Thread 48- Covid GCSE Cohort - Summer before Year 2 Uni

Oblomov23 · 25/08/2023 20:39

Summer ending. Year 2 for many at Uni about to start.

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results ( or life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, uni vs employment please don't within this thread.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue. We were previously on the secondary board and then further education, now we shall be here in 'Parents of Adult Children' gulp

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed). Experience is that everyone is welcomed wherever, whatever their child is doing we have some in work, gap years , apprenticeships etc too. Lots of contributors with different experiences and always sympathy and advice to be had.

I'm not keen on starting threads. @OrangeCinnamonLatte is so good at it. But we were at the end of old thread.

Thanks, @Oblomov23!

Cantonet · 25/08/2023 21:01

Thank you @Oblomov23 .

OublietteBravo · 25/08/2023 21:09

Thank you! How can they be starting second year already? Time is flying.

DD has finished her internship. She loved it! She’s already considering what summer placements she might apply for next year. She has her final bar work shifts this weekend, and then we’re all off on holiday on Monday. A week in the Canaries. Apparently they’re not too old for family holidays yet despite being 17 and 19!

EwwSprouts · 25/08/2023 21:31

Thanks for the new thread.

@Cantonet So sorry to hear about your beloved dog. They are totally family.

@Oblomov23 Hopefully we can keep your spirits up a little as you face such a long wait. For a broken back that seems particularly horrendous.

@piggywaspushed Shame about the one error. Hopefully he can get a cancellation as he is so close.

Seeline · 25/08/2023 21:35

Thanks @Oblomov23

Thanks oblomov!

KingscoteStaff · 25/08/2023 22:42

Good thread work!

We are off to Newcastle tomorrow morning to move DD into her new house - so exciting!

Shimy · 25/08/2023 22:42

Thanks for the new thread @Oblomov23 .

Shimy · 25/08/2023 22:42

enjoy your holiday @KingscoteStaff .

Shimy · 25/08/2023 22:52

@Cantonet I think I may have made a huge & awful mistake about your dog. I didn't read back all the pages and hastily read through and assumed your dog had died? but just read your last post about your dog eating steakBlush....unless you've got more than one dog of course. If I was wrong, please, please forgive me. This is what happens to people who don't read the full thread and jump to stupid conclusions.

Zebracat · 25/08/2023 22:52

Thank you @Oblomov23

EversoDetermined · 25/08/2023 22:53

Thanks for the new thread @Oblomov23 and sorry you are still suffering so much with your back.

@OublietteBravo we are coming towards the end of a 10 day holiday with the 19 and 17yos, the dynamics felt a little odd earlier in the week as they are more independent than they were last year but we have had a good time so far (we are on a combined city break and cruise, DS loves the city break and port days on the cruise, DD loves the cruise ship life, DH and I like both, I have probably put on about a stone in weight though).

@Piggywaspushed sorry about the driving test, 20mph zones are popping up all over the place here and its so easy to not notice.

285NeuerNamen · 25/08/2023 22:54

Thanks @Oblomov23

stoneysongs · 25/08/2023 23:41

Thanks @Oblomov23

sazzy5 · 26/08/2023 05:23

Thanks @Oblomov23
@Piggywaspushed my DS2 just failed his test yesterday, he’s a good driver but he had someone reverse and do a 3 point turn in front of him. He stopped but thought they’d finished so moved on too early. We’ve now got a test on the Isle of Wight in January which is ages and not convenient. So not getting better in terms of tests. Good luck to you sorting yours out.

icanbewhatiwant · 26/08/2023 06:11

Thanks for the new thread. I've been awake since 4am. So I have come downstairs to read. I also thought I'd catch up with this thread. Sorry to hear from those with bad news, failed tests, poorly dog etc.

I've been awake worrying about Ds who is heading to Brighton this morn. A mate is driving 5 of them in his old, little car, I can't help worrying about them doing the journey. I asked the lad to drive carefully and told him that with a car full, the car will be slow but will also take longer to brake. He said "oh, good point, but the car has 💩 brakes anyway" so that made me feel better! I was trying to not think about it. Dh's dd was able to pick up the keys for Ds as the agents are closed at the weekend. So it will be the first time going in the property. The 4 lads are all going to sleep on the floor. The other students haven't moved in yet, but have dropped stuff off. Then they'll drive home Monday as 3 of them work with Ds so have work Tuesday.

craggyrat · 26/08/2023 06:25

Thanks for the new thread. Am Feeling v battered sore and bruised but v happy surgery is done. Just got the wait for results...

285NeuerNamen · 26/08/2023 08:51

Glad the surgery is done at least @craggyrat. Take care of yourself and rest lots Flowers

Cantonet · 26/08/2023 09:57

Don't worry @Shimy.
Doggie is very sick still & not long for this world. But it's actually really lovely to have him at home. And the anti-sickness injection the hospital gave him means he's still eating & drinking. The rest of the time he's being cuddled & he's happy to be home.

Takeittotheboss · 26/08/2023 10:42

Best wishes to all invalids from another one.(just had my appendix removed after fairly dramatic a &e visit)

Not sure when youngsters stop wanting to come/stop enjoying family hols. Our two(19 & 24) flew out together to join us, which seemed weirdly adult, but then reverted to teenagers again😂
