Thread 50 - Covid GCSE Cohort - New Year of Adulting

OrangeSpicedBun · 20/01/2024 10:48

2024 here we are... our young people are still getting used to adulting and we're still doing that adulting thing ...it's tough !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Thank you kindly @OrangeSpicedBun.

Seeline · 20/01/2024 11:00

Thanks @OrangeSpicedBun
Best wishes to all those struggling at the moment. I dislike this time of year at the best of times....

craggyrat · 20/01/2024 11:01

@OrangeSpicedBun - thanks for the new thread

PhotoDad · 20/01/2024 11:40

Thanks, @OrangeSpicedBun!

EffortlessDistraction · 20/01/2024 11:50

Thanks @OrangeSpicedBun , wow, 50 threads, that's quite a milestone 🎉.

2024Newnames · 20/01/2024 12:14

Thank you @OrangeSpicedBun. (Minor name change here...)

Alwaysplayspicc · 20/01/2024 12:45

Thanks for the new thread (tiny name change here too, now I've realized how to), and for all the well wishes on the old one - very much appreciated.
More biopsies yesterday, as last week's lymph nodes were inconclusive. I am hoping the fact that the pornographer struggled to find the borderline one means it's of no concern.

Sorry that life has thrown so much at you, 2024Newnames. I hope your sister makes good progress, and that you can find some headspace to look after your own worries.

EffortlessDistraction · 20/01/2024 12:50

@Alwaysplayspicc I know it's not a laughing matter but are you sure you meant pornographer Grin.

@2024Newnames I'm always tweaking my name as well. I'm so sorry to hear about your sister.

craggyrat · 20/01/2024 12:56

@Alwaysplayspicc - the pornographet did nake me laugh! Struggling to find sounds promising so fingers crossed for that

Oblomov23 · 20/01/2024 14:55

Sorry Grin

PuddingtonPuddington · 20/01/2024 17:54

Thanks @OrangeSpicedBun for the new thread. Slight name change here too.

@Alwaysplayspicc pornographer 🤣 but sorry to hear your news.

DD has a new UCAS submitted so waiting on offers from ARU to transfer into year 2 and Surrey to restart in year 1 (but may be an issue with SFE as technically started year 2 and although paid no tuition fees SFE count it as a whole year of tuition however may be able to argue mitigating circumstances).

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 20/01/2024 18:09

Thank you @OrangeSpicedBun, let’s hope 2024 improves rapidly after a pretty rubbish start to the new year for so many.

Good luck to your DD with her applications @PuddingtonPuddington 🤞

AnneOfCleavage · 20/01/2024 19:57

Thank you @OrangeSpicedBun for another new thread - thread 50...Wow!!

@Alwaysplayspicc I did chuckle at pornographer but in seriousness I hope all the tests you're having go as well as can be expected and are not too uncomfy for you.

@craggyrat a holiday just for you and DH sounds amazing. How are things with you?

Good luck with the UCAS and transfer process @PuddingtonPuddington

So many name change tweaks 😄. I've been this name for so long but can't think of a tweak that wouldn't change it completely so I'll probably stick to it.

craggyrat · 20/01/2024 20:09

@AnneOfCleavage everything fine thanks. Probably healthier now than this time last year thanks to gym programme at local Cancer centre. Am hoping for a positive 2024! No more treatment fingers crossed except 4.5 more years of tablets

AnneOfCleavage · 20/01/2024 20:12

Yay @craggyrat. That is brilliant to hear 😀

Alwaysplayspicc · 20/01/2024 20:27

Aargh!!!!!! That'll teach me not to post without reading what autocorrect has come up with! 😂
(I'm not surprised a pornographer would struggle to find my lymph nodes...probably looking in the wrong part of my anatomy...😉😉)

EwwSprouts · 21/01/2024 08:45

@OrangeSpicedBun Thank you!

DS is home for one night only to play in a match and party. Going back today as has assignment deadlines this week. I asked if this year has a heavier workload but it's just front loaded. Next term he has 'nothing to do'. I live in hope he does some independent reading!

OublietteBravo · 21/01/2024 09:04

Thanks for the new thread.

We’ve just got the housing contract for DD through - their current landlord wanted to increase their rent massively, so they’re moving.

Meanwhile DS has done all his mocks, and is waiting for the results. It sounds like he’s leaning towards the UCAS offer from Newcastle.

Piggywaspushed · 21/01/2024 14:23

Just checking in. Been quite bad at posting just because there is nothing exciting to report.

DS has had two results back : a 64 from a compulsory module (he's happy he thinks she's an exacting marker) and a 72 form another compulsory module he enjoys more. History marking sure is subjective!

He is on to new modules and planning potential dissertations.

We thought he had accommodation sorted by booking uni accommodation. Turns out this is a random selection and he still doesn't know. So... back to square one, frustratingly.

cariadambyth · 21/01/2024 20:05

Thanks for the new thread.
Sorry to hear people’s difficulties but I’m glad they can be shared on here. Thinking of you.
DD is finding the History marking subjective too! She is happy to have signed for the same house next year with the same people so that’s one less thing to worry about.

crazycrofter · 22/01/2024 09:38

Thanks for the new thread! Dd totally burned herself out last week doing her first four exams, surviving on barely any sleep and too many energy drinks 😬 She came home for the weekend as it’s warmer here and she hoped to catch up on her sleep and revise better for the last two exams. She slept for about 12 hours Friday night and then had a migraine all Saturday 😩 So she’s not managed to prepare properly for today’s exam. She’s really regretting choosing a course which is mainly assessed by exams. To be fair, I don’t know if all Psych courses are the same, as they have to be accredited by BPS.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 22/01/2024 10:11

Morning all, hope everyone (and their houses!) survived the storm last night.

Good luck to your DD today @crazycrofter , sounds like a heavy week. DS has a 24 hour exam today on employment law, I do hope it doesn't take him 19 hours+ like his summer contract law one - good luck to your DS too @mummyinbeds .

@Piggywaspushed and @cariadambyth I think subjects like Eng Lit and History are definitely subjective but I have come to also think that Law is very subjective too and I'm certain @mummyinbeds would agree!

crazycrofter · 22/01/2024 11:06

All the best to @mummyinbeds ds and @JustHereWithMyPopcorn ds for the law exams! Well done to mini @Piggywaspushed .

Ds has his mocks this week and he couldn't be less bothered. His driving test is a different matter - he told me that it's imperative he passes this time and maybe, because he really wants to pass, he just will. I did suggest that not many people go into a driving test not wanting to pass! He's a good driver when concentrating, but as soon as he sees someone he knows walking past, or gets too involved in a conversation, he starts veering!😫

craggyrat · 22/01/2024 11:19

Good luck to all the exam people today! DS doesn't have his until after Easter. Has started new module now and seems happy enough with it. I think he will stay in college over Easter holidays as has library access there so we will have a long weekend in C to see him instead

Cantonet · 22/01/2024 11:46

Dd2 is 4/5 through her January deadlines for Architecture she tells me. I don't think she has any exams the first year. Their group project looked fantastic & they received brilliant feedback apparently. A few did most of the work & some were totally unreliable at getting up & getting to the workshops on time. She's thoroughly enjoyed it, but simultaneously has found it incredibly stressful.
Best of luck for all the exam takers/ driving tests this week 🤞
@Piccolo I hope you've been able to find a way to rest & relax this weekend.
