Thread 50 - Covid GCSE Cohort - New Year of Adulting

OrangeSpicedBun · 20/01/2024 10:48

2024 here we are... our young people are still getting used to adulting and we're still doing that adulting thing ...it's tough !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Lovely to hear of the happy teens & the very best of luck with the job applications.
@craggyrat don't do too much too soon, however tempting it is.
Dd2 has gone to Canada a day later than the others on her break to see Grandma. She's just had a wonderful few days falling in love with the Rome Architecture & the beautiful villas on her uni trip.
When dd1 & dh got to 94 year old grandma after 2 long flights to Vancouver Island they found her collapsed on the floor, delirious & wet. No idea how long she had been there.
She's now been admitted to hospital.
Though the first thing she said to them was the money's all locked up 😮 which made dd1 feel great !

Oblomov23 · 12/02/2024 11:34

oh dear @Cantonet, that's not good news. Why did she say that- does she think they've come to rob her of her worldly goods? Wink Mind you when people are in a medical state, they do say very odd things. I've had diabetic hypos where I've said very peculiar things.

Alwaysplayspicc · 12/02/2024 12:36

Thanks for asking, Shimy.
Lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy surgery scheduled for next week, but I've had a weird runny nose and mucus -y throat/chest for the last few days so I'm off to the GP later, in the hope of heading it off.

Feel like I'm a bag of anxiety lately. It's DS's 18th today, but I'm so worried about catching something, we're not really going out to celebrate.

Good to hear you're back on your feet and mobile. I'm sure it'll be a while before your back to match fitness, but we'll done for taking the first step.

Oblomov23 · 12/02/2024 13:08

Sorry to hear that Pic, @Alwaysplayspicc, completely reasonable to be careful not to catch anything though.

ealingwestmum · 12/02/2024 13:20

Aw, happy birthday to your DS Piccolo. Your family are having such a horrible period right now, really looking forward to you coming out the other end. Until then, one day at a time x

Shimy · 12/02/2024 13:24

Oh @Cantonet That's awful! to think it took your DD & DH travelling all the way for someone to find her..Thank God! The, 'Money is all locked up' is funny, maybe she was trying to reassure them that although she may be vulnerable...their inheritance is safe! Wink.

@Alwaysplayspicc Being anxious is quite understandable with impending surgery and then feeling unwell on top of it all. I hope your GP surgery isn't like mine. You have to dial on repeat at least 60 times before you get through to be told there are no more appointments. I hope you manage to get an appointment. Wishing your DS a happy 18th! can he go out to just celebrate with his mates or will that contact compromise you as well? I am sure at 18 he will understand how important it is to keep Mum healthy. Health is wealth, he can always celebrate with all of you on different date.
Wish you all the best.

ealingwestmum · 12/02/2024 14:20

Cantonet that is the 3rd similar tale of elderly woes I've heard in the past few weeks, maybe not with the theft concerns but nevertheless...Glad to hear your family got there in time.

All had a dehydrated, low blood pressure, somehow weirdly naked or wet, delirious (by that stage one in renal failure) but all thankfully found, albeit late and recovering.

It's led my mother to finally request a panic alarm necklace, but is somewhat challenging when I tell her she needs to keep it on in the shower. And to drink more even if you do need to pee 5 x per night

craggyrat · 12/02/2024 14:30

@Cantonet gosh that's awful. Hope she's doing okay now.

@Alwaysplayspicc - hope your DS has a good birthday. I got an absolute pig of a cold exactly a week before my surgery. I had been nask wearing and staying in as much as possible and hadn't had a cold in years. Just absolutely typical. I took those night and day cold and flu tablets and rubbed Vicks over my feet and slept like that in thick socks! Surgery went ahead as planned. I was so worried it would be cancelled but it was fine. Best of luck

EwwSprouts · 12/02/2024 20:12

@Cantonet I hope she is on the path to recovery.

@craggyrat Time to be the tortoise not the hare!

@Alwaysplayspicc Stay safe. Happy birthday to your DS.

