Thread 49 - Covid GCSE Cohort - The nights are drawing in...

Autumn 🍂 well and truly underway, has been chilly this week !

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

Well done to your DD @BlueMarigold

@Alsoplayspiccolo sorry to hear your news. Sounds pretty similar to what mine was except I'm on Anastrozole rather than Tamoxifen. Look after yourself today x

BlueMarigold · 19/01/2024 08:51

@Alsoplayspiccolo I am sorry to see your news but glad the prognosis is good and that you will be ok. Sending lots of love and prayers that you have the best care possible x

Monkey2001 · 19/01/2024 11:12

@Alsoplayspiccolo you are dealing with the news so well. Hope you are really feeling as positive as you sound. You've got this!💪

NCTDN · 19/01/2024 12:22

Not been on here for ages. Sorry to hear of medical issues but I'm impressed with the positivity Flowers

JustHereWithMyPumpkin · 19/01/2024 15:14

@Alsoplayspiccolo I’m so sorry to hear your news but very glad they think it is treatable. You also have my sympathy for the loss of the HRT!

@BlueMarigold congratulations to your DD! 🚗

AnneOfCleavage · 19/01/2024 15:48

Gosh! This January is full on isn't it. I'm so relieved to hear they've caught it quickly @Alsoplayspiccolo but a bummer re the HRT stoppage. Do your DC know the news yet?
I'm impressed the Drs are on the case with scans etc so quickly and also with your DH @EerilyDecorated.
Both of your positivity is amazing and I'm sending healing thoughts and positive wishes your way and do keep us updated on your treatment journey. I so love this supportive group.

@BlueMarigold Congratulations on the driving test pass - seems to be the theme this term.

EwwSprouts · 19/01/2024 18:56

@Alsoplayspiccolo Pleased to hear they are positive about treatment. Still a lot to take in though.

@BlueMarigold Good to hear of another success.

286NeuerNahhhhhhhhmen · 19/01/2024 20:22

Congrats on the driving test to mini @BlueMarigold !

@EerilyDecorated and @Alsoplayspiccolo , sorry to hear your news but glad that is both cases it seems to be manageable with a good prognosis. Thinking of you both.

This week has been tricky with DS on a low, he’s home for revision week. He has his DSA approved but needs to have the study needs assessment done, hopefully next week.

At the risk of being very outing, my DSis in her early 50s had a major stroke in the last week and is very unwell. She is thankfully not cognitively impaired but is paralysed down one side along with associated complications with swallowing, continence etc. It has been so shocking to see. It will be a very long road to recovery, she will hopefully be going to a specialised rehabilitation centre in a few weeks time is. Money is very tight for her family and my dad and i have been trying to work out how to help which is complicated
for many reasons. Unfortunately she is in hospital over 2 hours away from me (thankfully much nearer to her family) and each time I have visited has taken me over 5 hours in the car so it’s a full day especially as I see my parents on the way back. Very tricky with DS to support and a business to run. Yet I feel guilty I can’t go more often.

Oh and I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic which is a minefield of research in itself. And the dishwasher is broken to add to it all!

handmademitlove · 19/01/2024 20:34

@286NeuerNahhhhhhhhmen I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a few years ago. Feel free to message if you want some help navigating the minefield!
Sorry to hear about the difficult times with everything else. Sometimes life throws everything at you at once...

craggyrat · 20/01/2024 08:49

@286NeuerNahhhhhhhhmen am very sorry to hear about your DSis. That sounds very frightening. My SIL had very similar a few years ago at a similar age. She has made a full recovery but it took time. I hope your DS feels happier with a week at home even though it is for revision.!

DS was back rowing on the river yesterday at 7am - first one since the floods. He said temperature was -5. I'm not sure he enjoyed it much!

DH and I booked our first holiday with just us in 20 years yesterday. We are going back to where we went with DS post A level for a fortnight in early May - Playa Blanca in Lanzarote. Same hotel. We just wanted a relax after a tough year and we loved the hotel. I will really miss having DS with us though! Hopefully we will get to holiday with him in September fingers crossed. Was worried what my insurance would be like but it is £100 on top of what comes with our bank account so could be worse...

286NeuerNahhhhhhhhmen · 20/01/2024 09:43

Thanks @craggyrat , sorry to hear about your SIL but great she made a full recovery. How long did it take in all to be fairly ‘normal’? It’s great to hear of a positive outcome in similar circumstances.

so glad you have booked a holiday. We did our first ‘proper’ holiday without the boys last year, it was lovely not to have to think about more people. We then did another holiday with them and their girlfriends though as we felt guilty!!

thanks @handmademitlove appreciate the offer. There is so much info out there, some of it contradictory that it is confusing. It’s on the back burner for a week or two as my brain is very full! I know it can’t stay there though. A colleagues DH is a diabetes dietitian so am going to ask him for to recommend a book for beginners to start getting my head around it.

craggyrat · 20/01/2024 10:07

@286NeuerNahhhhhhhhmen I would say a couple of years - she didn't go back to work afterwards but if you met her in the street you would have no idea. She was touch and go with survival- very poorly indeed.

PhotoDad · 20/01/2024 10:30

Catching up a bit with the thread; best of luck to all those with problems at the moment. What a January.

OrangeSpicedBun · 20/01/2024 10:43

I'm so sorry to read your update @Alsoplayspiccolo 😔 💐
