Thread 49 - Covid GCSE Cohort - The nights are drawing in...

Autumn 🍂 well and truly underway, has been chilly this week !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Really hope you get an objective and fair meeting Oblomov

EerilyDecorated · 27/11/2023 21:12

The time-blindness thing, none of mine are ever actually late and they do get up on time (just) but they cut it fine and it stresses me out. The not anticipating thing is a huge blindspot for DH, he is forever doing what I consider to be foolish things because he never seems to think that there could be a negative outcome (so leaves things perched precariously because it never occurs to him that a stray elbow could send them flying, never thinks to do any car or house maintenance till something actually breaks or falls apart, doesn’t file receipts or anything for that matter as he can never imagine needing them again). A couple of years ago I found he had sat a full glass of wine on my closed laptop on the kitchen table and couldn’t see why I was annoyed, he said he wasn’t going to knock it over so it was fine, I know that no one ever thinks they are going to knock things over but it happens, or cats jump up etc.

Seeline · 27/11/2023 21:13

@Oblomov23 mine have still got 3 weeks to go!

Hope your meeting goes well

EerilyDecorated · 27/11/2023 21:51

Also never getting around to booking/renewing things till the last minute and then being shocked that they are unavailable/expensive.

EerilyDecorated · 27/11/2023 21:58

Sorry, this is a sore point and I am derailing the thread. Hope things go well tomorrow @Oblomov23

286NeuerNahhhhhhhhmen · 27/11/2023 22:06

3 weeks left here too.

mummyinbeds · 27/11/2023 22:52

Three weeks left for both of mine. DD has a train booked for the 19th (to avoid the crowds leaving over the weekend) DS hasn't thought that far ahead but I'll go and collect him. It will be nice to bring him home without having to clear out his whole room like last year, although I can can guarantee we'll leave something important in Nottingham.

mummyinbeds · 27/11/2023 22:54

@EerilyDecorated everything you mention is another tick on my ever expanding checklist. Please keep going 😁

EwwSprouts · 27/11/2023 22:54

Not to worry @EerilyDecorated. We're here for the ups and downs.

@Oblomov23 Hope your CEO proves to have a backbone.

@ealingwestmum That must have been very intimidating for your DD. Hopefully a one-off.

EerilyDecorated · 28/11/2023 00:08

Thanks, it's good to vent sometimes. Three weeks to go here too but DS has got an exam on the last day of term which is a bit of a downer. He was home this weekend and did nothing but chill, didn't leave the house once, I think he really needed the break.

ealingwestmum · 28/11/2023 07:33

Thank you, hopefully Eww. And Crazy, JustHere, Piggy.

286NeuerNahhhhhhhhmen · 28/11/2023 07:52

@ealingwestmum that must have been horrible for your DD. Scary situation.
@EerilyDecorated no problem at all, we were all getting stuff off our chests. So annoying that your DS has an exam on the last day. I wonder if that is better than immediately on going back though unless he has both.

We are picking up on the Monday 18th as we can’t do the weekend. DH is going to see him next week for an evening too.

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 28/11/2023 08:06

@Oblomov23 good luck speaking with your CEO today.

crazycrofter · 28/11/2023 08:35

Good luck with the CEO @Oblomov23 . I’m not sure how dd would know who she’s been referred to - she’s just on a general list I think. I’ve heard people say they had a private appointment for things like knee ops and have then been fast tracked in the NHS but I’m not sure it would work with psychiatrists?

craggyrat · 28/11/2023 08:45

Good luck today @Oblomov23

Sorry to hear about the difficulties being experienced. That must be really tough.

@ealingwestmum - how very frightening for your DD. Such a shocking thing to happen. Hope she's doing okay.

Term finishes Friday for DS and we collect Sunday. One upside of the expensive room is we won't have to empty it. I'm not sure how long he will be home. I think he will want to be back in C by New Year as sports and libraries are all there.

@EerilyDecorated - that's rotten exam timing for your DS!

You can ask your GP to refer you to a private psychiatrist paid for by the NHS under Right To Choose, the most common private provider is Psychiatry UK. This is only for over 18s though, so as soon as my DD turns 18 (in a couple of months) that's what we plan to do.

Yes, bad timing for DS with the exam, he also has assignments due in on 21 Dec and 4 Jan. So we are planning a quiet Christmas. On the plus side I don't work on Fridays so I can pick him up the moment he's ready on the 15th.

Opportunity for an A'Level Gap year student!!!

I know there are some of you with A'Level students on this thread and some might be planning a gap yr. I just stumbled across this opportunity which i think looks great as you don't tend to come across work placements designed specifically for this group. Here it is: Data Cleaning Gap Year Placement - AlphaSights - London | Prospects.ac.uk

Cantonet · 28/11/2023 16:58

Well I delivered ds for his test today. Driving to the test the instructors car had a flat tyre & a face saver one was installed in a panic. But apparently they're not allowed in tests 😭
We can't book a new one online as they're saying we have to phone them first. But they're closed & the tests we were trying to book have all gone now.
😖😖

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 28/11/2023 17:09

Oh no @Cantonet what a nightmare!! 😞

ealingwestmum · 28/11/2023 17:27

Oh that's such bad luck Cantonet. Your poor DS.

286NeuerNahhhhhhhhmen · 28/11/2023 17:43

Oh no @Cantonet so frustrating.

PhotoDad · 28/11/2023 17:50

Oh no, @Cantonet, that's rubbish!

Shimy · 28/11/2023 18:47

@Cantonet How random is that? Shock your poor DS!

EwwSprouts · 28/11/2023 20:57

@Cantonet Maybe they want you to call so they can try and squish you in? DS's test was cancelled by the centre on the day on Monday. They gave him a rearranged one for the Thursday. Fingers crossed!

Seeline · 28/11/2023 21:53

My instructor's car had a flat when I took my second test! I'd woken up to snow and was fairly sure it would be cancelled, so was quite surprised to actually arrive at the test centre. The examiner said if we could change the wheel in 10 minutes he'd go ahead. So there was my instructor rolling around in the snow trying to change wheels. It was such a bizarre morning, I didn't really notice taking my test and was really surprised when I passed!
Hope you manage to sort something soon @Cantonet
