that is how they expected us to get married.

My DHs family are very laid back and informal in life and had no worries about if we are married or not so they were really - "Yeah - whatever makes you happy" about it!

My Mum feels a bit sore that she didn't see us get married (we got our parent's 'blessing' to have a quiet wedding before starting to organise it) but my sister announcing and organising a big white wedding has softened the blow a lot!

Look back through our old thread if you want to see how we organised the day. There is even a link to my wedding pictures somewhere!!!!

What are your plans so far? What will you wear? Who are you going to invite? Tell all!!!! Sounds exciting!!!!

saralou · 17/09/2008 00:17

hugh, the weather looked amazing!!!! and you looked fantastic too!!

didn't you have the same wrap as i have??? what problems did you have?????? (not panicking, not panicking, not panicking!!!)

clayre and beanib, we get married in 2 weeks, reg office and meal after with family and close friends - 30 people.. didn't think i'd get sucked in to the whole bride thing... but i have (and enjoyed it )

wedding is all planned now.. well i just have to sort out the music next week and pay for the meal! i'm off on pre wedding holiday on friday can't wait!

was working out my new signature the other day and dp worked out that the work squiggle i use - if you look at it a different way has all dp's initials... so i can keep my work squiggle (very important as i can sign my name about a 100 times a day at work!

i was freaked out all night by that!!!

MerlinsBeard · 17/09/2008 10:05

argh panic! I couldn't fit on teh other thread!!

Will go catch up now i have marked my place

SMQ: lol @ your short post further down the thread
We will also be catering ourselves. I am not looking forward to buttering sandwiches for 100 people!!

Saralou: 2 weeks!!!

Our ring lady came last night and we have essentially designed our own rings, they are the SAME which is exactly what i wanted. DP is a musician so wasn't sure he would even wear a ring and then he decided he wanted a matt silver one. that would look nice with my engagemnet ring NOT!
So in the end we designed our own that is perfect and will get them in 4-6 weeks
It's starting to feel really real now!

clayre · 17/09/2008 10:18

thank you for your story teafortwo, well we havent decided anything, i think i want a dress but nothing fancy, i'm not a centre of attention sort of person, my mum knows what we're thinking about doing and shes not bothered she said we should do what we want.

We are thinking early 2009 because dp doesnt have any days holiday left to take this year.

I wish someone will plan it for me and i just turn up!

teafortwo · 17/09/2008 10:23

OK - so remember I was asking you all advice on my sister's wedding????

Well I asked her what I could do to help and she said -

"Run a children's room"...

I have never been to a wedding with a children's room! Brides... any ideas... What should I have in said children's room???

All I can think is... nothing messy that will spoil their clothes and lots of choice as they are all different ages!

So far I thought decorating lucky horse shoes with non messy things (???), a movie corner, a duplo mat, babies corner....

But what else can I add?

Seriously...
HEEEEELLLLP PLLLEEEAAASSSSE!!!!!!

OP posts:
MerlinsBeard · 17/09/2008 10:24

oh dear, i hate the idea of childrens rooms and it means you will miss lots of the reception/wedding

Is it for the wedding or reception?

miamla · 17/09/2008 10:29

hi all, we got engaged 1 jan 08 but this year has been full of having a baby, moving house and DP getting a new job. so, we'd like to get married early next year (April ish) but that's as far as we've got! We don't want anything fussy but have no ideas what we do want
half of the guests are in wales and the other half are in London so we cant even decide on a location
can anyone help or am i asking too much??

DisasterAreaIsOffToCostaRica · 17/09/2008 10:30

tell me, bridezillas, would you prefer real flowers on your cake or painstakingly, time consuming, handmade sugar ones?
am making big cake for bridezilla mate.

MerlinsBeard · 17/09/2008 10:32

we are putting real flowers (or artificial haven;t decided yet) on our cake that are the same as the bouquet will be (again haven;t decided yet)