Cantonet · 13/02/2024 09:52

Happy belated 18th to your ds @Piccolo.
I hope he managed to have a good one.

It's very understandable you're feeling anxious. You've got an awful lot going on in your life at the moment.

Thank you for all the good wishes regarding my mother in law. Apparently she got very agitated the other night in the hospital & they've sedated her.

She was living in assisted accommodation, but didn't want to press the alert button. Or that's the story! But the last time she tried when she fell several.months ago they didn't respond, as the system wasn't working & she ended up phoning her daughter in the middle of the night. She is Increasingly succumbing to dementia.
Poor DD having to deal with an upset and emotional dh.

I've reached the grand age of 60 here. Can't believe I'm so old !
And celebrated with a M&S Valentines Meal Deal last night ♥️ As only myself & ds2 are here. We're going to do a proper celebration in Mallorca in March & hopefully combine a London weekend with seeing Hamilton.

Shimy · 13/02/2024 10:45

Hi Cantonet do you mean you were 60yrs yesterday? if so, a very happy birthday to you OR that you've turned 60 during the course of this long running thread?

ealingwestmum · 13/02/2024 11:13

i think you’re saying you are 60 TODAY Cantonet? and if so, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! 🎈

Have a fantastic day, the meal deal sounds perfect with your son ;) Enjoy

ealingwestmum · 13/02/2024 11:18

The dementia is challenging isn’t it. I struggle with my mother’s bouts of aggression when I try to suggest something logical. She’s the type of 4’6” sari dressing 84 year old that is shit scared of falling, and yet won’t go anywhere without wearing socks and healed strappy shoes. Even her ‘house slippers’ have a heal on them. 😱

Seeline · 13/02/2024 11:22

Happy Birthday @Cantonet !

Cantonet · 13/02/2024 11:32

Similar here @ealingwestmum .
But in this case it's a Malaysian Chinese Grandma dressed in a sarong with dodgy feet ... & yes heels!
Yes, am 60 today, trying ... & failing to be thankful 😳😊

craggyrat · 13/02/2024 12:40

Very happy birthday @Cantonet !

cariadambyth · 13/02/2024 13:21

Very happy birthday to you @Cantonet .
@Alwaysplayspicc you have so much on your plate, no wonder you are anxious. I’m thinking of you.
my dm has just phoned to say dd has contacted her for her wedding photos. She’s both amused and horrified that she’s old enough to be history!! She’s delighted to be involved and able to help though.

crazycrofter · 13/02/2024 13:59

Happy birthday @Cantonet!

EwwSprouts · 13/02/2024 17:41

@Cantonet Happy Birthday 🎂🍾

Alwaysplayspicc · 13/02/2024 18:04

Happy special birthday, Cantonet!!
Hope you can celebrate in style, once DH and RD are home, and that your MiL gets the care she needs. X

Oblomov23 · 13/02/2024 20:40

Happy Birthday Cantonet!

Ds1 went to meet Dh and Ds2 in Birmingham for the Caravan show, but was so sick he had to leave. (He probably shouldn't have gone, but wanted to / didn't want to let Dh down I guess). Can't stand to think of him as ill, makes my maternal heart twang. (Both my boys are never ill and have only had about 3 days off school in their whole schooling). Ds2 says he'd never seen ds1 ill before, and was shocked. Never mind.

NCTDN · 13/02/2024 23:24

@Oblomov23 there's some big around at the moment that is truly awful. We've all had it including ds who is 17. The last time he had time off school was in Year 3.

Cantonet · 14/02/2024 11:06

@Oblomov23 your poor Ds.
He must have felt so sick trying not to let the others down.
I think it's definitely the time of year for nasty virus's running rampant.

Thank you for the very kind Birthday Wishes & I adore the Birthday Cake Jelly Bean 😆

Grandma is not recognising them. It doesn't help they have to gown & mask up. Though dh refused to for some reason & stood there like a lemon DD told me. The nurse woke her up as she's been sleeping all day so DD fed her water, oranges & biscuits. Dh said she fed her like she was a sick doggie ( well she is a vet 😀)
