Thread 54 - Summer 25 - Graduations after Uni Year 3

Oblomov25 · 20/06/2025 17:15

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.
Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp
Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Golly mummyinbeds I’m so sorry to hear that. Heatstroke as you know can be very dangerous. I’ve had it and DS has had it. Can you get him into an airconditioned hotel room for 12 hours (nearest nobotel for eg) and then continue your journey at night?

Seeline · 22/06/2025 11:05

Oh no @mummyinbeds ! Hope you all make it home safely at some point!

mummyinbeds · 22/06/2025 19:04

Thanks for all the kind support. We're currently waiting to board the Eurotunnel. DH is feeling a bit better now we've found cooler weather in Northern France. I'm ready for a long long sleep - just a 2.5 hour drive back in England. It's been a long few days and I will never moan about the uni run to Nottingham, or even Aberystywth, ever again.

mummyinbeds · 22/06/2025 19:06

By the way @ExtensivelyDecorating hope you enjoyed Aber 🙂

crazycrofter · 22/06/2025 19:14

Glad you're nearly back @mummyinbeds . What a nightmare in the boiling hot weather!

ExtensivelyDecorating · 22/06/2025 20:04

Thank you @mummyinbeds we did indeed, the weather was fabulous, I did swim in the sea after all (at New Quay not Aber itself, much more sheltered). So sorry about DH and the packing/travelling/heatstroke nightmare, glad you are on the home stretch now.

EwwSprouts · 22/06/2025 20:37

@mummyinbeds Hope you are back in the UK now and it's raining.

@Oblomov25 Good to know they are out and about.. The food looks lovely.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/06/2025 22:00

Hopefully you’re very close to home now @mummyinbeds Inreally hope you don’t have work in the morning! Get straight to bed when you get in, you deserve a good long sleep in a comfy bed!

NCTDN · 22/06/2025 22:36

@mummyinbeds hope you’re back home safely now.
I’m going out to see dd next week and get some things home and can’t wait! DS is coming and hasn’t had chance to visit her in Austria yet due to a levels so really looking forward to it.

mummyinbeds · 23/06/2025 00:37

We're home. The worst bit of the drive was the M25. The idiots were certainly out tonight. And yes @JustHereWithMyPopcorn I do have work in the morning.
@NCTDN I hope you have a great trip. Unfortunately due to the extreme heat, DS didn't get to show us around Toulouse like he'd hoped. He's loved his time there and loved everything about French life. I think the year abroad has been great for him. I'm guessing your DD's experience has been amazing too.

AnneOfCleavage · 23/06/2025 08:15

Wow another new thread - thank you @Oblomov25

So much to catch up on but I’ve loved having a good old read - was awake at 5am as so hot so thought I’d do some Mumsnetting 😃

Huge congratulations to @JustHereWithMyPopcornDS on his new job and that is fantastic news on the firm funding his SQE. DD’s boyfriend is in a firm (straight after a law Masters) training up too but has had to fund his exams himself and take unpaid leave to study and take them - results in Aug. He passed the SQE1’s but the SQE2’s were on another level (you have 3 tries to pass them so not for the faint hearted). He’s done a “seat” in conveyancing - did not enjoy that - and now on to Probate which he’s enjoying more.

Brilliant news on the Silver @Aslockton- not heard of that sport before so been exciting reading about your DS’s adventures. I am also very interested in that podcast you posted about. What a lovely thing to do for a YP. My aunt used to be a weekly “Friend” at the local hospital and visit long term patients who never had visitors.

Congrats to your DD on the 1st @socks1107

So glad you’re home safely now @mummyinbedsThose France temps sound insane and heat stroke is no joke esp being in a car for such a long journey. Your DS must be so grateful to have such lovely parents. Hope your workload isn’t too onerous today. The heatwave seems to have broken a little here so I’m hoping for a better night.

@Piggywaspushed Congrats to DS2 on finishing year 3 and all the best for his masters in Sept. Will he continue playing his - I want to say - euphonium in his new Uni and is there a band he can join? I do feel for your DS1. It’s so soul crushing getting rejection after rejection for post grad jobs and it must be hard even looking and applying when in full time employment too.
I hope you have a lovely summer after another busy year of teaching 😊

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2025 08:25

It is a euphonium, yes! One reason he is keen on Sheffield is because of its brass band scene! He plans to go to Unibrass and seize the trophy off Birmingham!

Teaching nearly done ... limping to the end!!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 23/06/2025 08:31

@mummyinbeds praying for an easy day for you today!

@AnneOfCleavage thank you, if your DD's boyfriend has any tips on the SQE that would be great! 😄

@Piggywaspushed DS2 was in Sheffield this weekend for an open day, he had wanted to go but I persuaded him to take a look, well he loved it! Its now firmly on his UCAS list.

Seeline · 23/06/2025 08:43

So glad you're home safe @mummyinbeds . I think the worst part of living in the SE is knowing that virtually every trip you do, no matter how bad, has to end with the M25!!

ExtensivelyDecorating · 23/06/2025 11:38

@mummyinbeds so glad you are back safely now. @Seeline we are about 30 miles from the M25 (Hampshire) and it is one reason we never seem to go anywhere in the eastern half of the UK, only been to East Anglia once, never go to Kent (except for the tunnel), Essex, Cambridge. We tend to go north via the M40/M6 instead and cross over further up if necessary.

@Aslockton I was interested in the independent visitor thing as well, I volunteer at a residential special school and they have them too (they are inspected as social care settings), I didn't realise it was for all children in care.

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2025 15:16

Am I allowed to share DS's results on here? Not sure how people feel?

ealingwestmum · 23/06/2025 16:19

YES Of COURSE :)))

ealingwestmum · 23/06/2025 16:26

I've been sat on Matricula de Honor for days @Piggywaspushed. No idea what the fuck it means other than I think it's good. Nothing counts for her final classification, all 100% graded on year 4. But really happy for her, maybe other than her grandmothers no one else will care around us other than, 'it's babyealing' shrug so we've shared nothing for years.

There, I have now shared with you all. I think I speak for most that we would be delighted for you to share and for us to celebrate whatever your DS has achieved, he's just completed his UG programme of study!

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2025 16:40

OK, so I don't know if everyone remembers but he swapped to history after 5 weeks and then had a bit of a meltdown in second year. But , I think you all also know that he is incredibly hard working and focused.

He got a first!

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2025 16:41

Matricula de wotsit sounds awfully good !

ealingwestmum · 23/06/2025 16:45

Fantastic @Piggywaspushed. it is still horrible to recall what entitled knob-heads he had to house share with, and the darkness that ensued so yes, it so SO lovely to hear his final result, very well deserved indeed.

Look forward to hearing how Sheffield treats him, I hope they're ready. Celebrate well :)

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2025 16:49

He's in Krakow with a friend at the mo. His friend only drinks water so it will be wild celebrations tonight!!

ealingwestmum · 23/06/2025 16:52

😂
